NJ students suspended for range pictures on social media

| March 19, 2018

NJ.com reports that two high school students in Lacey Township High School were sentenced to five days in-school suspension for pictures that they shared on social media of their day at a local range;

The photo of four rifles, ammunition clips and a gun duffel bag was shared by one of the students on the social media app Snapchat with the caption “fun day at the range,” according to Lacey Township resident Amanda Buron, a family friend of one of the students.

The school district superintendent, Craig Wigley, says that reports on social media are incorrect, but he fails to tell us what exactly is incorrect.

“We are not at will to contradict public opinion on the internet,” Wigley wrote. He declined to be interviewed by phone.

Huh? Once again in English, please.

Ed Cardinal, whose son attends the high school but was not one of the students involved in the gun range photo, said the district has overstepped in other ways.

District officials demanded that his son remove a window sticker depicting a gun from his pickup truck that he drives to school.

“He was kind of heated about it and so was I,” Ed Cardinal said, adding that they removed the sticker after administrators threatened to punish the teenager.

New Jersey is good place to live, if you hate firearms. They are about to ban .50 caliber rifles, even though one has never been used in a crime, the rifle itself is too big and too expensive to be considered by criminals, ammunition is priced right out of criminal market.

But, hey, when you want to do “something, anything” to make voters feel safer, there’s no easier target than legal firearms and lawful gun owners.

From the article linked above:

‘[…]

The controversy at Lacey’s high school has drawn the attention of a New Jersey gun advocacy group, which sent a cease and desist letter to the district threatening a lawsuit if its policy remained unchanged and the suspension of the students was not overturned.

The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs letter cited the rule stating students could be suspended for up to a year if they are “reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose on or off school grounds.”

[…].’

Off school grounds.

So if a student goes hunting with a firearm on the weekend and the school finds out about it, that student can be suspended from school for up to a year.

YGTBSM.

Peter the Bubblehead

Makes you wonder what other perfectly legal things the school thinks it can regulate or ban?

Graybeard

Support for anything not approved by the DNC.

OldSoldier54

Saw that, too.

Where does a school, any school, have the authority to dictate to any student what they may, or may not do, after school hours?

Talk about overreach …

Frankie Cee

Why in hell would parents even send their children to a school with a rule like this?: “…the rule stating students could be suspended for up to a year if they are “reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose on or off school grounds.””
NOTE: “For Any Reason, On or Off School Grounds”. What children do “off school grounds is no Damned business of theirs and is no part of “Education”. This is wrong in so many ways.

I have a question a few years ago my son was stabbed on two different occasions when he was at school in mid-school, both times there was a visible wound and blood, and so is that weapon going to be cause for suspension?

Oh, by the way the weapon was a #2 pencil. Two different ones by the same student; but he was a minority so just got an in school suspension the initial time and a 3 day the second time.

Inquiring minds want to know.

BlueCord Dad

As a lifetime resident of the People’s Republic of New Jersey, I’ve advised my oldest son(Army Infantry) NOT to return here to live. I’ll spend the extra bucks to visit him. Due to family obligations I cannot escape at this time. But I do have an alternate abode in the Sunshine State 🙂

Dinotanker

WTF!?

Was any of this on school property? Was a threat being communicated? If not someone needs to sue the hell out of that school district!

As far as the window sticker; pure utter PC bullshit.

In fact BOTH of these events seem to some kind of sparkle pony politics to appear to be “with it” for some reason.

Good lord, sputtering here, this is just hosed up…

Atkron

Sounds like any number of Districts on my side of the mountains…

Dinotanker

Atkron,

I was thinking about that as I was writing the above. I went to school in both the Edmonds and North Thurston school districts. I remember playing “war” during recess in Elementary school and talking about shooting and hunting in middle and high school. Western Washington has changed a lot since the 60′ and mid-70’s. I remember my buddies in high school having rifles locked up in their pick up trucks or car trunks. We would go out to see the newest weapon during lunch…in the school parking lot.

No one got shot, no one was frightened and it seemed just about everybody cleared the weapon before they looked at, even if their buddy had cleared it 30 seconds before. Those that demonstrated weapon ignorance were brought up to speed.

Not that the official stance is any better over here in E WA now. Both our sons have their own rifles, and know how to safely use them. They also know how to use revolvers and pistols. They also know that Mrs Dino is a better shot with a rifle than yours truly…dammit.

I keep threatening to buy a tank.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Save your $$ Dino, get a Martini and Snider. That SHOULD quench your big bore thirst. You have never seen a 4ft fireball and smoke cloud like one from a Snider carbine! Especially head turning at dusk!

Both cartridges can be made from 24ga brass.
Or, throw a quality modern .45-70 barrel on it and enjoy some smokin hot loads in a common calibre. The Martini action is WAY overbuilt and more than capable of handling modern cartridges.

Roger in Republic

My .44 mag Trapper carbine will raise a dust cloud in front of me from the standing position. The fireball at night is truly awe inspiring. The same round from my 5 &3/4 Smith gives an even more virulent blast.

AW1Ed

Good Gawd.
big bore

Atkron

All I see there, is my shoulder dislocating.

Graybeard

My old-and-damaged shoulder will never be put at risk of that monster.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Just think….The Redcoats who fired the Martini were MUCH smaller than todays soldiers. And some bitch about 7.62×51 recoil…..

OldSoldier54

Ahhhhhh … early howitzer?

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

The Martini-Henry was Queen Vicky’s WMD.

1AirCav69

And I thought my 45.70 was a crew served weapon.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

That made me grin from ear to ear! Are those made from the early OWS Berdan primed 24ga hulls or the Boxer primed Magtech ones?
I was lucky enough to inherit a bucket of vintage Kynoch smokeless load brass.
I use the Magtech stuff for my .577 Snider loads.
I find Martini recoil similar to midrange .45-70 loads in a Marlin 95 Guide.

Dinotanker

NOW THAT IS A ROUND!!!! 🙂

Where in hades do you get a Martini-Henry in the US??? I have only EVER seen one outside of museum captivity and that was in the used rack at a Bass Outfitters in Pennsylvania many moons ago.

I am telling you….WE NEED to bring back horse whipping a.h.’s like that along with tar and feathers and riding them out of town on a rail….thats THE ONLY THING that will stop these freaks of nature imho!

From a linked article saying the school has changed its policy:

Before tweaking the language in the high school’s student handbook, the policy said “any student who is reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose whether on or off school grounds,” would be subject to penalties including up to a one-year suspension.

It now omits any mention of possessing a weapon off school grounds and doesn’t mention a specific suspension length. It also includes a note on buses.

“Students are forbidden to carry any type of weapon or simulated weapon to school,” the revamped policy states. “Strict disciplinary action and legal actions will result if this occurs. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any imitation firearm in or upon any part of the building… without the written authorization of the governing officer of the institution, or while on any school bus is a disorderly person.”

The people who made the policy and tried to enforce it have to go.

They won’t, but they should.

There are often times one must wonder about the stupidity of supposed learned people.

UpNorth

The school board that hired the wanna-be fascists need to be voted out of office. Not that I believe that that could happen in Joisey.

Ex-PH2

Wow. There is nothing quite like being in a state where the the politicians are paranoid and delusional and encourage the rest of the population to be that way.

But…but…the school district is A-F-R-A-I-D!!!!

Those confounded guns might jump right out of the photo and DO something to somebody.

Does the hysterical state of New Jersey band movies with weapons of any/all kinds, too?

Dinotanker

Ex-PH2,

About the movies, they probably retroactively ban the weapons used in movies that flop.

Im pretty sure that any area that markets itself as a “Hollywood” friendly place to be has an institutionalized double standard, and they tell themselves that “the movie people are only using toy weapons…”

David

Largest concentration of permitted automatic weapons in CA is Hollywood, I read.

Funy how you can have a giant-sized sticker across the back window of your truck that says “Fuck Trump and Fuck You if you voted for him” and it is defended as free speech. Have a silhouette of a gun and yer outta here!! Those silly libs really are amusing, in a you-stepped-in-dogshit kind of way.

They consistently prove it is an incurable mental illness.

Grunt

What blows me away is the “off school grounds” policy.

At what point was it considered, debated, voted on, and approved, that the school administrators have the authority to regulate the conduct of students when they are not in school?

HMCS(FMF) ret

You would be surprised on the authority that your school district thinks they have on children off-campus. Just check out a few of their regulations (should be on-line at their website).

Remember, these are the same people that use PBIS (Google it) to discipline students in school… and wonder why kids are out of control during the school day.

Grunt

Tbh, if there was any semblance of parenting left in America, there would be no need of punishment at school.

Kid: Fuck you!
Teacher: Okay. *picks up phone*
Kid: Who you calling?
Teacher: Your parents, to let them know you’ll be late because you have a date with detention.
Kid: Can I just stay in detention? My dad’s going to beat my ass… * makes poopy face*

USMC Steve

It doesn’t matter if they debated or voted or anything else. The school has absolutely zero authority off school property. Sue the fuck out of them. Don’t even discuss it except in a court. Break them.

11B-Mailclerk

Do you realize that some court cases have -supported- their off-site authority?

A kid used to appear off-site with “bong hits for Jesus” signs, and got smacked. He apparently was near but not in some sort of school function, and they threw the “because we say so” flag.

SCOTUS -concurred-

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_v._Frederick

Note that he did not say “pot hits”. A Bong, technically, can be used for tobacco.

So the courts are a mess on this topic.

OldSoldier54

Tongue-in-cheek advocation of illegal activity seems pretty straight forward compared to this.

11B-Mailclerk

I would have called that kid’s antics open-and-shut protected speech. Mocking authority is way up there with the intended freedoms.

But the kid lost. And I think that is epically wrong.

Graybeard

Another bit of evidence to submit to support the claim that sending ones’ children to some public schools borders on child abuse.

Sue the living daylights out of the School District and each of the administrators collectively and individually. Repeat until they see the light and cease to infringe upon the constitutional rights of their students.

UpNorth

And there is this. In Connecticut(Dicky Blumenthal is so proud), teachers took their Kindergarten kids out for a stroll. The kids were encouraged to chant “we love school”, while the teachers carried signs with #Enough printed on them. When called on it, the school claimed it was a “safety drill”. https://hotair.com/archives/2018/03/18/kindergarten-gun-control-walkout-cmon-man/

Sparks

could be suspended for up to a year if they are “reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose on or off school grounds.”

Communist leftists love this kind of mindless, knee jerk, decision making.

Perry Gaskill

I’m not so sure Craig Wigley, the incoherent school superintendent, is acting in the interest of voters. Usually, the way things work is that Wigley would be hired under contract by an elected school board. Sometimes a superintendent with strong teacher support and a weak school board can get away with almost anything.

Suspending the students for what they do on social media is an overreach particularly since they weren’t engaged in an illegal activity. Wigley might have a better argument with the bumper sticker because it happened on school grounds, but the message of the sticker is fundamentally political. This means if Wigley wants to violate free speech on school grounds by banning pro-2nd Amendment stickers, he needs to at least ban all other stickers of a political cast. Including those for the faculty.

Somebody should be getting in the school board’s face to make them yank Wigley’s chain.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Banning Rights explicitly stated in the Constitution…..says it all.

If we had a ‘bill of rights'(hoserspeak for constitution) that mirrored yours, we would fight for it too.

SFC D

Send lawyers, guns and money. The shit has hit the fan.

AW1Ed

Wigley. The Stupid is strong with this one.

OWB

Don’t know but am willing to bet that these same school administrators do NOT punish students who engage in illegal activity off school grounds with the same vigor that they went after these kids who did nothing illegal, immoral, or remotely threatening to anyone at a time and place having nothing to do with their school/s. They probably don’t even call the police when someone inside their school does something illegal.

Do they suspend kids who do drugs in the school? Do they suspend kids who commit sexual assault in the school? Set fires? Or anything other than some arbitrary use of words which they define as hurtful or something?

HMCS(FMF) ret

See my comment about PBIS above – that’s what most schools use today to “punish” students

AW1Ed

And is the root cause of the recent Broward County school shooting.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Thankfully my sons will have the chance to take a Firearms Safety, Hunters and First Aid courses at their Northern Alberta high school(about 90 students).

Most of the students come from the local Reservation, so I have their parents to thank for these very practical courses that would not even be considered in the largely Libtard Southern Canada.
The kids today need to learn the practical skills that are largely lost on the current 20- something Millenials.

NEVER underestimate the stupidity and incompetence of Bureaucrats, especially in public education. Speaking of Publuc School idiots, has there been any more news about Gregory Salcido or are they just trying to shuffle it under the rug like chickenshit little rat turds?

Garold

Next schools will be kicking out 3rd graders for chewing poptarts into the shape of a gun.

11B-Mailclerk

I still think history will note that pop tart gun incident as the intersection of epic cowardice and epic stupidity.

2/17 Air Cav

It’s Joisey. That’s all I have, and that’s enough.

Ex-PH2

If some kid does something stupid such as posting an implied threat on social media, like those two geniuses did on Snapchat right after the Parkland shooting, in this county it is reported to the police, who do their job and investigate it. Never has there been an issue here with kids posting something like these kids did on social media, when they’re not in the school’s allotted space.

I do not think what this superintendent did was even remotely legal, as there was nothing, not even an implied threat. Therefore, the parents of those kids should haul his ass into court and make it cost him dearly.

I’ve noticed this a lot, in cases where schools come under scrutiny for this kind of stupidity.
In each and every case, it seems, the school is enforcing a school rule that extends it’s coverage into areas of the community, and the lives of it’s students, where it has no legal authority to do so.
School rules are only supposed to policies set out for behavior during school hours, on school property; very much as employers and employees have in the workplace.
These schools have been extending these policies in such a way as to make them LAWS. This is a violation of the constitution without any question, since it is not within their power to legislate law. And they most certainly cannot extend their rules into the homes of the students since doing so is extending that rule into the lives of the parents, or any other adult who might happen to reside there (as would be the case in rental property).

Docduracoat

It would be really fun if these kids were participating in the Olympics in one of the shooting sports
And the first thing the school district heard about it would be if they win a gold medal for the United States in for instance biathlon
Then they could be suspended for winning the United States a gold medal in the Olympics

OWB

Don’t think it can’t happen! Read of a college some years ago that eliminated their rifle team (or whatever it was called). Seems that several members of the team were reigning national champs, world medalists and Olympic hopefuls. One may have gone on to win a gold at the Olympics. (It’s been a while ago – forget which school. Maybe 15 years ago, give or take?)
