Thursday morning feel good stories.
From OCEANSIDE, CA
An Oceanside homeowner got a shock at work when his phone alerted him to intruders inside his tented condo.
James says around 5 in the morning in late September, his heart dropped when the security alert showed him a real-time image: an intruder, wearing a headlamp in his 11-year-old daughter’s bedroom.
“Seeing a stranger in my house, especially my daughter’s room, is very nerve wracking,” said James.
His daughter wasn’t home. No one was. His condo, along with the entire Pamilla Del Oro community was wrapped in a fumigation tent. That day was the last of a three-day fumigation.
As it turns out, the burglars had sliced the tent and removed a screen before making an appearance on James’ phone. He called 9-1-1. Police showed up soon after.
“They set up a perimeter and called the guys out. One came crawling out,” said James.
James showed 10News a photo of that man handcuffed. Two other intruders captured on by the cameras got away. None of them wore masks. They didn’t take much from the home, only a few fishing knives.
“We took our valuables out before the fumigation,” said James. Police arrested James Brown, 47, on residential burglary charges.
From PINEVILLE, NC
Authorities believe a deadly shooting Tuesday in Pineville was in self-defense.
A fight led to the shooting near Willow Run Road at the Willow Ridge Apartments off Park Road.
“I heard shot and I was nervous too because we can’t believe that happened,” resident Samantha Ciebadrel said.
Donald Lee Blakney, 29, was shot and killed during a break-in at an apartment, officers said.
The occupant woke up went outside and confronted the suspect when they got into a scuffle and the occupant shot and killed Blakney.
“I was walking into the living room from the bedroom, and I heard a muffled noise that I thought could have been a shot,” resident Dewain Cherry said.
Cherry heard more shots fired.
“There were two more shots that were extremely loud and scared me and I dialed 911,” Cherry said.
Police said it appears to be a case of self-defense, even though Blakney was not armed. A firearms expert said that is state law.
“If you’re attacked by someone, say he’s breaking in your house and he comes at you and attacks you, you’ve got a right to use deadly force right then,” said Larry Hyatt, with Hyatt Guns.
From WORCESTER, MA
A city man who was shot by a store clerk during an attempted robbery in May at a Vernon Street grocery store was ordered held without bail Wednesday pending a dangerousness hearing next week.
Police and prosecutors said a masked man, later identified as Juan L. Ahorrio, entered No Name Grocery II at 49 Vernon St. on the night of May 26 carrying a large black knife. Mr. Ahorrio allegedly went behind one of two customers in the store, put the knife to her neck and demanded that the clerk, identified in court records as Byron Lara, give him all the money from the register.
Mr. Lara, who was licensed to carry a firearm, then pulled out his handgun, according to investigators. When the customer fainted and fell to the floor, Mr. Ahorrio allegedly lunged at Mr. Lara with the knife.
The clerk fired three rounds at Mr. Ahorrio, police said. Mr. Ahorrio dropped the knife and ran out of the store, according to authorities. Mr. Lara chased after him, ordered him to the ground and returned to the store to check on the customers, police said.
When officers arrived minutes later, paramedics from Worcester EMS were treating Mr. Ahorrio for three gunshot wounds, investigators said. The paramedics said they had been driving by when they saw Mr. Ahorrio on the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities.
The female customer had some minor scratches to her neck from the blade of the knife, but did not require medical attention, according to court records.
Initially charged in Central District Court, Mr. Ahorrio was indicted Aug. 23 by a Worcester County grand jury on charges of armed assault with intent to rob, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon. The indictments moved Mr. Ahorrio’s case to Worcester Superior Court, where he was arraigned anew Wednesday and entered not-guilty pleas.
Assistant District Attorney Lisa Casella filed a motion for a dangerousness hearing for Mr. Ahorrio and Judge Janet Kenton-Walker scheduled the hearing for Tuesday at the request of the prosecutor and Mr. Ahorrio’s lawyer, John J. Roemer. Ms. Casella is expected to argue Tuesday that Mr. Ahorrio poses a danger to the public and should be held without bail for up to 120 days while awaiting trial.
Mr. Ahorrio is also facing a violation of his probation from a 2011 Worcester Superior Court case in which he pleaded guilty to armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery and was sentenced to 3 to 5 years in state prison with 5 years of probation to follow. The alleged violation, which is also scheduled to be heard Tuesday, is based in part on the pending charges, according to court records.

Used to be just a drug town.
Now it is a third world shithole.
Worcester does have A positive attribute, there are roads out.
RTE 84 south to Hartford CT
RTE 90 east to Boston or west to New York State.
North will take you to Devens.
Land locked shithole floating in a sewage treatment pond.
ALCON: DO NOT stop, halt, exit, or otherwise find yourself delayed in Hartford, CT.
The area is a declared NO-GO zone, contact is likely.
Unless you’re looking for PCP, then have at it.
Hartford was a great American city back in the fifties, sixties.
Large insurance companies paid the taxes and the place had nice middle class homes and jobs.
It was “on the way” to points south with rtes 84 and 91.
Now people take the Mass Pike west to Albany and head south from there thus avoiding the state altogether.
October 19, 1924:
“On this day in 1924, the largest gathering of the Ku Klux Klan ever held in New England took place at the Agricultural Fairgrounds in Worcester. Klansmen in sheets and hoods, new Knights awaiting a mass induction ceremony, and supporters swelled the crowd to 15,000. The KKK had hired more than 400 “husky guards,” but when the rally ended around midnight, a riot broke out. Klansmen’s cars were stoned, burned, and windows smashed. KKK members were pulled from their cars and beaten. Klansmen called for police protection, but the situation raged out of control for most of the night. The violence after the “Klanvocation” had the desired effect. Membership fell off, and no further public Klan meetings were held in Worcester.”

They could not print enough money to make me want to live in that Yankee Shithole!
Lawrence is giving them a run for their money.
La Conia NH is a suburb of Lawrence.
The Worcester case is illustrative of a systemic problem. The crim was on probation for crimes of violence, including robbery, when he was indicted for robbery and other violent crimes in Auugust. While awaiting both a hearing for violation of probation and trial on the new robbery charges, he committed the robbery during which he ended up shot. It is more than a tad ironic that this career crim has a hearing set to determine whether he is dangerous and should be held for up to 120 days. Um. Ah. Bueller, wanna take that question?
The following does not do justice to this passenger, who felt her stupid little squirrel should be allowed to fly with her. She had a letter from someone with initials after their name which said it was an ’emotional support’ animal and should be allowed to fly with her. She said in a video that she would own a large portion of the airline, that she was getting a lawer. I don’t wish her well. There has to be a cap on this. Rodents should not be allowed to fly as comfort animals. If she needs something for her nerves, she should take valium. She has a fatso face that begs to be punched.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Frontier Airlines said a woman had to be escorted off a flight bound for Cleveland Tuesday night due to a squirrel.
Frontier said a passenger boarded Flight 1612 in Orlando, saying the squirrel was an emotional support animal. The airline said the passenger noted in her reservation that she was bringing an emotional support animal, but it was not indicated the animal was a squirrel.
Frontier said “rodents, including squirrels are not allowed” on its flights.
The passenger was advised of the policy and asked to get off the plane.
The airline said when she refused, Orlando police were called and requested everyone be deplaned so they could deal with the passenger.
Police eventually escorted her off the plane and took her to the main terminal.
The flight was rescheduled to depart for Cleveland later Tuesday evening.
I have many pictures of squirrels. None of them, to my knowledge, are on airplanes.
So nothing like this?
https://youtu.be/LpzKXOIwTmo?t=194
If your so loco en la cabeza that you need an “emotional support” squirrel, the last thing society needs is having you in a commercial airliner.
They need support animals to help them deal with their anxiety while flying?
They can’t just get hammered like everyone else?
No shit, there I was. Sitting in the airplane, just hitting cruising altitude. We had been deplaned due to a mechanical issue and delayed even further by other bullshit and were theee hours behind schedule.
Ding!
Captain: “Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the delay. While I don’t have the authority to issue refunds, as the captain of this aircraft I do have authority over the bar. Drinks are on me, feel free to enjoy yourselves.”
Needless to say, Grunt and his traveling companion about fell out of the plane into the jetway upon arrival 😀
I remember being stuck in SeaTac for over 24 hrs in 1975 when United was o9n strike and I had to sit and go standby after coming from Ft Wainwright to Cedar Rapids IA on Christmas leave.
I remember getting off the plane in SeaTac and headed straight to the bar.
Th8e customers in the bar heard my sob story and felt sorry for me,…
I boarded a NW Orient plane bound for Minneapolis on First Class and the good Captain told the stewardess to keep me well lubed as he was a Vietnam Vet and had been discharged about a year earlier.
I still have no idea how I boarded another plane in Minneapolis and got to Cedar Rapids on Ozark Airlines…
Good times back then my friend, good times !!!
The perps that broke into the house being fumigated…….obviously not the sharpest knives in the drawer.
Depends on when they break in. I used to work in the Pest Control Business. The Actual Fumigation is only about 24-48 hours.
Day three is when they air the place out.
BUT… the tarps are down by then.
The Standard Fumigant used is VIKANE.
Its colorless and odorless and the way it operates is that it displaces the oxygen. If you are in an enclosed area with no ventilation you suffer oxygen deprivation, pass out and die.
Because of this Fumigations have to have a warning agent released ( tear gas). When you air the structure out the Vikane disipates at a faster rate than tear gas.
If you did happen to break into a tented house that was being ventilated and didn’t smell tear gas, there would be no risk of being overcome by Vikane.
Still not a smart thing to do. Some companies may try to cut corners and not use a warning agent.
“The clerk fired three rounds at Mr. Ahorrio”
and a customer faints. Well, at the very least, he’s too dumb to get a real job and get off the streets now, so he’s in jail where he belongs.
Maybe Ahorrio’s telling us something? Wants to be kept in a cage, fed regularly and go for walkies on a leash?
It’s Mass. He’ll be out in a year, and go right back to the same shit.
There’s a woman running for DA there who wants to eliminate cash bail and basically not prosecute a whole host of crimes, including larceny under $250 and dealing drugs, to name a couple.
Gee, I hope she gets held up at gunpoint several times. It might make her change what little mind she had in her skull.
I think you mean AG?
That would be Maura Healey.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maura_Healey
SJW on steroids.
“On July 20, 2016, Healey announced her intention to ban the sale or transfer of most semi-automatic rifles inside the Commonwealth of Massachusetts”
“Healey’s women’s rights platform focuses on sex education, expanding access to abortion services in Massachusetts and ensuring that every woman in Massachusetts has access to abortion regardless of where she lives, her occupation or her income”
So murder is ok if it relates to sex but not ok if it involves saving lives and women having access to the means of self defense.
Massachusetts borders Connecticut.
The safest route out of Northern Maine is US RTE 2 west from Bangor all the way across NH and VT to Burlington, cross Champlain on the ferry and take 87 then 88 south to Wilkes Barre.
Adds an extra day but avoids MA CT and NYC suburbs.
On this day in Naval History:
October 11th 1776 – Today is the anniversary of arguably the most important naval battle of the American Revolution. It was fought on a fresh-water lake (Lake Champlain) by an American force consisting of seventeen small vessels, commanded by an army general, Benedict Arnold. (Yes the one who became America’s most notorious traitor.) Opposing it was a larger British flotilla, firing a weight of metal almost twice that of the American ships. Not surprising, therefore, the British destroyed the American fleet and decisively won the battle of Valcour Island.
Why then is it such an important battle? Because to deal with the threat posed by this rag-tag American fleet, the British expended precious time to assemble their own naval force, costing them the opportunity to invade the United States along the route of the Hudson River during the campaign of 1776. After their victory, the British retreated to Canada, regrouped, and waited until the next spring to begin driving southward. By then the Americans were better prepared and the invaders were unsupported because the main British army in America had left New York. As a result, the Americans forced the surrender of the invading force at Saratoga, New York. This victory, in turn, helped convince France to ally itself with the United States, broadening the American Revolution into an international conflict and stretching British resources to the breaking point.
Thus a little-remembered naval battle at the battle of Valcour Island changed the course of the war and led directly to American victory.
“For the want of a nail a shoe was lost”, funny how the seemingly inconsequential things can change history.
2019 Social Security Bump Is Biggest in 7 Years for Retirees
Find out how large of an increase you can expect next year.
Social Security recipients will soon receive the largest increase in their monthly benefits that they’ve seen in seven years.
The U.S. Social Security Administration announced Thursday that beneficiaries will receive a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, next year.
My research gave two different values for military retiree COLA. One stated 2.8% and the other 2.9%. Either way, both military retiree pay and social security pay are pretty decent.
As a result, a worker who was receiving $1,422 per month in Social Security benefits prior to the COLA would receive $1,461 after the COLA takes effect, according to Social Security Administration estimates. A couple receiving $2,381 before the COLA would receive $2,448 after.
The COLA will take effect in January for more than 62 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It will take effect on Dec. 31 for more than 8 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits — income supplements for people who are aged, blind or disabled and who have little to no income.
2018 — 2 percent
2017 — 0.3 percent
2016 — 0 percent (no adjustment)
2015 — 1.7 percent
2014 — 1.5 percent
2013 — 1.7 percent
2012 — 3.6 percent
By law, COLAs are tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor. COLAs are meant to counteract the effect of inflation on Social Security and SSI payments.
Oh, they just could not add that extra .2%, could they? 😛
Well, the 2.8% also applies to VADC benefits, so it doesn’t seem like a lot but it’s a bump up on how much money on can spend on groceries and stuff like that.
And yes, I do remember the 0.0% raise in 2016 – thanks, bodaprez! Such a generous warthog he was!!
BTW, along with several other ballplayers of that era, he didn’t have to serve but felt an obligation to do so. What a guy. SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW! DID YOU KNOW…..that Ted Williams, a professional baseball player, was a US Sailor and a Marine! American professional baseball player and manager. He played his entire 21-year Major League Baseball career as the left fielder for the Boston Red Sox. Williams was a two-time American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner, led the league in batting six times, and won the Triple Crown twice. A nineteen-time All-Star, he had a career batting average of .344, with 521 home runs, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. Served in WWII and the Korean War. He joined the V-5 program to become a Naval aviator. He received preflight training at Athens, Georgia; primary training at NAS Bunker Hill, Indiana; and advanced flight training at NAS Pensacola. He received his wings and commission in the US Marine Corps on 2 May 1944. He served as a flight instructor at NAS Pensacola teaching young pilots to fly the F4U Corsair. He was in Pearl Harbor awaiting orders to join the China fleet when the war ended. He finished the war in Hawaii and was released from active duty on 12 January 1946; however he did remain in the reserves. On 1 May 1952, at the age of 34, he was recalled to active duty for service in the Korean War. After eight weeks of refresher flight training and qualification in the F9F Panther jet at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, he was assigned to VMF-311, Marine Aircraft Group 33 (MAG-33), based at K-3 airfield in Pohang, Korea. On 16 February 1953, Williams was part of a 35-plane strike package against a tank and infantry training school just south of Pyongyang, North Korea. During the mission a piece of flak knocked out his hydraulics and electrical systems, causing Williams to have to “limp” his plane back to K-13, an Air Force base close to the front lines. For his actions of this… Read more »
This is for all you golf lovers out there!
DID YOU KNOW…..that Arnold Palmer was in the Coast Guard!
Arnold Daniel Palmer is an American professional golfer, who was generally regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s professional golf.
Arnold joined the Coast Guard at a crossroads in his life. Already well regarded as an amateur golfer at Wake Forest University, a personal tragedy led him to rethink his priorities.
“I was at Wake Forest for three and a half years and my roommate got killed in an automobile accident and I was pretty distraught over that and decided that I needed to get away, I decided to join the Coast Guard.” recalled Arnold in an interview.
Arnold credited his Coast Guard service with helping him at a time when his life needed some direction and had been vocal about wishing more young Americans would join the military.
Following recruit training at Cape May, Arnold’s first assignment was to stay at the training center as a physical fitness and self-defense instructor.
About a year later he was transferred to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a yeoman for the commander of the 9th Coast Guard District Auxiliary, now the US Coast Guard Reserve, and ultimately for Rear Admiral Roy L. Raney, 9th Coast Guard District commander.
Arnold enjoyed the discipline of military life but particularly enjoyed having many of his weekends off to continue to compete in golf tournaments with the blessing of Admiral Raney who received regular golf lessons from Arnold while they served together.
Admiral Raney was so taken with Arnold that he recommended the young Sailor to pursue a career as a Coast Guard officer.
When Arnold was discharged after serving in the Coast Guard for three years, it was a loss for the Coast Guard but was the golf world’s gain.
But Arnold never forgot about his opportunity to serve and continued to follow the exploits of America’s Coast Guard to the day he died.
Arnold Palmer passed away on 25 September 2016, shortly after his 87th birthday.
On net today showing her being pushed in a wheelchair, giving everyone the universal sign of love. Actually, it was the middle finger. Just a real classy pig. Would be a shame if the rat squirrel had made an escape and someone ‘mistakenly’ squished the shit out of it. Harkens back to The Green Mile”.
Need to get a handle on this shit. Unfortunately, the feds are going to have to get involved, which will further fuck up the situation. Forget it. The gov will have it fucked up 9 ways to Sunday. The airlines should allow dogs and cats and nothing else. People have a damn entitlement mentality. Fuck them.
