DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
———————-
At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Florence was
located near latitude 25.0 North, longitude 60.0 West. Florence is
moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h). A west-northwestward

Take heed and protect your home, then get the hell out of there! Irma last year was bad for us, I won’t stay thru another one, it just ins’t worth it. My wife and I had to hold the front doors closed for over 3 hours to keep the wind from blowing them in! Then the tornado came and tore off the roof! I will never stay thru another one again!

‘Hampton Roads Navy ships to sortie ahead of Hurricane Florence’

https://www.13newsnow.com/article/news/local/mycity/norfolk/hampton-roads-navy-ships-to-sortie-ahead-of-hurricane-florence/291-592164865

‘NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — Navy ships in the Hampton Roads area have been commanded to set Sortie Condition Alpha in preparation for Hurricane Florence and will begin to sortie on Monday.

Sortie Condition Alpha means the that “sortie commences to avoid heavy weather,” according to a Navy news release.

Additionally, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic ordered all Navy installations in the Hampton Roads area to set Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness Three (III), meaning sustained destructive winds of greater than 50 knots associated with a tropical system are expected within 48 hours.

The Navy sent out a tweet that ships will be making final preparations this weekend in anticipation of getting underway Monday ahead of Florence.

“.@USFleetForces orders all #USNavy ships in Hampton Roads area to set Sortie Condition Charlie, making final preparations this weekend in anticipation of getting underway Monday ahead of #Florence that may become major hurricane –
9:44 AM – Sep 8, 2018”

On Monday morning, Florence strengthened to a major hurricane and is expected to make landfall later this week along the Carolina coastline.

No evacuation orders have been issued for personnel at this time, the Navy said.

The Navy said all personnel and their families should review their Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFAAS) account at https://navyfamily.navy.mil, as well as review hurricane checklists and evacuation plans in the event an evacuation is necessary. Service members are encouraged to discuss evacuation and reporting requirements with their chain of command and family members.’

That’s bad advice when the sky is falling. Better to get some boards, nail them (3 in preferred) to your house. Drain all the water and shut the main valve off to prevent backup. Take all of your household cleaners, gas, and other chemical dangers and packs them in a high and dry spot, such as the 2nd floor of the house. Don’t forget that the lawn mower, unless drained of oil and gas, needs to go up there too. Cars! Get them off the ground. Jacks and jack stands will get them at least a foot up, which is minimum for safety. Turn off your electric now. You probably won;t be able to get to it in a few days. Don’t get many batteries. Others need them too you know. What else? Oh. That last will and testament you have been putting off. Get it done today, if at all possible. If not, write it out, date it, and have it witnessed by two people who are not named in the will. Fold it up, put it in a baggie, and swallow it. They’ll find it during the autopsy.

True dat A/C. My idea is if I owned ocean front property, first thing I’d do is sell hell out of it. Ma Nature, like Ms Karma, is a cast iron bitch. They will both win eventually if not sooner. Y’all be safe.

Mandatory evacuations are now underway in Dare County, NC.

I remember the “experts “ predicting beyond all doubts that Miami was going to be Ground Zero for Irma and it impacted Naples. Here’s hoping they’re wrong this time and Florence turns North and stays out at sea.

“turns North and stays out at sea”

That would put it in my area.
I’m 067 West. I will soon be east of it.
Maine is a lot farther east than people realize. Nova Scotia is south east of me.

thebesig

I’m looking at a global temperature and wind map. There are two high pressure systems influencing its direction. If it weren’t for the other one, it could very well stay out to sea, but the second one looks like it’s going to drive it on the predicted path right into the east coast.

Things could change, but if the current conditions remain in place, we’re getting hit.

FuzeVT

I was in Quantico, VA for Isabel in 2003. Being without power for three days is bad enough but I was lucky. Others had their power off for almost two weeks.

As Koko Taylor puts so eloquently, “Don’t mess with mother nature”

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I see the surface water temps are in the 80’S which tells me that possibly there wasn’t enough water evaporation to make enough salt to sink displacing the warm water and force up cooler water which do not go too great with Hurricane activity.

Ex-PH2

That long loop, unfortunately, looks like a gigantic sneeze.

Anyone who is out sailing a boat might want to reconsider and go back home.

The center looks like it’s going to go west of where I’m at right now. We’ve had a wetter than average summer this year. Heck, we’ve had a wetter than average year this year. Our ground’s ability to hold water has constantly been overwhelmed, causing flooding during relatively minor storms.

According to an astrophysicist who has been accurate regarding long range weather forecasting, where local weather reports had been wrong, we’re looking at up to three to four feet of rain in some areas.

A perfect storm for trees to get uprooted, and for floods. Both Carolinas and Virginia are under a state of emergency.

The Governor of Virginia just announced a Mandatory evacuation for Zone A, Hampton Roads/ Eastern Shore starting on 11 September @ 0800 Hours.

Wilmington, NC. I’m still praying that this yuan nag makes a swing north and east. I’m nervous as can be right now.

QMC

*Thing* see cant even type right either at this minute.

26Limabeans

“yuan nag”
You nailed it the first time.

Fm2176

Here in The Old Guard, we’re treating it like business as usual. I live almost 40 miles south of Myer and personally I hope for some time off due to the storm (odd how service members view potential disasters as merely “time off”) but professionally I don’t mind conducting a few funerals in a bit of bad weather. I fully expect the Sentinels to continue their duties regardless, so who am I to complain about a little wind and rain? Better than last week’s heat and sun.

I’ll consider it training for my retirement to the Gulf Coast in a few years…

Mandatory evacuation for the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. What is interesting is that “refusing to comply with the evacuation order would be a Misdemeanor, but officials said they do not have the resources to go door-to-door…”:

You’ll always have those who think they’re totally invincible and end up like those 24 people who held a “hurricane party” on the third floor of the Richelieu Manor Apartments in Pass Christian, Mississippi as Hurricane Camille made landfall.

NHSparky

Mrs. Sparky used to live in the Delmarva peninsula area, and I’m sure they’re in for a whole world of shit.

Hunker down, people.

Ex-PH2

Governor of South Carolina has ordered evacuations of all coastal areas ahead of “unprecedented” hurricane.
I wondered how long it would take the lamestream media to use hyperbole in a story. They never fail me.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/reports-entire-coast-of-south-carolina-ordered-to-evacuate-ahead-of-unprecedented-hurricane-florence/70006014

Dwight Schwarz

Unprecedented, having no precedent; never done before; never known before. adj. Thorndike Century Junior Dictionary, Revised Edition, Copyright 1942. The description of the storm seems applicable as to Florence is said to be predicted to be strongest storm to ever hit that area of the coast in the present recorded history of the area. Stay safe Dave and above ground there, here are to be close to record temps for next few days and is time to prepare for blizzards in the future due to weird weather here this year.

Dwight Schwarz

Well yesterday broke record high temp here, 4 more days of possibilities of repeat here, it is September, I think. Here to west coast we have many fires and south and east has floods.
