Charles Robert Jenkins, deserter passes at 77
Reuters reports that Charles Robert Jenkins who deserted from his US Army post in South Korea to the North in 1965 has passed at the age of 77;
He drank 10 beers, took his men on patrol and told them to wait while he checked the road below. He then walked towards North Korea, holding a rifle with a white t-shirt tied around it. He said he had planned to go to Russia and turn himself in, and had not expected North Korea to keep him.
While in North Korea, where he taught English to soldiers and portrayed an evil U.S. spy in a propaganda film, Jenkins met and married Hitomi Soga, a Japanese woman 20 years his junior who had been kidnapped by North Korea to help train spies.
Unlike Bergdahl, Jenkins actually spent time in jail for his walkabout after he returned to the real world in 2004. He died in his wife’s hometown in Japan.

Out of respect for his wife, who was a victim of the Norks, I will not say what I was going to (you have no idea how fucking hard that is).
I pity his wife who was kidnapped by the Norks, but as for him I have no feelings, sympathy or pity.
Mr. Jenkins may rot. His wife has my sympathies. I think she was only one of many such abductees.

Was their marriage really consensual, or was she just a bone the Norks threw at the collaborator? Seeing as how it’s North Korea and she was not a willing defector like him, but rather a hostage taken by force, you have to question whether that marriage should be taken at face value.
the marriage was forced, as I read in a different article, they did “eventually come to love each other” and apparently had two girls, Miko and Blinda who also got free of the norks and live in their Mom’s home town of Sado.

Tried to read the story of his life…lost interest after about the umpteenth time he f****d something up.
This guy was given 30 days in the brig at the naval base in Yokosuka and he didn’t complete that sentence. His wife was kidnapped walking home from school and “given” to Jenkins. They had two daughters who now live in Japan. Feel sorry for his wife, feel sorry for his kids and feel sorry for his wife’s family, but never him. This POS deserted because he didn’t want to go to Viet of the Nam. I hope he is turning on a spit in hell.

The two deserters marriages also exposed the racial bigotry of the NORKs. They would not let them marry a Korean Woman, and went as far as kidnapping wives ( Dresnok’s wife was Romanian) from other countries.
