Dick’s Is Down
Looks like Dick’s ideas of how to do things to please customers and bolster their public image is backfiring.
https://www.nraila.org/articles/20180831/dick-s-sales-soft-following-anti-gun-efforts
Their consolidated 2nd quarter earnings (all stores, all departments, all products) are down 4%. While this can legitimately be related to the decision by CEO Stack to cease and desist gun sales and destroy remaining stock in stead of returning those products to the manufacturers, the company, with help from CNN, America’s ‘most trusted name in news’ – the network that had Maddow’s bratchet-faced mug on display for hours during November 2016’s incorrect election forecast – considers acceptable a fabricated news release about this loss of earnings.
CNN says now that investors should ignore Dick’s own admissions regarding the negative consequences of their gun control positions and blame stiff competition from online retailers and the store’s delicate relationship with one of its apparel brands for the inadequate performance.
Yeah, okay. Denial of reality is a sign of something worse. CNN by now may be the worst propaganda rag/network since Pravda/Izvestia. Certainly, it is not a reliable source of information for anything. And if altering a sales report to suit their needs of reality is what CNN thinks makes them trustworthy, they have a problem.
In May, the Board of Governors for the National Shooting Sports Foundation – the firearm industry trade group – voted to expel the company “for conduct detrimental to the best interests of the Foundation.”
Stack had already correctly predicted a negative effect on sales back in March. Loss of sales in all departments is not a good sign.
Well, Gander Mountain is mostly gone into the mists of retail history.
L. L. Bean has its own stores, but is still mostly camping, hiking and fishing, as it has always been. That, and duck boots.
Bass Pro is still in business and seems to be thriving. Bass is the parent company of Cabela’s. Bass Pro has a fish-o-rama in the spring, about when the smelts are running in the Great Lakes.
I think people will go where they feel welcome, not snubbed because they want a particular product.
But then, I would question the idea that someone who is so blatantly anti-gun should be running a company that he has decided should no longer sell guns.
Category: Gun Grabbing Fascists, Guns
I bought a couple of sweaters from Dick’s a few years ago before Dicks CEO turned out to be a real Dick.
So a gun store doesn’t sell guns anymore? Yeah, that’ll go well….
What dumbass expected a bunch of millenials to want to buy camping, fishing, and other outdoors equipment because a company said they’d stop selling guns? Millenials don’t even know how to boycott correctly, let alone buy stuff to support a company for taking a PC/SJW stand.
Isn’t this kind of like watching Sears cave in on itself?
They still sell guns, just not the scary black ones.
But do they actually SELL guns if nobody is buying? 😉
Birkenstocks, patchouli oil, and hemp sweaters must have better profit margins. 🙄
Millenials mostly buy on the internet, so they have little need to go to brick and mortar stores, which is the only venue Dick’s has for firearms sales. So, what they did exemplifies a strong example of “the stoopid,” from a marketing standpoint. Why have chains of brick and mortar stores when you are alienating a large percentage of the people inclined to patronize them?
Yeah, the leftards’ calls for boycotts on Chick-Fil-A and In and Out Burgers sure did wonders, both franchise chains are laughing all the way to the bank!
That is just about as brilliant as MacDonalds not selling hamburgers anymore…is that moron completely insane or what? And the board members must be just as dense to let the a.h. destroy the business! imo
Not to be outdone in its assault on customers, Nike has signed Krapernick to help sell its sportswear. The commercial featuring the kneeler-in-chief features his corpse-like mug and the words, scrawled across it read, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Right off the bat, I see that the ad writer sacrificed a complete second sentence but used a period anyway. A smidge more important is the notion of his having sacrificed everything. Last I looked, he had his life, his limbs, his sight, his hearing and a shit load of money. I guess Nike’s idea of sacrifice is different from mine.
And their stocks are down 3% as I type this.
Good to know, Garold. Keep us informed on that, please.
Well, as I saw a poster reply on this subject over on Victory Girls, Nike does know it’s customer base, largely hood-rat thugs, so Craperdick is the perfect spokes”man” for that demographic….
Know who is not down, AOBC, the bid-ness fka Smith and Wesson Holding. Up almost 50% since that assweasel David Hogg ‘declared war’ on ’em.
Their long gun sales (read: AR-15) sales are up yoy and in spite of declining NCIS checks (yoy and mom), pistol sales are up.
Dicks… take note: people that buy guns are many AND they don’t like corporations deciding their rights.
disclosure, last 72 hrs: own AOBC, no pos on Dicks
Oh, that’s good to know, too.
Dick’s is going limp?
Pravda and Izvestia. I’d forgotten about Izvestia. At my first duty station after basic and training schools we used to receive English translated versions of those two rags to peruse. I sorta miss that fun reading.
The old Soviet saw, “Pravda” meaning “Truth” and TASS for “News.”
So there is no news in truth, and there is no truth in news.
Sounds a whole lot like out current Lame Stream Media these days.
As Mark Twain said, “If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re mis-informed.”
Dicks in my hometown just closed…stopped by the mall for lunch today and nothing but “for lease” signs on the windows…for that matter, nearby Gander Mountain which opened fairly recently closed too….seems stupid to pick fights when retail is reeling…
The reason why Gander Mountain to a dirt nap is because of their overpriced guns and ammunition. When I paid $200 less for the same identical pistol buying it from someone else; that will reduce your sales. When you hoard .22 LR ammo and only parse it out to select customers; that will reduce your sales. When your ammunition runs 15% higher than other places; it will reduce your sales.
I don’t shop at DICKS, because they’re just that; dicks.
Cabella’s and Wally World get my greenbacks.
If I could give you a thumbs up, I would, Old Trooper!
Just FYI OT, wally world decided that there was no reason to respect the 2nd Amendment rights of 18-21 year olds…. So for me, if they won’t sell a shotgun to my son, they damn sure won’t be selling anything to me…
Academy Outdoors gets my greenbacks – when I have some I can spend with my wife’s permission.
Midway is selling guns now. They are one of my favorite companies. Mid South Shores Supply is another good ammo supply. Cheaper than Dirt has some great deals on ammo. Graf and Sons always has ammo deals. Don’t forget your local gun shop. They are like an every day gun show without the admission fee. No Dick’s for me.
Oops, Mid South Shooters Supply.
I’m a Bass Pro Shops junkie myself, but I also like shopping at Mom & Pop stores first. I also give KUDOS to the smaller stores that advertised with “We sell AR15’s because WE AREN’T DICK’S!”
I like that! Two shops in my general area I like to visit are The Powderhorn in Williston Vt. and Alstead Gun Shop in Alstead N H.
The Powderhorn is part of the law suit against the State of Vermont over the bullshit laws passed last session. I highly recommend them!
get woke, go broke.
My newest motto
LOL
I can’t claim any credit…heard it from a youngster at work a few weeks ago….
I swapped Dick’s for Academy Sports in my neck of the woods as soon as their CEO started publicly acting like a leftwing activist instead of the head of a business corporation.
First glance at the story line, thought maybe a certain prescription medication had lost it’s special effect. Reading into the well written and comprehend able article cleared that up quickly. I, like other posters, have never bought from Dicks cause, well, you know, they’re Dicks. First rule of marketing/business management is, Don’t piss off Customers. Not that many to go around, and the competition is either right across the street, around the corner, or now days, just a mouse click away. Again, I try to do the majority of my spending at independently owned or operated stores, a little tougher, some times a tad more expensive, but to me, worth it in the long term. Most of these big box retailers are their own worst enemies and have been chewed up by the same practices that they used to chew up their competitors. No sympathy for any of them. Any one remember the locally owned/operated franchised Western Auto, Otasco, Coast to Coast, and even Sears ect.ect., that was in just about every small town USA? On the Nike/Crapernick deal, saw a post that brother sent me, had Pat Tilman’s face with the new Nike logo/saying written across it. Now THAT Man was a true Hero, that used to be a NFL Player and sacrificed. Deo Vindice
I went shopping in Dick’s ONCE . It appeared to be just a yuppy golf joint . Don’t play cow pasture pool , so I shop at Bass Pro .
I grew up in the Midwest and remember OTASCO and Western Auto. A number of my childhood pals rode around town on Western Auto bicycles! Last time I was up there I still saw some True Value Hardware stores.
Now CNN is suggesting Trump could be impeached because he criticized Sessions;

Straws again. Grasping at straws. Keep collecting this stuff. Some day, it may provide more entertainment than you anticipate now.
WAR STORY ALERT: I actually met Dick at a Bass Pro event in Pittsburgh. Now my claim to fame is no one can say “I don’t know Dick”. For the record, he didn’t think it was funny either.
I thought that I had the monopoly on the puns and yolks Club Manager.
Did I ever tell you guys that my late brother-in-law’s name was Dick Handler?
Of course, he preferred Richard.
I have found a real good locally owned gun store that also has a nice range for practice. I was there Saturday and bought another black scary rifle from them! Their prices are very competable and they have a very nice selection. I always try and do business with local family owned businesses! They truly stand behind what they sell. They also give a nice discount to veterans!
I also love their name, “Spray and Pray” check out their website. Located in beautiful downtown Sebring Florida!
I wonder if they will sell to a visiting Marine from Missouri. My Wife’s sister and Husband have a place down there tat they fly to in early NOV. after voting and return to Ohio when spring activates.
If your into Formula-I racing, Sebring hosts a 12 hour race in mid-March. You can hear the cars practicing and running the race from my brother’s place.
DD, FL honors a GA CCP, you can walk into any store and buy. They will do a computer check, takes a coupla minutes. Not sure about MO recip.
You still have to have a firearm shipped to an FFL in your home state.
Which sucks, why should I have to check my Second Amendment God Given Right to self defense when I leave my home state.
I know that the House is working on giving the same treatment to LTC, CCW permits as an out of state driver’s license, but until they get reciprocity it get’s really hairy when you are traveling with a firearm or purchasing one. It’s an added $25.00 pretty much minimum and some places charge $50.00 or more to ship or accept an out of state firearm.
I wouldn’t even try anything in the NE corridor. That whole place hates American Civil Rights, especially the Second Amendment…
Yep, I live 150 yards from the front door of a great Academy where they are getting very used to my oh so handsome face !!! Truly a great place to live, along with a Whataburger and Taco Cabana that close too !!!
I like to support American companies, which means that it will be a long time before I get a new stove. A new oven ignitor will cost considerably less than a new stove, anyway, and I can wait on that.
However, I need new hiking boots, and have looked carefully at several companies, and find my preference is Danner, for various reasons. But right now, they are filling boots orders for the military, so I’ll get the stove fixed first.
Everything at its proper time.
Ex, might want to get Ms Punkin Squawky Pants to check Halls Safety Supply boots. I know that most of their lineman type product is made here, they are in PA. I’ve used them for 20 + years, and most of the construction gangs in the utility business use them. A little pricey, but it’s good stuff. They on the www, take plastic and ship same day
Thank you. I will look into that.
I am at a complete loss as to why any business would take sides in the culture wars
There is no upside to alienating any of your customers.
Now Nike has also decided to be anti American
So myself and many others, maybe millions of others, will no longer buy Nike or shop at Dicks.
If both companies had said nothing, they would still have all those customers from both sides.
How can losing customers ever be a good thing for a company?
Nike can do what it wishes. If, as someone pointed out above, the majority of their customers are gangbangers and thugs, I will never buy their products. Haven’t yet, and will continue to not buy from them.
Throwing politics into your business is a very bad idea, under any circumstances.
It is easy to “boycott” inferior products, and Nike makes inferior products.
No need to get into the whole “wokeness” part.
I find it hard to buy any decent products anymore that are made in the USA.
In case anyone is keeping score at home, Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc are all really poor quality.
What a shame.
Get woke, go broke.
Ah, Dick’s, where the women don’t do dick, as my father used to say (because a lot of the female employees tended to be rather butchy looking, from his experience at least).
Dick’s has also retained D.C. lobbyists who list gun control as their only reason for lobbying on disclosure forms.
They aren’t just passive leftards, they’re active!
Can’t wait to see what new business goes in when Dick’s shuts down. Should be inside 2 years.
Just down Fort Campbell Blvd from .. you guessed it .. Fort Campbell, there is a local
gun shop. On their display outside they have a sign:
“We sell AR-15’s, cause we’re not Dicks.”
Any photos you’d care to share???? If so, send them to Dave Hardin.
There’s a small Bass Pro in my AO. Along with sporting goods, they have a Beer Cave, and a fine selection of wine and spirits. A small selection of stogies, too.
So they’re the local chapter of the ATF- Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
Get woke… go broke.
