Iranian fast boat bullies Navy auxiliary ship
Someone needs to remind the Iranians of Operation Praying Mantis. During that engagement, the U.S. Navy smacked the Iranian Navy around so hard, and did a lot of damage to them, that they were “feeling the pain” and embarrassment for a long time.
When I was in the Navy, and my ship deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Iranians didn’t want to come out to play with us. But again, the Persian Gulf was rapidly becoming a US/Allied pond and they would’ve ended up with the “wrong” kind of public coverage.
However, enter a non-combatant ship and the Iranians all of a sudden want to get brave. As with the period leading up to Operation Praying Mantis, the Iranians don’t appear to be able to make a solid connection between having a real leader in Washington DC, a military that normally doesn’t take those kind of games with the right leadership in Washington DC, and the butt kicking that’s given to the one that plays with fire the way the Iranians like to play with fire.
Or, they could utilize a “substitute” and simply rest their fast boats in front of a US ship, knowing full well that the maritime rules of the road would require the ship to turn to avoid collision. Once the ship turns, to abide by the maritime rules of the road, the Iranians could brag about “forcing” a U.S. ship to move. I guess the real world is different from a movie

A Navy official says a U.S. ship was forced to change course and move out of the way of Iranian fast boats while moving through the Strait of Hormuz during the weekend, in what has become a frequent occurrence there.

The Iranians are going to continue to do whatever they can to provoke a response from the USNavy in that area. Unless they actually threaten shipping from Kuwait, what is there that the US should do besides moon them? (Although not reported in this specific article, USMC Force Recon and USMC Aviation assets assigned to 24th MAU(SOC) based aboard USS GUADALCANAL (LPH-7) also directly supported this action during the morning of 22 September 1987.)

‘The Iran Ajr, formerly known as the Arya Rakhsh, was a Japanese-built amphibious landing ship used by Iran to lay naval mines during the Iran-Iraq War. The 614-ton, 54-meter ship was the focus of one of the most dramatic moments of Operation Prime Chance, which was the secret portion of Operation Earnest Will, which was the mission to protect U.S.-flagged petroleum-carrying ships in the Persian Gulf.
On 21 September 1987, U.S. forces tracked the ship as it left Iranian waters. Army helicopters were dispatched from their secret perch aboard the Navy guided missile frigate Jarrett (FFG 33) to shadow it. When the aviators reported that people aboard the Iran Ajr were laying mines, the U.S. commander in the Persian Gulf ordered the Army pilots to “stop the mining.” The helicopters fired on the ship, killing some of the mariners and chasing others into the water. Navy SEAL commandos later boarded the ship, confirmed the presence of mines, and detained the surviving Iranians.
On 26 September, the SEALs scuttled the ship in international waters. The detainees were later transferred “in the dead of night” to an Iranian C-130 airlifter at an Omani airfield, according to a 22 July 1992 article in Newsweek.
When the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) struck a mine the following April, Navy explosive ordnance specialists matched the serial numbers of nearby unexploded mines to the ones aboard the Iran Ajr. This evidence of Iranian involvement in the Roberts mining led to the biggest surface-warfare battle since World War II, the retribution campaign of 18 April 1988 called Operation Praying Mantis.’

Operation Praying Mantis…that brings back some memories. I was board the USS Enterprise attached to VA95 in what the largest naval battle since WWII.

In 1996, a ship in my Enterprise Battle Group, The USS Gettysburg was rammed by an Iranian Gunboat…we never did shit about it…Clinton was POTUS, and we all know the only balls he had were busy slapping intern chins.
