Melvin Douglas; needless embellishment
Our partners at Military Phonies send us their work on this fellow Melvin Curry Douglas who claims to be 20-year-veteran of the US Marine Corps as well as a combat veteran of Beirut, Grenada, Honduras, Panama, Desert Storm and Kosovo. He also claims to have left the Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7).
He was a drill instructor, briefly, in 1994;
According to his records, Douglas left the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in 1994, eight before the 20-year mark that he claims. He did serve in the Gulf War and he served aboard the USS Guam in the Adriatic Sea while that ship was supporting Operation Provide Promise in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From Military Phonies, a summary;
What is clear is that his records do not support his claim of being in Grenada or Beirut. He was with BLT 1/6 at the time and they did not participate in either. The 31st MAU was offshore of Beirut briefly and had 3/3 on board, but they left the area when needed elsewhere. Douglas was with 3rd MARDIV (Okinawa) at the time so conceivably could have been a member of BLT 3/3. If he was and the ship was off shore, then he would be a Beirut veteran.
On page 9 of the FOIA results, it shows that Douglas was awarded a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (SSDR) on 19 Nov 1983. He was with 3rd MARDIV at the time so this award could not be related to BLT 1/8. BLT 1/8 members received a SSDR for ending their mission to Beirut around this same date.
Douglas claims he was with BLT 1/8, but he joined 1/8 much later in June 1984. BLT 1/8 and BLT 3/3 were not part of the Grenada invasion on 25 Oct 1983, so by claiming he was in Grenada it undermines his Beirut claim since his records do not support that.
We suspect that the claim of being in six combat zones were a result of ships that he deployed on perhaps entered the territorial waters of regional skirmishes. Due to the billets that he held at the time (i.e. Marine Detachment on USS Missouri, etc.), Douglas would not be in a position to go ashore and participate in ground operations.
This is parsing words – having “six combat zones under your belt” and being in combat are two different things but it is implied they are one and the same. He did state his claim emphatically when he spoke of “my days as a killer on the battlefields of Panama, Grenada, Honduras, Beirut, Kosovo, and The Gulf War“, so there is little room for doubt about what Douglas was claiming.
To wrap this up – Douglas’ military records do not support a claim of him being in combat in Grenada or Beirut. This casts some doubt that he was a Beirut veteran but the possibility exists that his ship was in territorial waters briefly, which would qualify. The fact remains that he was not a combat veteran of either Beirut or Grenada, according to his records.

‘Shack’ is what a Forward Air Controller/JTAC will often say over the radio when ordnance delivered by an aircraft (i.e. during a Close Air Support mission) impacts the intended target center mass. Example: ‘Buzzard 57, you shacked the target.’
A ‘shack’ call lets the pilot know that his ordnance was precisely on target.

He also was a Marksmanship Training Instructor for recruits at Edson Range on the west coast.
Something definitely took a turn for the worse when he went to DI duty. He finished school, then after one Platoon he was assigned as the Bn Building and Grounds NCO for about a week then sent to the hospital for about 2-3 weeks. It looks like he was returned to duty as Blg and Grounds NCO and never pushed or handled recruits again. Those 6 or 7 Months was probably him awaiting the findings of the medical board.
There is no telling if it was a physical or mental issue.
He did have a good career up to that point, but then again he probably just was able to hide his racist beliefs and played his cards right to keep getting promotions and assignments.

Looking at his records He picked up Staff Sergeant in early 1992, as evidenced by the change in primary duty (CHIPRDU) entry and mos from 0311 ( rifleman) to 0369 (Small Unit Infantry Leader).
That’s a good time, actually about average or a little faster to pick up SSGT.
He had about two years in grade when he was sent to medical and they began to process him for discharge.
He would be considered non-selectable for GySgt because of that, Plus it typically takes about 4 years in Grade to be eligible.

He was placed on TDRL (Temp Duty Retired List) when he left in 94.
“A service member is placed on TDRL only if his condition is not stable, he has Total Combined Military Disability Rating of 30% or higher, and there is a chance that he could improve enough to return to full duty or seriously worsen within the next five years.”
So did he get better and choose to retire or did they just officially retire him at 20?
“When on TDRL, it is as though the service member is medically retired from the military. He does not perform any military duties, is given a temporary Military Disability Rating of at least 50%, and receives full Military Disability Benefits from the DoD and the VA.
During the TDRL period, the service member must be occasionally re-evaluated (generally every 18 months) to determine the progress of his condition and his disability ratings updated to reflect any changes in his condition.
If the condition improves enough during his time on TDRL, the PEB may find the condition no longer unfitting. In that case, the service member can choose to either return to full active duty or permanently retire from the military. There’s no indication in the FOIA that he performed any military duty after 1994. So if he was initially placed on the TDRL, at some point his retirement was made permanent. The most likely scenario was that at the first re-evaluation, his condition was deemed to be stable enough that he could be permanently retired.
He was certainly not/is fit for the military. I suspect he milked it for years until he met his “eligibility” requirements.
He stated he was “medically retired” due to PTSD. Check out the comment he made on the YouTube video. Which means he only served 12 yrs on active duty.. Don’t see anything stating he made it to 20 yrs.

I am reserving judgement on this guy. He earned a CAR and a NAM with V, which aren’t easy to get. In Iraq I supported Marines who took fire from the enemy, did hooha hooha stuff in response and weren’t awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and while they recieved NAMs, JSCMs and Commendation Medals they all lacked the V device.
So he did something, somewhere…or he got someone to fudge his awards.

I suspect there are records missing and as a result we dont have the full story there.
As for him as an individual: He is a racist asshole. And rather proud of it.
I completely understand. I really do want to respect and honor the service of others no matter what else they have done with their lives. Becoming a criminal after military service, for instance, makes it difficult to respect the earlier actions of a veteran, but it can be done.
The problem with guys like this is that their actions today tend to make us wonder just how honorable their service really was.

yeah, hashmarks are still 4 years for USN/USMC, but GCMs have been every 3 years for the USMC for a long time and while the GCM for Navy used to be every 4 years, they also changed it (while I was active duty) to every 3 many years ago.
I bought those pretty gold hashmarks (Earned six of them)but being a diehard Marine Reg HM, I never did sew them onto my Navy uniform since I never wore it anyway. 🙂

I found it interesting that Melvin Douglas seems more concerned with the title of Drill Instructor attached to his name than with the responsibility that it brings. He should be more concerned with setting an example for all of the Marines that he trained, and these hate-filled rants would be disappointing for some of them to read.
