Command Master Chief Richard W. Penny canned

| October 27, 2017

Bobo sends us a link to the Navy Times which reports that Command Master Chief Richard Penny, the command master chief of the Camp Pendleton-based Assault Craft Unit 5, was fired last week. I guess the Navy takes it’s golf courses seriously;

The investigation centered around allegations that sailors who were already in the chiefs mess — known as “genuine chief petty officers” —and who were leading the initiation season activities damaged a golf course‘s greens by spraying the grounds with silly string and filling the holes with shaving cream, a senior Navy source familiar with the matter told Navy Times.

The hijinks may have killed some of the grass, so the golf course manager reported the incident to the Navy command, according to the Navy source familiar with the incident who spoke to Navy Times on condition of anonymity.

Penny was present briefly at the start of the event but was not there when the alleged misconduct occurred, according to Lt. Laura Price, a spokesperson for Expeditionary Strike Group 3, the command conducting the investigations.

From what I’ve read the damages were considerably more than silly string and shaving cream.

NHSparky

And also the Chiefs were abusive towards the golf course staff.

No sympathy if in fact that was the case.

David

Translation: “Some senior Marines whined about their golf course”… This is one of those things that should go to a Mattis-type leader who would say “I want a bunch of Navy Chief ass on my course cleaning this childish shit up NOW” and two hours later it would be forgotten. Sorry, I don’t see this as career-wrecking worthy.

USMC Steve

Nope, don’t see anything remotely like that anywhere. Interesting and incorrect assumption on your part. The ones who did the destruction should have been charged with destruction of government property though. Some of us expect more adult behavior from E-6 and above.

Jonp

Sounds kinda silly to end a career over something this silly.
See what i did there.
I agree with Davids assesment. Clean that crap up with a toothbrush and dont do it again

desert

I agee!!

Ex-PH2

Yes, the Navy does take its golf courses and programs seriously. The Navy takes that just as seriously as those known as “genuine chief petty officers”, not fakes who write their names on certificates that they stole.

I still love watching that flick, Kelsey Grammer did a knock-down-bang-up job in it!

Claw

Nice haircut for the official photo.

The photo shoot must have been a last minute notice kind of a thing.

ChipNASA

Come on now Claw, He’s just trying to git down with his homies…it’s known as a CPO High Top Fade.
*snerk*

Ex-PH2

He parts it in the middle. What is he, a monk? And that’s WAAAAAyy too much Brylcreem!

Claw

Yeah, I can hear the story right now.

“Hey, Storekeeper. Drag out the Barber’s Kit. We’ve got a half dozen E-1/E-2’s and an E-9 who were end of the month No Pay Dues and they need a freebie.”

Atkron

He looks smarmy…

IDC SARC

Nice watch.

Bobo

Don’t you have yours? I thought that they were standard issue to all the SOCOM guys.

IDC SARC

Never been issued a Rolex

Citizens and Suuntos….Oakley glasses…no Rolex 🙁

NHSparky

Best use of an SRB check evah.

And yeah, I know a few guys who reenlisted and spent the money on a Rolex Submariner.

Crazy or crazy smart, I still can’t figure out which.

mr. sharkman

Suunto makes some really nice gear…

Mason

And here I thought that my USAF was the sole service concerned with proper golf course construction and maintenance.

CB Senior

Never ever hold any of the season’s evolutions near anything that is public and you do not control.
Bad look, Bad Ju-Ju.
Not directing the Mess to engage in smart behavior was what go him smoked.

Wow… I remember “training” sessions being behind closed doors and the Golf outing being done with no grab ass in public.

As for the E-9, he should have been there to supervise the entire evolution – that’s his/her responsibility.

Ex-PH2

I’m just waiting for our very own Master Chief to check in on this. He may be banging his head on the wall over it, though.

FatCircles0311

Their mistake was writing O’Doyle rules….

Club Manager

What follows comes from being responsible for several military golf courses back in the day. Apologies up front Chaplin.

I hate fucking golfers especially the O-5 and E-9 types. I hate fucking golf course managers who think they are WWI (i.e. water walkers first class). All this prick had to do was call the Command Chief and everything would have been squared away. While I’m at it, I hate fucking commanders who overreact.

Daisy Cutter

With his doo, he was going for the Alec Baldwin look alike.

Atkron

This is the kind of stuff that happens when you screw up a senior officer’s favorite golf course…should have went to the municipal course guys.

Perry Gaskill

Pendleton’s famous greenskeeper…

1610desig

I’d like to know the rest of the story….perhaps more damage done or other initiation process fouls…anyway, must have been bad as I don’t see any way he got canned without Force and MCPON in general concurrence…I’m not sure I would blame the CO for overreacting….ultimately it was his Chiefs Mess and his responsibility…

HMCS(FMF) ret

Check the link on my post above 1610desig… looks like there are multiple investigations going on concerning the actions of the E-9 and the mess. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other incidents that happened that someone failed to report/cover up that are biting them in the ass right now.

timactual

Silly string and shaving cream? And they expect junior sailors to take them seriously? Who do the officers rely on now for adult supervision?

Yef

Wow. That dude is smiling in that picture.

In the Army, only officers smile in their pictures.

Bill Bennett

Good lord! Relieve a SMC for killing a little grass and spraying shaving cream in golf course holes. Shitcan 30 years of experience because of a lark.

No wonder the Navy can’t keep ships apart. Emphasis on the wrong things. Chief’s initiation is a foundation gharmet for these guys. Lets get real and fire folks for screwing up, not having fun with traditions.

Senior leadership are a bunch of —holes. This kinda shit proves it.

OldSoldier54

“No wonder the Navy can’t keep ships apart. Emphasis on the wrong things.”

So it seems. Alas …

prusmc

Why were the skipper, ExO and leading MCPO of the Fitzgerald uncerimoniously relieved and had career ending actions taken over their lack of action, while the same counterparts in the McCain fatality are allowed to skate? Is this Affirmative Action Naval Justice or is it “White Privilage?

1610desig

Sorry, but I’m going to jest with you a bit…maybe Trump had you in mind concerning our national opiate crisis?

A Proud Infidel®™

WTF, is there a new Commandment saying “THOU SHALT NOT fuck with Shaft (*OOPS!*, Staff) Officers’ playgrounds”?

mr. sharkman

Am I the only one thinking that in this current era of Obama-ish taint remaining Big Dumb Mabus Navy that his biggest mistake was not being a black female trangender who self-identified as a furry? 😉

A Proud Infidel®™

Maybe his career would have been intact if he suddenly self-identified as a member of “Crossdressers Unanimous”?

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Penny canned-Does this make any cents?

Frank

Why does the US taxpayer have to pay for golf courses from the defense budget?
Surely the money would be better spent on basic watchkeeping training.
The S/he/it who decided to wash this bit of dirty laundry in public opened a lot of eyes to DoD spending

1610desig

You make a good point…I’m wondering though if MWR funds cover much if not most of golf course operations rather than appropriated funds….I had a particularly personal hard on that MWR funds covered much of the Navy’s gym and related equipment costs yet physical fitness presumably honed by such was mandated by the Navy…as for DoD golf courses, in my view, they can either support their own costs or go the way golf is going in the rest of the United States…oblivion. Maybe there’s been a recent resurgence in golf and I’m mistaken though
