Wednesday morning feel good stories
From Akron, Ohio;
The resident called police to report a man trying to break into her home in the 600 block of Wyandot Avenue shortly after midnight. The resident’s 36-year-old son struggled to keep the man from coming in the back door. The resident grabbed a handgun and gave it to her son, who shot the intruder, police say.
The two men continued to struggle and the son shoved the man out of the house and fired another shot. Police found the man in the backyard, where he was pronounced dead, police say.
“Send an ambulance,” the upset resident told a dispatcher in a 911 call. “My son had to shoot him!”
The woman told the dispatcher that the doorbell rang and she went to the front door, while her son went to the back door. She said the man kept trying to break in and her son shouted at him, “Get out of here!” and “Get off my mom’s property!” but he didn’t listen.
She said neither of them knew the man.
From Houston, Texas;
Police said a burglar first knocked on the door to see if anyone was home and then broke through a back window to gain entry to the house.
Two young sisters, 12 and 14, were inside when the man broke in through the back window, said Asst. Chief Sheryl Victorian. The siblings realized a burglar was inside, hid in a bedroom and called their mother. She alerted police, telling them there was a burglary in process at her home.
The mother then activated an alarm system, which the neighbor heard, according to police. He saw the burglary suspect coming out of the house and told him to stop. When he didn’t, the neighbor apparently felt threatened and shot the burglar twice with a rifle, Victorian said.
Around the same time that the neighbor confronted the suspect, the girls’ father came home and thought his daughters were still in danger, Victorian said. He broke down the front window and pulled the girls out to rescue them.

The other feel good news is that Manning lost his bid for a Maryland Senate seat.
That is terrible news. His own party was predicting a landslide loss if he went to the general election.
“He saw the burglary suspect coming out of the house and told him to stop. When he didn’t, the neighbor apparently felt threatened and shot the burglar twice with a rifle, Victorian said.”
Seeing how it is Texas and there were young ladies involved I imagine this case won’t get much scrutiny, especially if the burglar lives.
Houston has a very anti-gun sheriff nowadays. Hard to say what will be presented to the grand jury. At least we know it wasn’t one of those scary assault rifles – one nick on a toe would have instantly exploded his heart.
And in Ohio, the world is a more peaceful place……..now.
Good shooting, son. You made your mother proud.
Texas…neighbor felt threatened by a burglar…two wounds in the “back area” (if I read that correctly) Article mentioned similarities to the Joe Horn case…Joe was ultimately exonerated but was purportedly left flat broke by the process. I hope the neighbor gets no billed by the grand jury. Of course, if there’s a racial component, who knows and then there’s the potential civil suit with the much lower threshold of evidence. Somewhat on topic, I retook the Texas concealed carry course recently (took it first in 2010) because I wanted to be up on any changes in the law. Let’s say they were substantial and all for the better. Off the top of my head, Autofolding knives now legal (so the one I carried in Iraq and since relegated to the back of my safe is now useful again), pistol open carry in a proper holster is legal, and because of that any inadvertent “printing” of a concealed pistol is no longer “brandishing”. If you have a permit but mistakenly take a firearm or spare magazine through a TSA checkpoint, the local police won’t charge you.
Joe was a very good friend of mine, I worked with him for over 20 years! The sad thing about his case was he was protecting his neighbors property when the perps broke in! He deserves a medal for his actions instead of law suits!
Is Austin still notorious for ignoring state firearms law?
Many moons ago a friend of a friend was delivering a prisoner to Austin. To his surprise, APD arrested the cop as he stepped off the plane in Austin. Understand that from then on, every jurisdiction in the state let Austin know that if they wanted their prisoners, they would nave to come get them themselves.
Evidently at the time it was against the law for anyone including LE, to be armed in the state, with the possible exception of US Marshalls. Apparently it was the custom to just ignore it among LEOs. I dunno – made no sense to me.
I don’t know about this, but was the perp who was leaving the house heading toward the neighbor or away from the neighbor who asked him to stop and was the perp armed???? Running toward you is one thing and running away from you with no danger involved and you shoot????? I don’t know the whole story.
