A student activist group at the University of Michigan is demanding campus officials provide them with “a permanent designated space on central campus for Black students and students of color to organize and do social justice work.”
Uh-huh.
The clamor for a segregated space for students of color to organize social justice efforts comes even as the public university builds a $10 million center for black students in the center of campus.
$10,000,000 in Public funds to promote segregation in a Public Institution.
In their demands, students explain why the new black student center is not enough, “because we want a space solely dedicated to community organizing and social justice work specifically for people of color.”
Hmmm.
This list of demands also call for more support for “marginalized” students “when oppressive attacks occur,” increasing the affirmative action of “Black, Arab, and other PoC” in tenured faculty, more readily alerting students on campus of “bias incidents,” and offering more financial aid for those of lower socioeconomic status.
Interesting.
“Our president has blatantly ignored us and it is time for us to speak up. We have been told that our demands are ‘rude,’” the group states on Facebook in announcing its petition. “We are calling on someone to care about students’ concerns and to lead us with integrity and help us fight against the oppression and hateful acts that try to destroy us and our community.”
Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, upheld the ban on affirmative action for public institutions. Perhaps the snowflakes should spend more time in the classroom and less time organizing and doing social work on the tax payers dime.

I seem to recall a little thing called Brown v Board of Education that held racial segregation to be unconstitutional and, you know, racist. Civil rights activists at the time (back when they actually cared about civil rights) called it a major victory.
And here we are, having come full circle. Certain black kids with heads full of SJW chickenshit are demanding a racially-segregated facility be created. For all his faults, Martin Luther King would puke if he saw this.
My high school in Chickasha, Oklahoma, quietly and without incident, integrated in 1957, my sophomore year. We were several years ahead of much of the state including our major cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Oklahoma wasn’t exactly Deep South, but it was definitely the South, with the eastern part of the state being referred to as Little Dixie. My first memory of those black students is how they self-segregated outside of class and gym and off the football field. They made no effort to associate with the white students and any efforts by any of those white students to do so were quickly rebuffed. That was essentially the situation as well at Norman High School where I graduated. When I enlisted in the Army in 1959, I found that a similar situation existed, the units were fully integrated for living and training purposes and the NCO’s would not allow the black troops to segregate themselves in one section of the platoon bay. However, the moment the work day or work week ended, the black soldiers essentially disappeared. At Fort Campbell in those days there were two main NCO Clubs, one for whites and Hispanics, the other for blacks. As a PFC MP I was in the black NCO Club frequently, called in to quell the frequent fights that broke out. We MP’s were always the only whites in that huge room that was jammed with black men and women who were mostly drunk or stoned. Taking one or more of them into custody was a risky business indeed. It was not a call we liked to respond to when on post patrol. But it was yet another example of black self-segregation that I was to see throughout my six years of active duty. In 1994 I saw the same thing in Basic Training. We trained together, but when the training day was over, all the black guys were off on their own. Coming from Hawaii I went over there a few times to try to meet everyone and didn’t necessarily get told to leave, but it wasn’t like I was welcomed. I didn’t understand it then because I didn’t have that issue growing up.
Though I would also say that when I became an instructor, all of us instructors hung out together regardless of black, white, etc.
A similar situation happens in prisons. Regardless of your background, upbringing, etc., you go hang with the group your skin color matches, white, hispanic, black, asian, etc. and that’s how it is whether you agree or not.

On the other hand, Poetrooper’s sociology theory–the “self-segregation tendency of blacks…”–does not address some important questions:
* Given the tendency of white students or white prisoners, etc. to congregate together, why do you not discuss the “self-segregation tendency of whites”? (Same could be asked about a “self-segregation tendency of Latinos”)
* Why do you believe this “self-segregation tendency of blacks” exists? You seem to view it unfavorably, but you do not discuss possible causes for this tendency?
* Does this “self-segregation tendency of blacks” occur in all environments and contexts, e.g., among jazz musicians? Among athletes? Among fans of rap music? Among co-workers at all types of workplaces?
* Does the “self-segregation tendency of blacks” apply equally to black men and black women? How about gay black men and lesbian black women? Religious vs. non-religious black people?

I served in the 509th PIR in Germany in the late 60’s. The rifle companies in both battalions were about 40% black. In my company all the platoon sargeants were black. I observed the same tendency of black EM to self-segregate, even though there was no evidence of any racial discrimination within the unit. Also, the black NCO’s were some of the finest professional soldiers I ever served with.

I am not sure why seeking an understanding of this tendency is “pernicious”. I was thinking that perhaps it would help if I, as a white man, better understood why black people might want to separate themselves. But I could’ve stated that more clearly.
Mark, how exactly would it “help” if you understood why anybody does anything? No matter how clearly (or otherwise) you stated your question, the question remains a non-sequitir. What possible difference can you make if people of one particular ethnic group (NOT a race, because we are all the same race – Homo sapiens sapiens) wish to gather together? There are many reasons why it is helpful to understand the causes of human behavior.
But I will offer you just one example.
Many African-American men have told me (and others) that ‘sticking together’ has been a survival mechanism for centuries in the United States.

But you might want to talk with them first and make sure you fully understand their perspective.

The theory has been substantiated in various areas, but most notably in economic research to understand purchase or investment behaviors.

Most ‘people of color’ also have a race. White is ONLY a color, and most Americans of European stock are identified as white or Caucasian. So, technically, they aren’t engaging in racism. Which makes me wonder if we will all eventually have to declare a ‘race’ so those of us who are ‘color-challenged’ won’t be discriminated against?

1. I would tear up the list in front of their eyes.
2. I would say, “There is a recognized procedure to present requests from student groups to the administration. Use it. And remember, you don’t get to ‘demand’ a damn thing here.”
3. Then I would add, “Anyone who is still in this office thirty seconds after I finish this sentence will be expelled from this university immediately, with no refund of tuition costs.”
4. I’d start the timer.

Well yes they do think that, and our government has helped that perception. By failing to properly punish felony assault and murder we’ve allowed the government to “correct” the problem by introducing hate crimes…creating special victim classes because of the failings of proper prosecution previously.
Once the government decides some are more worthy victims than others you’ve created a legal precedent that allows some animals to be more equal than others…and those more equal animals don’t much care for being treated the same as the “lesser” animals.
Once again proving be careful how you vote because it matters, not just for president but for state and local elections even more.
Problem is, there are those who mistakenly think justice is getting the result they want.
My late uncle’s girlfriend (a black attorney, btw) explained, justice is a process, not a result. Just because you didn’t get what you wanted, you still were allowed to go through the ssystem on a (hopefully) level playing field.
Equal isn’t enough for some people. They feel that they should be given special advantage because one of their ancestors God knows how many generations ago was denied equal rights. Sorry, not gonna happen.

I say give them what they want. Convert an old campus building into the white free center. Give them a few hundred dollars to clean it up, stock it with surplus furniture and let them self fund things like lights and heat.
Once they occupy the building, immediately institute a new set of rules for People of Color students.
1. They must be indoors after sundown.
2. When entering any campus building other than the free space, they must enter by the back door.
3. The last two rows of seats in lecture halls are reserved for POC students.
4. Once those seats have been filled POC students are forbidden from occupying any seats other than the POC reserved seats.
5. POC students will eat in a reserved area of the dining hall. That space will be just inside the back door, next to the refuge containers.
6. POC will not participate in student government or be allowed to vote in campus elections.
7. Any violations of these rules will result in summary expulsion without recourse to appeal.
If they want to go back the time of segregation they should have to go all the way back.
Each of these rules come directly from the Jim Crow laws that ruled black people’s lives before the Civil rights acts of 1965-66.
These idiots are too young to remember how it was under Jim Crow, but I remember.
I remember my Grandmother telling me about some of them, POC were only allowed to eat outside at the local Ice Cream Parlor and only allowed to sit in the balcony at the local theater. I grew up in a racially mixed town in the seventies knowing some of the people that DID have to live under that and I’m sure they’d look at today’s college snowflakes and ask something like “WTF are you thinking, punks?”.
I believe I’ve mentioned my brother-in-law’s Grandma on here before. She’s practically my adoptive/surrogate Grandma, I call her “Grandma,” I love her like my own grandmother*, and she’s black, and a retired inner-city schoolteacher. She’s a pretty good teacher, too, as she still gives my nephew, nieces, and my kids studies and assignments to complete, since she doesn’t trust the modern curriculum. This is why my 11-year-old nephew can do calculus without breaking a sweat.
She’s been thoroughly appalled at all the crap like this that we’ve seen lately. She’s old enough to remember a time when she couldn’t use a particular bathroom, shop at a particular store, or sit on a particular bench because of her skin color. She feels utterly betrayed by these lefty shitshows from whiny dickheads who don’t know what real discrimination is like.

All the legal obstacles aside, I say go for it. And after graduation, the students may demand that they be interviewed for jobs by only non-whites, that their employer be non-white, that their managers, supervisors, and co-workers be non-white, and that the customers of whatever products the employer makes or services the employer delivers be non-white. Yeah, go for it. I’m sure it will work out.
