FOX News has ousted Bill O’Reilly, the smug, smur-king of evening talk-TV for more than a decade for issues relating to sexual harassment of female employees. The rumors had floated about for years that the supercilious O’Reilly was as big a jerk behind the scenes as he all too frequently was while on camera, allegedly hitting on female employees for sexual favors for much of the time he was a FOX ratings king. The pushy, public persona presented on television made such rumors difficult to disbelieve, leading Ol’ Poe to believe that this day of reckoning was simply a matter of time: another arrogant fool brought to an ignominious fate by thinking with his little head rather than the oversized one O’Reilly possesses. Somehow, to this age- seasoned Scots-Irishman, the term “Big Dumb Mick,” seems to fit quite well here.
Big Bill has his viewers, assuredly, me being one of ‘em sometimes, but it was always a challenge to get through an entire show without having to be constrained from throwing a drink glass at the tube when the overbearing Son of Hibernia haughtily talked over some guest expert, informing them that they didn’t know what they were talking about within their own field of expertise because he, O’Reilly, knew better; or to stay in the room when he began another shameless shilling session of his popular but poorly-written books. There’s not another Irishmen alive that Ol’ Poe has called a sorry ass son of a bitch more times than Bill O’Reilly.
O’Reilly’s demise is a victory for the libs who threatened his advertisers with boycotts when talk of his sexual harassment activities began to become more publicly discussed. They have unseated the king, no question. But it’s going to be a Pyrrhic victory for them because FOX has already announced that O’Reilly’s replacement is the far more likable and far better informed talk show host, Tucker Carlson. While O’Reilly treated both friendly and hostile guests with contempt, Carlson saves his devastating verbal flayings for those cocky liberals who try to treat him and all conservatism with contempt. Carlson’s far more politically intuitive as well as being far more entertaining.
But in spite of all that, you know, I’m really going to….

The last time I watched even a minute of O’Reilly was several years ago. That was probably the third, maybe fourth, time I ever watched some part of his show. The guy turned my stomach. Phuk ’em. I don’t know what he did but it would seem no unwanted toucjing was involved or criminal charges would have resulted. It was all about the money, I guess, but I’m not up on the situation–nor do I care to be.
The best part of O’Reilly’s show was when Dennis Miller was on, even then O’R couldn’t keep from interrupting!
Toucjing is nearly the same as touching. I kinda like it. I think I’ll keep it, maybe hyphenated: touch-jing.
No great loss in my opinion.
I’ve seen the defenders of this boorish thug elsewhere, why people want to defend this behavior is incomprehensible to me. I was taught as a child to respect women, it’s never occurred to me that I had any right to play grab ass with a woman who was not my girlfriend or wife.

Bill O’Reilly once made fun of Bill Moyers by stating he’d missed seeing Mr. Moyers in the war zones of the Falkands conflict, which is understandable since Mr. O’Reilly was never in the war zones of the Falklands conflict either. Mr. O’Reilly shares more with Mr. Brian WIlliams than a profession. They share the same casual relationship with the truth, two stolen valor assholes claiming that which they did not do.

The implication is that O’Reilly was on the Falklands Islands, but O’Reilly want’s to parse the statement to mean all of Argentia was the war zone…sort of like Brian WIlliams seeing bullet holes and thinking that he’d been in combat.

The rumor is Fox gave him a $25M severance, roughly equal to one years salary on his current contract, safe to assume there probably is a non-compete as part of that arrangement. My guess, since he now has time and no other brand to concern himself with, is he will play a much higher stakes legal game with his accusers.

As a male nurse I worked with tons of women over the years.
I learned early on that you cannot enter a med room with one single woman and let the door close. I always kept it open and took other people with me when I needed to do a treatment on any female patient no matter who or what they were.
I was accused numerous times of sexual harassment and none of them stuck as I only ever did it to CNA’s or other nurses that weren’t doing their jobs.
Nothing stuck to me, although there were a couple of fairly close calls including a woman that was showing off her new tattoo on her lower back and I called it exactly what it was, a tramp stamp…
With all of the shit surrounding O’Reilly and his behavior over the last few years, I was wondering when he’d be shown the door or get the shit knocked out of him for making an inappropriate comment around a woman. I’m glad to see him gone… but he’ll show up somewhere in a few years, like a turn in a punchbowl.

I rarely watch Fox News except when traveling and stuck in a hotel, and even then I’ll watch a rerun of Fast ‘n Loud before I would him. I think it says something that “he makes lots of money for his company” outweighs the fact that he was such an asshole that the company had to pay out $13 million to various women over the years as a cost of doing business – and essentially ignored it. Says poor things about him, Fox, AND society.
Oh, and it is worth noting that this wasn’t “he made a pass which was rejected and now she is whining” – this is more like “he made passes, and when rejected, he got people fired and ruined their careers.” Maybe it’s because I have three daughters… but I think he shouldn’t be fired, he should be kneecapped. And sterilized.

It’s interesting that O’Reilly getting canned seems to be part of a larger sea change at Fox News. Underneath the noise from Our Sisters of Perpetual Victimhood popping champagne corks, there’s also the sound of knives being sharpened, and the question of who’s next.
Which, when you think about it, is strange considering Fox News was started by Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes with the simple idea that ratings are better when the news is read by a hot blonde with big bumpers than by some pencil-necked dork with a j-school degree. News as entertainment; the anchor as celebrity.
Flash forward 20 years, and all those ladies who might have found alternate employment as pole dancers are now apparently pissed because they think Fox News management doesn’t consider them direct descendants of Edward R. Murrow.
Perry, you are correct but only partially so; Rupert and Roger did indeed base their visual business plan on Mexican weather reporting but what dragged in most viewers like the conservative types here at TAH was their decision to set themselves apart from the Nets by taking a center-right political stance. That, more than any other factor, is what made them a huge success. The babes were just lagniappe and to Aile’s credit, he hired some damned smart, fine-looking women.
There are a lot of moving parts to this, Poe. It would probably take a book-length manuscript to describe all of them. For example, it’s not a surprise Fox News tilts to the conservative considering that Ailes was a key media strategist in the Nixon campaign in ’68.
It might also be pointed out that while it’s true Ailes hired some damned smart fine-looking women, you can also ask this question: Did Ailes ever put a damned smart butt-ugly woman in front of a camera? Pick your priority. Part of the problem too with hiring hotties is that they become celebrities, and it’s very difficult for a celebrity to work on a story and avoid becoming part of it.
Still another interesting question is why this stuff is happening now? Part of it probably has been building over a period of years, and the recent Clinton campaign acted as a catalyst. There’s also apparently a power struggle going on at the C-suite level among Rupert and his sons which is part of a transition due to Murdoch getting older.
Does that mean Fox News is going to be less conservative in the future? Beats me.
Getting the news read by good looking babes with nice builds is an accepted business model…when was the last time you saw a truly butt-ugly female newsreader on ANY network? Humans being human, they tend to empathize more with attractive people than unattractive ones. That being said – trying (or succeeding) in ruining someone’s career because they wouldn’t blow you is unacceptable behavior anywhere. Or should be. Try to get laid? Human nature, even if sometimes inappropriate. Trying to ruin someone because they turn you down? Whole different thing.

Men who constantly hit on women have always been a source of irritation to me. There are a lot of this type in the traveling business community. I used to have a fellow who worked for me, managing our military accounts in the Southeast U.S. A very bright and unusually fast-talking southerner he was a Navy Reserve LCDR in an intel unit. The guy was physically unimpressive, short and not particularly attractive but he was very self-assured with women and hit on every attractive woman with whom he came into contact.
One day after a waitress had politely but firmly rebuffed his rather crude attempt to meet him later, I asked him why he persisted in such boorish behavior. He looked straight at me and said, “Boss, it’s a game of numbers; if I try every one of ’em, occasionally I’m gonna find one who just happens to be receptive at that particular time and I’m gonna get laid.” He winked at me and put it into our language, “If you always ask for an order, you’re gonna get more sales, right?”
So, there is a logical rationale behind such male behavior but I still find it a source of irritation, particularly if there is an element of coercion to it.
A good friend of mine used to use the line “Care to fuck, or should I apologize?” on girls at bars and other social gathering places, utilizing the same rationale. And when the female he approached preferred Option-B, he politely apologized. He also had a very clear sense of what did and didn’t constitute proper time & place. At work, he kept it firmly zipped.
Down side is, he is just the type that gets the rest of us added mandatory briefings – as if there weren’t enough already 🙁 .
Good riddance. Now if they get rid of Hannity I might start watching Fox again.
