Vic Damone passes
A few years later, he was drafted into the Army where he served from 1951-1953, spending a year in Germany. According to a 1954 article in the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, even though he had two movies under his belt, he got no preferential treatment from the Army, claiming that he didn’t even sing for the first five months that he was in Germany;

“Vic Damoneee!”
Wasn’t that one of George Bush’s favorite exclamations? Not sure which Bush.
Rest in peace brother.
I see that the old news article carries something interesting. Damone was given shit (“a slurring remark about men in show business”) that probably called into question Damone’s sexual preference. No complaint was filed, as would be expected today. Instead, Damone landed one that dropped the guy.
RIP Mr. Damone.
They settled in the gym! Damn what a concept! That or behind the barracks and you end with a hand shake and go your way, friends or enemies, but you still supported one another.
No whining, bullshit human resources offices or stress cards or any of the other Nancy ass shit we see today that does nothing but impede and hinder the services.
Crazy, right? Makes me wish for a simpler time. Nowadays fighting is a surefire way to end your career prematurely.
After completing pugilstick combatives in BCT, the equipment was laid out in our bay at night. Some in the platoon grabbed the gloves and had a silly little boxing match to air their grievances with each other in the laundry room. Nobody was hurt and they were being smart about not hurting each other (too much). Well, someone snitched to the drill sergeants, which caused the combatants to lose their family day leave, get extra duty, and the whole group to lose honor platoon designation, along with everyone in the company getting a lecture about why fighting is wrong, blablabla…
They were lucky to be in IET status – active army would have slapped them with far harsher punishments.
Cripes. I had a fight in BCT that was a doozy. It was schedule, took place outside the barracks but in full view of the world–including, you can bet, the drill sergeants, watching from behind the blinds.
We used to have ‘Smoker’ matches on the ships…good way to settle differences.
Then Clinton came into office, and just like that they disappeared.
Wait…….what? Fighting is wrong? Then why do countries have military forces, and why do citizens join the military?
May God Bless you good Sir! Rest in Peace, prayers to you and your family!
He had a great voice.
Rest in Peace, Vic.
