USS Harry S. Truman on patrol for Russian subs

| July 1, 2018

DocV sends us a link from USNI which reports that the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) has left the Mediterranean Sea and entered the North Atlantic on patrol for Russian attack submarines;

In terms of great power competition, there is growing evidence that Russia continues to push its newest attack submarines to operate the North Atlantic at a pace not seen since the Cold War, Navy leaders have continued to stress publicly.

“Russian submarines are prowling the Atlantic, testing our defenses, confronting our command of the seas, and preparing the complex underwater battlespace to give them an edge in any future conflict,” current U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa commander Adm. James Foggo wrote in U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings in 2016.
“Not only have Russia’s actions and capabilities increased in alarming and confrontational ways, its national-security policy is aimed at challenging the United States and its NATO allies and partners.”

The escort fleet includes at least six guided missile destroyers and the German guided missile frigate FGS Hessen.

[Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at CSBA] said the U.S. [destroyers] are equipped with an effective anti-submarine warfare packages that work well in the Atlantic but aren’t typically deployed there.

“You have to make a special effort to put them there,” he said.

USNI claims that the Truman’s mission will last several months.

I wonder if some day the Hoovers (aka, S-3 Viking carrier based ASW)will come back from the boneyard.

I’ll bet there’s some that wish we had not decommissioned the old SOSUS line of underwater microphones that ran through the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap.

US Military Returns to Iceland: Cold War Base to Reopen

Strategic Culture Link

In 2006 the US military left Keflavik, as the Navy shifted its focus away from the North Atlantic and toward the Mediterranean. Now, in a sharp change reminiscent of the Cold War, the US is reopening its former military base. Indeed, the strategic location midway between the US and Europe makes Keflavik ideal for patrolling the waters off the coasts of the UK, Ireland, Iceland, and Greenland. The value of the facility is immense for sending military reinforcements to Europe in case of a large-scale war.

US Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work visited Iceland last year to discuss the details with the Icelandic authorities.

During the visit he noted that the country was…

“…an incredible partner.

They have a longstanding relationship in coordinating P-3 flights, and we’d like to see what they can do to assist P-8 operations. They’re committed to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and they’re thinking about the P-8.”

Back to the bad old days. I left nothing in Kef, and have no desire to return there.

Why the HECK did we ever turn SOSUS off? That kind of thing just can’t be pulled out of the proverbial rabbit hat.

I have been out of the remote sensing world for a few decades but it seems to me that satellite sensing of the ocean depths would be routine by now. Can Subs really hide?

AW1Ed

Short answer? Yes, mostly. That’s about it, outside of a SCIF.

NHSparky

Uh, yeah.

And frankly, the best platform to find and track a submarine is another submarine, (SSN in this case.)

Too bad we’re already stretched way too thin as it is. 30 years ago, we had 100 SSNs. Today, we have 52. And consider how many of those are in the yards, etc.

desert

Yeh, thanks obama you P.O.S.!

NHSparky

Nah, that slide started in the late-80’s and early-90’s.

Peace dividend and all that.

“at a pace not seen since the Cold War”

So the Russians are sending out two or three boats?

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

WOW what a switch. 77+ years ago, U Boots were stalking American convoys going to Murmansk and now the Frigate Hessen is stalking the rusky subs along withe a U.S. escort Fleet. I hope their “Fleetfooted” during the patrol.

Ex-PH2

Well, well, well. What IS Vlad up to this time?

How many has he got “prowling” the North Atlantic? Two? 2.5? Is one of them named ‘Red October’, by any chance?

I wondered why he was selling liquified natural gas to the state of New Hampshire. Subs are expensive, right?

AW1Ed

“The escort fleet includes at least six guided missile destroyers and the German guided missile frigate FGS Hessen.”

The presence of two or more US Nuclear Fast Attack (SSN) submarines can be neither confirmed nor denied.

Where is Tom Clancy when you need him?

below the surface?

OWB

Is anyone really surprised? No, not really.

The 80’s called, they want their Forgien policy back…

HMC Ret

Yeah, remember that. Another moronic remark from the dummy in my White House.

Fyrfighter

It seems that quote should be played every time the JEF pokes his head out of whatever hole he’s in at the moment..

The Other Whitey

I feel like the “Hunt For Red October” sound track should play over this…

DocV

Time to dust off those ASW manuals that have been gathering dust.

I was once stationed at NAVFAC Argentia, Newfoundland when SOSUS was still a thing. Great duty station and great people.

AW1Ed

VP-49 split deployment Lajas/Rota,198X. Yankees kept us busy in the Atlantic. Med inchops Juliet/Charlie/Victors in Rota. Bring your “A” game for P-3 ASW or go home.

Damn I had fun!

Son-of-a-gun

There should be a sea story thread here…
As long as the truth wasn’t expected.

jonp

Damn it. I thought Trump took care of this with his colluding with Vlad and all. WTF?

Devil Chief

“Once more, we play our dangerous game, a game of chess against our old adversary – The American Navy. For forty years, your fathers before you and your older brothers played this game and played it well. But today the game is different.”

Jorge

Like NHSparky said above, best ASW platforn is another boat. Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.

All the Russians need to do is publish a perivis pic (or film) and the pundits will lose their frickin’ minds.

OSC(SW) Retired

Six DDGs? That has to be fun. I hated operating with those guys. ASW ops always turned into little kid’s soccer with those guys. “OOH a target, everybody steam toward it banging away on active.” My last deployment we were the lonely FFG and got put on tail duty away from the threat area, while the DDGs and CG played little kid’s soccer with sea mounts. The entire time my TMA team was tracking the OPFOR sub and making our position reports. At the hot wash our traces almost perfectly matched the sub’s track. And we got to clown the CIC and SONAR teams from all the other ships and ask them if they even knew what drawer at their chart table had bottom contour charts!

DocV

Anybody remember that “sinking” feeling when the OPFOR sub launched the dreaded green flare? Bang! You’re dead!
