I’m a combat veteran and everyone should own an AR rifle

| March 26, 2018

I know how stupid that sounds, because I’ve been reading articles these last few weeks from supposed combat veterans who think that no one should own AR rifles and they sound pretty stupid to me. Being a combat veteran has nothing to do with the gun control discussion. Nothing.

It’s just like the controversy every year at the Fourth of July celebrations where we’re supposed to be mindful of veterans when we ignite our fireworks. It’s just a bunch of people trying to remind you that they want you to believe that they’re combat veterans.

It’s really nothing more than attention-whoring at it’s worst. It’s on par with me saying that because I’m a combat veteran, you don’t deserve a tax cut. One has nothing to do with the other.

The Second Amendment is meant to apply to everyone whether they served in the military or not, that an armed population guarantees freedom for all of us from enemies both foreign and domestic. The Bill of Rights was written to protect the minority from the majority, the Bill reminds us that some rights are God-given.

The Declaration of Independence says that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In the spirit of that, when the founders wrote the Constitution, they added the Bill of Rights in order to protect us from the government being too intrusive into our lives and our pursuit of happiness.

If the Second Amendment wasn’t so important, why else would thousands of people gather this past weekend to announce their intention to disarm us? Why else would this Daryl Fisher fellow be running for sheriff in Buncombe County, North Carolina on a platform of prying our guns from our cold, dead hands?

You people realize that these kinds of proclamations aren’t making it easier for us to stomach seizure of our guns, right?

In response to the moron in the picture, Challenge Accepted.

CPT11A

You know he’s not going to show up, Jack. Nor is the doofus at the top. Nor are any of these Twitter warriors who insist they want our guns.

Nope, they’re going to turn to people like me- Guardsmen and cops.

It will end poorly for them.

SFC D

When they come for mine, they need to be careful. The barrel will be very hot, and I’d hate for them to burn their widdle fingers.

Graybeard

As they slip on the pile of hot brass around us?

Ex-PH2

I will have hot bacon grease on hand to douse them.

Atkron

Isn’t it amazing that ‘we’ still ignore that the FBI, Coward County Sheriff’s Office, Broward County School District were all complicit with the killings?

If it weren’t for all of their collective fuck-ups this shooting either never would have happened, or had been minimized by following the Columbine Doctrine.

Instead, these dumbasses want to go after the low hanging fruit in order to feel like they are accomplishing something. By doing this they play right into the hands of those that seek absolute power over the populace.

There was a time in this nation where “Give me Liberty or give me death!” was a rally cry.

Now, I see signs like Are your freedoms really worth more than your safety?

YES! Fuck you for being stupid enough to ask that question.

Atkron

Sorry, this was supposed to be a stand-alone post.

Ex-PH2

Without freedom, you have NO safety. Ask anyone who escaped the Soviet Union before it disintegrated. Ask anyone who survived under Pol Pot’s regime, like TOW’s in-laws.

The Other Whitey

My Father-In-Law doesn’t own any weapons (he says if it ever goes sideways, he can get what he needs from me), but he is adamant that the right to keep and bear arms MUST be preserved. He’s seen firsthand what happens when the people no longer have the means to resist.

Graybeard

Your F-I-L is one whose “moral authority” on the subject I willingly accept.

Ex-PH2

Do you have a photo of something like that, Atkron?

rgr769

People who sacrifice their personal freedom for a feeling of imagined safety end up with neither. Many experience a slow agonizing death in a concentration or “labor” camp, like those operated in every Communist totalitarian shithole during the past 100 years. These child twat-waffles should have to spend a few months in Venezuela where people thought they were voting for “safety.” In 1969 I spent a day in East Berlin and saw up close and personal what that “safety” looks like. I’ll take my freedom over that so-called safety. The totalitarian police state is not pretty when you are in one. It was the grimmest place I was ever in. The difference between it and West Berlin was shocking.

rgr769

Speaking of lovely Venezuela, where people voted of safety instead of freedom, there was a recent report about their new “fatherland” voter ID cards everyone will be required to carry. Citizens will have to present it to get food. Maduro’s government will require everyone to present one to vote. Their new system will show whether you voted (and how). If you didn’t vote for the gov’t in the last “election,” no food for you! That is the kind of “safety” one gets after the freedom has been surrendered. Oh, and Venezuela now has the highest homicide rate in the Western hemisphere.

CPT11A

So, having eliminated the free market and assumed all responsibility for the welfare of the populace, the Venezuelan government institutes an actually cruel form of voter ID, while normal people resort to eating feral dogs. Who’s surprised?

UpNorth

So, what you’re saying, RGR, is that Venezuela is another socialist “paradise”?

rgr769

Yes, it is stumbling toward the lovely socialist end-point so carefully characterized in Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” where all animals are equal but the pigs are “more equal.” One good thing though, there won’t be a stray cat and dog problem there (Venezuela) soon. I imagine their “walking dead” days are only a few years away.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

As Jefferson so famously wrote: “Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem.”

It’s been translated a couple of different ways,

My preference is, “I prefer a dangerous freedom over a peaceful slavery”

It has also been translated as this, lesser favorite to me, “I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude.”

Both get the point across but the first is more truthful in my opinion, even if not as correct as the second with respect to the translation.

Freedom is dangerous, it’s also often rude and loud. It’s never truly safe, but I would rather risk everything to get everything than risk nothing to allow someone else to determine my needs.

E4 Mafia For Life.

As well as:
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”
-Banjamin Franklin

A direct repudiation to the simpleton holding the sign.
As we know, this is a result of those who neglected to study history, had revisionist history and/or didn’t live thru it.
Probably most of us lived thru the Cold War and Russia and it’s elements were the boogeymen we trained to fight against.

2/17 Air Cav

Holy Hannah. I think now I have seen everything. Do you think she knows that her “Freedom” was won and is maintained by those who think of safety as a mechanism on a rifle?

timactual

Now that you mentioned it (safety), I don’t believe those Revolutionary War era firearms had safeties. That means, according to some anti-gun theorists, that present day firearms should not have safeties either.

Milo Mindbender

Half cock, almost a safety with a flintlock the hammer will not release with the trigger, and is not in the fire position.

Seal Two

Although occasionally the hammer would slip forward, but not with enough force to ignite the powder in the pan. Thus the term “going off half-cocked…”

The Other Whitey

“Is freedom more important than safety?”

Hmm, the Roosevelt administration claimed that ethnically-Japanese Americans were being dispossessed of their property and forced into internment camps in the early months of 1942 for their own safety. You tell me.

SFC D

Aaaaaand what was his political affiliation?

The Other Whitey

I still have to see just ONE of these snowflake freaks who are so concerned with the kids killed in the school, to say something about the 60+ million kids slaughtered by abortion and the stinking dumocraps who managed to keep it in the lastest bill for US to pay for it!!

Old Trooper

I bet he wouldn’t be smiling so smugly if you walked up and dick punched him.

Yup. Come Get Some

David

Any gun designed for the military – effectively all handguns, almost any rifle, and pump shotguns. Yeah, right. Better not try that cold dead hands thing in person, bucko… sounds like you might run into problems.

The Other Whitey

Knives, boots, shovels, helmets, fish hooks, batons, axes, and hammers were all invented for military use. That’s a lot of shit to ban! Wait, all that track & field stuff from high school was designed for military use, too!

Ex-PH2

Do you guys remember those big cauldrons that were used to boil oil to dump on the castle invaders?

Yeah, those were for cooking enough food to feed the troops.

SFC D

They were not assault cauldrons, they were purely defensive weapons.

The Other Whitey

Defensive cauldrons were made of iron. Assault cauldrons were frangible ceramic pots that would shatter and spread incendiary chemicals on impact when launched via trebuchet.

NEC338x

Fire pots make a wonderful addition for your trebuchet!

Thunderstixx

We’ll be prying the guns from his cold, dead hands…

The city of Asheville (Buncombe County) continues to gradually turn into NC’s version of San Francisco in the mountains. It’s pretty much where we store away all our stank ass hippies. I’m sure he’ll fit right in with them.

Ex-PH2

The only people who are afraid of an armed populace are people with a hidden agenda.

The Other Whitey

Tyranny is the state in which people fear their government. Liberty is the state in which the government fears the people.

Ex-PH2

Yes, and they had damned well better fear us, because we can fire them just as easily as not.

Roger in Republic

Or fire ON them,same,same.

desert

And we need to START firing them! There are a bunch of culls on the senate and in congress, including the leadership that need to be shytcanned!

Brown Neck Gaitor

Good thing you don’t need a permit to buy a firearm in NC, cause if they kept a record of the permit that would make it real easy to find you.

Oops…

The Other Whitey

Sounds to me like that fat bastard Fisher and his limp-wristed fellow-traveler pictured holding the sign are making threats against the lives of 100+ million Americans. Riding right past the part where they’re clearly not thinking this whole thing through and are going full fascist (with everything that entails), here’s my reply:

COME GET SOME, MOTHERFUCKER!

If you’re coming for mine, you better bring yours! I have repeatedly been asked by disbelieving would-be confiscators if I really think keeping my weapons is worth my life. My answer to that is: Is taking them away worth yours?

OC

Our side has roughly 8 trillion rounds of ammo.
Their side can’t figure out which bathroom to use.

Roh-Dog

So if someone spends 8+ years as an Infantryman doesn’t that make them a Doctor of Applied Violence?
Re interjecting one’s experience in this stupid ‘debate’, my logic goes something like this:
I’ve seen the real world consequence of a disarmed populace, as a combat Veteran.
As an expert in the use of force and military tactics I know how to use weapons and force, as a combat Veteran.
As a combat Veteran I would prefer people arm themselves, or at the least, have the right to.
How is that not pertinent to the conversation?
Maybe I’m missing something.

Roh-Dog

Sorry. I meant to post that stand alone.

See? That’s the thing. As a vet, i’ve been taught that ANYTHING can be a weapon of opportunity. You somehow manage to pry my rifle from my hands, I will stab you. You get my knife, I was bludgeon you with a friggen helmet. You get my helmet, I will resort to hands. It’s not the WEAPON that makes a person dangerous, it’s the MINDSET. Always has been.

Ex-PH2

I said that same thing in my article, Jay.

It is NOT the thing used as a weapon,.

It is the PERSON misusing it that matters. 9-inch cast iron skillets, for instance….

Old Trooper

Yeah, my wife uses one of those with precision. Not that I would know that………I’m just sayin’

USMC Steve

Don’t forget the venerable E-tool. The old one with a hardwood handle, not that silly thing they give them nowadays.

The Other Whitey

Give me an object, and I can probably figure out a way to kill somebody with it. All you need is the anatomical knowledge of an EMT and a modicum of creativity. Just as I could figure out plenty of easy ways to commit improvisational mass-murder without using any firearm.

Many posters on TAH have the knowledge necessary to commit unspeakable acts of violence using unconventional means. But we also possess moral convictions that prevent us from doing so.

NHSparky

Molon Labe, bitch.

jim h

so, on a scale of “one” to “bro” how badly do you wanna come at me?

UpNorth

“We” will pry it from your cold dead hands? I don’t see a crowd around, dumb ass. You think that sign will stop a round? Please, bring it with you when you show up to pry my weapon from my cold dead hands. Also, bring your last will & testament.

Flagwaver

He’s talking about sending armed officers to your house to confiscate your firearms after executing you. Like every tin-pot dictator in history.

The Other Whitey

Like Robert (master)Bateman, the self-proclaimed “Infantry violence expert” who spent his career hiding under a general’s desk.

rgr769

Are we sure that isn’t (master)Bateman in the photo, cuz the sign mirrors his attitude about these “weapons of war” which he never had to wield in combat?

The Other Whitey

I don’t think so, if only because the tool in the photo is not between a general’s knees.

2/17 Air Cav

Porky Fisher retired after 23 years with Asheville’s police department. He refers to himself as a Retired Police Executive, which is rather odd since he was not chief or number 2. Nowadays, he lists his employment by place (the local community college) not by function, which is also odd. He’s head of training for the campus police. Porky needs a job, so he’s running for sheriff. Towards that end, he will tell potential voters, in the case of the video, moms, what they want to hear.

3E9

Asheville is a great town, but it’s pretty much the Portland of the southeast. If you can duck the hippies and just find a decent mountain cabin it’s a great place to spend a few days.

2/17 Air Cav

I really don’t know what happened to North Carolina over the years. Some states have always been shit, but NC is not among them. My wife talked some about our moving there and my reaction wasn’t good. She likes beaches. I like mountains. She likes ponds. I like lakes and streams. She likes people. I don’t. It’s a marriage made in Heaven.

QMC

If you can avoid Asheville and Chapel Hill, you’ll be just fine. It’s still a great place to live.

Tallywhagger

The implication is, of course, that he intends to kill you. That’s the kind of guy that thinks he ought to be a NC Sheriff?

Better than he would be a chauffeur for Clarence “little dick” Dupnik.

SFC D

Only smart thing the Pima County board of supervisors ever did was to effectively stuff Doofnik in a locker after his brilliant declarations following the Gabby Giffords shooting. He pretty much disappeared and then retired. Even Bisbee didn’t want him back. Fuckstick.

borderbill (a NIMBY/BANANA)

Understand he was referred to as “Stoopnik” when he was at Bisbee HS. He lived in Califuckya for about a year—when he was still sheriff of Pima County.

rgr769

Never was a bigger pussy than ol’ Gersch. He certainly is aptly named. I heard his nickname in middle school was “Gush,” and he spent some quality time locked in his gym locker.

Alberich

I once read that the word “bunkum” originates with this same Buncombe County. (According to what I read, there was a North Carolina politician who wouldn’t stop talking drivel about the place.) This fellow’s keeping up the tradition.

Hondo

So, the Left desires more restrictive gun control. I wish they’d STFU – permanently – on all issues.

You think they’d agree to let me (or anyone else who’s not a Leftist) determine what constitutes the Left’s permissible speech and assembly?

Ex-PH2

How about voting privileges, Hondo?

How about compulsory voting or else, and there’s only ONE candidate and ONE party?

OH, I do remember that well, how the media complained about low voter turnout at elections in the USA and whined that there was – what? – 99% turnout in the Soviet Union.

rgr769

That is what the Maduro Electoral Plan is in Venezuela. If you don’t vote for the gubm’t with your “fatherland” voting/ID card, no food for you!

I dumped my Costco Citigroup card…activist Citi CEO is going after gun dealers…i’ll just pay cash from now on…I don’t believe the other major banks are going to follow suit but you never know

rgr769

I am jettisoning my Citibank card in May after my interest free deal expires and I pay off the balance. Guess what I am going to tell them when they try to talk me out of cancelling the card.

11B-Mailclerk

Make sure you instruct them to close the card “at the direction of the card holder” and to put that in your credit report.

I was recently advised by a financial pro that this notation very much reduced the credit score impact of a closed account.

Because unflagged that way, it gets recorded as if -they- dumped -you-.

Sgt Fon

i agree, no one should own a AR-15 in 5.56/223. in the overall scheme of things its an underpowered gopher gun. i think everyone should own an AR-10, SCAR-17H, M1A, M1 Garand, FNAR or similar caliber rifle in at least .30 cal.

now if you are talking about and AR in 300 Blackout or .458 SOCOM then i might give you an alibi. the only reason to own a AR-15 in 5.56/.223 is because surplus ammo is cheap.

me personally, prefer my Remington Versamax 12 ga and as much 3 1/2″ #4 buck as my SAW pouches will let me carry (92 shells total as of now, but i digress). as a civilian the chances of me ever taking a shot at someone 500m away is nonexistent, the chances of a 50m shot is much more realestic. with a XX full turkey choke and my fancey new Meprolight M21, 50 yards is not a problem, closer and well they would wish i only had a .223

11B-Mailclerk

AW1Ed;
I have a Rohrbaugh R9 .009MM made out in Long Island NY that I bought a number of years ago when I moved to Florida. Did you or anyone out there hear anything about Bond Arms buying out Rohrbaugh??

AW1Ed

Yep. Looks interesting, but I wasn’t in the market for another 9mm pocket pistol.

https://bondarms.com/bond-arms-handguns/bond-arms-bullpup/

Casey

A .009mm pistol? That’s awfully small…

David

.000354?

rgr769

Minor factoid: The original maker of them, back when they were single shot percussion pocket pistols, spelled his name with one “r.” One of Mr. Deringer’s guns is what was used to assassinate Pres. Lincoln. The most prolific derringer is the double barreled Remington in .41 Cal. rimfire; they were made from 1867 to 1935.

3E9

Bought the exact same one a few weeks ago. With .410 self defense rounds at about 15 feet that thing shredded the target.

AW1Ed

*grin*

The .45 Long Colt rounds are a hoot, too. Only two shots, but with .410s loaded I get eight rounds on target. And that’s no joke.

Also got the .22Mag barrel for rimfire fun.

I love it when these shit talkers start on taking our guns. Like all brainless ones, they assume that the government will do the job for them. What they don’t know is that about one hour after the word gets out that the grabbers have started their work, most of the Government Minions tasked with the confiscation will be at home protecting their own families from us. I doubt that the majority of american gun owners will sit quietly by and allow the Gestapo freedom of movement. There are about 800,000 police against 100,000,000 honest gun owners. It won’t end well for them. After we have dealt with the official grabbers we might just start on the shit talkers.

The Other Whitey

How many cops, Guard troops, and AD personnel do you think would hoist the Gadsden flag and join us? I’m guessing quite a lot of them.

CPT11A

The constitution never supported a permanent federal military. Each state is supposed to have a militia. Of course the Reagan Libertarian Conservatives never liked that and never will. They act as if they’re constitutional experts, but hate it when people point out that a large permanent federal military isn’t in it.

The spirit of the 2nd Amendment was to get the people equal with the power of the government. It’s a checks and balances thing. Today your guns are no better than rocks against the government. The 2nd Amendment is spiritless.

NHSparky

Nope. Fail. Limited size permanent military, yes. No permanent military? Try again.

And consider this: I don’t need tanks or nuclear weapons when it’s already illegal for the military (the federal kind) to act against the citizens, and the NG and police are not of sufficient number or like mind of the bureaucratic/chickenshit cucks who would ever seriously consider outright confiscation.

Bottom line, shit for brains–who’s going to take me guns? You? Your little douchebag “friends”? Cause the government can TRY, but even they know it’s nothing more than lip service.

The old “taken out of context” argument. Sorry, won’t carry any water, that’s exactly what he said.

‘“Don’t believe the scare tactics, because you’ve heard people say, ‘You’ll have to pry my gun from my cold, bare hands,’” Fisher is heard saying in a video posted by his campaign at the 3:04 minute mark. “OK … Whenever you pass away, we’ll come get it,” he quipped.’

The context was a Moms Demand Action meeting. So, to the extent that the words he spoke were taken from that meeting and repeated here and elsewhere, they were taken out of context. That’s the way these clowns think He’s whoring for votes. He needs a job. If a gun-grabbing fascist is what the people of that area want in a sheriff, they are welcome to him. Yeah, it’s all just political rhetoric until the Brown Shirts are in the streets knocking heads.

Reality check for those interested, but probably mostly directed to those least interested:

Combat veterans have no more rights than anybody else in this country. What combat vets have that the run of the mill citizen probably does not have is a LOT of training in how to safely handle firearms. (Some cops do as well but all too many do not.) Combat vets certainly are not trained in the military on the specific handling and characteristics of a wide variety of weaponry. The principles of safe handling do, however, apply to anything and everything they might acquire as civilians.

Conclusion: Of any arbitrarily selected group of Americans, combat vets, as well as most other vets who never saw combat, are the best trained in how to safely keep and bear arms. We know it and the gun grabbers know it. Perhaps that explains why they are so desperate to find excuses to disarm us first, something they have been doing successfully for decades now.

I’ve actually asked leftist colleagues over the years how gun confiscation would work. I’ve pointed out that many members of the military would not go along with it, and their whole scheme would be kaput. Their response is almost invariably to remind me that “soldiers follow orders”. Yep- they see members of the armed forces as an unthinking monolith that will do whatever their superiors say. It’s funny, because I, as the only service member in the convo, would say that assumption is wrong, but they’d insist. Since they almost without exception never served themselves, I can only assume that this belief comes from the movies. Especially anti-war ones. I don’t remember Platoon that well, but the soldiers in that movie commit a number of war crimes with nary a thought. Did someone order me to burn down this village full of civilians? Fuck yeah! There’s no knowledge of actual history. They know nothing of My Lai, where, while some soldiers committed atrocities, others challenged rank and orders to stop the tragedy. Further afield, they might know about Eichmann trying to excuse himself as simply following orders, but they know nothing of the members of the Wehrmacht, such as Rommel, who did ignore certain orders from Nazi high command. TL;DR? Soldiers are not unthinking automatons! I joined the military with a goal. I wanted to contribute to my vision of the world, where America’s enemies are put to the sword so that the safety and freedom of innocent Americans are preserved. I follow orders that feed into that. Even when those orders are lame. Deploy to Afghanistan, work in the S3, and prepare CONOPs with risk mitigation procedures for green-on-blue attacks during joint patrols? Ok, well, that’s not exactly “lead an infantry platoon into combat” but fine, I’ll do it. It contributes as part of this team to my ultimate goal. Same thing with “pee in a cup”, or “complete accident avoidance for the sixty-eighth time”, or “participate in DIV WarFighter as a 1LT” (yeah, that one really sucks). They contribute to my vision, even in the tiniest way, so… Read more »

And here we go. I have been saying for quite some time that as stupid as the Lefties are, they know damn well that existing gun laws are useless. But they demand more useless laws as a way of conditioning the rest of the country that, after decades of failed attempts to curtail gun violence by gun more and more statutes, the only answer is to eliminate that pesky 2nd Amendment. The drum beats have begun and the NYT is banging loudest with a guest editorial by uber lefty and retired Sup Ct Justice John Stevens. Says he, “They [gun protesters] should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment.”
