Florida cannot make an announcement like that. There is no State Income Tax here in the Bikini State. Here in my area of the Northwest Florida Panhandle, there are 4 Commissary stores within 100 miles of most of us, and a very dense, active/retired/former military population. The local businesses know this and show it in a positive treatment of us. Having lived in several areas across the country, I feel that this is the best address for those who appreciate the military and who want to feel appreciated.
Frankie Cee, you also have an Air Force Hospital and a Navy Hospital within that same area, not to mention several branch clinics.
My military retirement is 100% tax free in Iowa. Been that way for a couple of years now. Should be that way in every state!!

He took office in January and this week unveiled his budget and a bunch of new taxes, as well as increases to existing ones, such as the gas tax and sales tax. That didn’t take long–about a month.

When I was on jury duty one of my fellows was dressed in old ACU trousers, tan boots, Army sweat shirt, and wool cap. He also said he was surprised to have jury duty because he was new to town and wasn’t sure he could find the place. He said he held a security clearance I’ve never heard of; so I thought if one holds such a clearance should one admit to having it without being asked? He said he was recently discharged after serving 8 years in Army Intelligence. He said he made Corporal before he was commissioned in Army Intelligence. He said he was currently out of work, but, he had worked at IHOP and he had applied at places such as Denny’s and IHOP.
He did not ask me for money so I couldn’t ask the Sheriff’s Deputies to arrest him for felonious stupidity.
So much BS, so little time.

You find the Heat & Eat Kohinoor boxes at the grocery, Big Lots, or whoever sells them in your neighborhood. Make a selection from among the many choices. Take it home, fix some rice, heat the paneer makhani in the microwave. Hope you didn’t forget to buy some naan at Aldi’s, an international food store, or wherever you can get it because you need to throw that into the toaster oven for a few minutes.
Put it all on a platter and enjoy. Might be enough for two, depending.
Now, the sad part about all this. Knew it was good stuff because it was recommended by someone whose food tastes I trust, so I got a nice variety of the different types. Didn’t notice that all of it was kosher, which is fine – the rabbis who declare such things do it for nothing, but they were also halal certified, which is not a free thing and may actually end up supporting terrorism. Since I already owned the stuff, I have been eating it. But, as good as it is, I will be buying no more of it.

The “halal” cert likely derives from the kosher cert (the two are virtually the same). It’s almost certainly used a marketing point by the manufacturer vice indicative of any ties to radical Islam. I’m pretty sure the firm that manufactures the Kohinoor line of curries is both Indian- and Hindu-owned.
I’m personally not particularly fond of any of the paneer curries; I don’t much care for paneer cheese. But IMO most of the lentil, bean, and chickpea varieties are quite tasty – particularly if you add some chicken and serve them over rice. In particular, the Peshewar Dal Makhani is excellent that way.
Update: the company’s website says the firm was founded by 3 brothers from Amritsar – which is the Sikh Faith’s holy city. So the firm may well be Sikh owned vice Hindu.

This is wild stuff. The decision regarding the travel ban was rendered by a three-judge panel, each nutty as hell. Anyway, get this. The decision was so harebrained that other members of the court said, ‘Huh? They wrote what?’ or words to that effect. It is now underway that the 9th’s full circus review the Triad’s zany decision. In other words, the most reversed court in the land is trying to save its own ass from itself. Too funny…and sick.

The notion that a court–any court–could substitute its own judgment for that of the chief executive in a matter of national security is patently absurd. Couple that with the finding by this gang of three that the immediate and irreparable harm caused by the executive order’s temporary halt to foreign nationals coming here from certain countries is that foreign students can’t attend classes here and foreign researchers can’t perform research and you have a first-rate example of an activist court that is out of control. It is a ridiculous position. I am sick and tired of these agenda-driven jurists who disregard existing law and create their own. Life terms need to end. Yesterday.

You do realize that there is case law from the Supreme Court that backs the 9th’s stance on the economic harm, right? So the economic harm of the decision was not out of the blue. The ban was overbroad. That’s all there is to it. The law says that the President cannot ban people based on their nationalities and that is what the ban did. Where the 9th jumped the shark was on several fronts. First, they made it appear that they have the authority to review the evidence for placing a country on the DHS security list and then approving that placement. They do not. The second problem is the issue of the extension of Constitutional rights and privileges to people who have not come to the US or even applied to come here. That means the judges wanted to say that US law applies world wide and that’s not the case. I do agree that if the US has issued a visa and it is suddenly revoked for no reason and you are a legal permanent resident, there should be a hearing if your visa is going to be revoked. That’s a due process claim to everyone in the country. But to extend that protection to other countries is wrong. The bottom line is that the government had to prove that in a trial, they would win on the merits and so the TRO should be removed now. The problem is that with banning of nations being against the law, the administration most likely would not win. The 9th got the decision right on the whole ban, but wrong on many of the underlying arguments. It should also be noted that while the 9th is overturned the most, that’s because it hears more cases and covers more people and states than any other circuit. (40% of the population and 8 states.) However, as a percentage of decisions overturned, they aren’t the worst. Last time I looked that 4th and the 10th had that distinction. Trump has an easy out here. I read this morning that Tucker Carlson had an interesting interview last eveing with a fellow named Kouross Emaneli. He is a student (an old student, he looks to be) at NYU and he wrote an op-ed piece in which he advocates the eradication of the Republican Club at NYU for inviting a certain speaker to the school. He doesn’t think that free speech includes certain speech with which one disagrees. Quashing certain speech for that reason renders the 1st Amendment superfluous, wholly unnecessary. But that’s the way the Nazi-like lefties roll. They truly are a vile lot. As for Kouross Esmaeli, I have no idea whether he is an American citizen, Iranian, as his name suggests, or something else. He is a PhD candidate at NYU and his profile says that he “is an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker and living in New York. He is currently on the Board of the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association and a member of the Big Noise Film collective with whom he was covered topics as varied as Iran’s 2008 Parliamentary elections and the case of Louisiana’s Jena 6. Be careful out there, folks. Apparently today is “Make a Friend Day.” So, if some stranger walks up and inquires “Wanna be my friend?” knocking them out may be an overreaction.

That may have been on my mind last night. I spent the afternoon on groceries and then decided to go buy a cheap cheeseburger and fries at the restaurant on the highway. I know one of the waitresses real well, good friend. While I was paying my bill, these two ladies wearing camo walked in through the front door. I thought maybe they were Marines, so I asked the waitress to find out if they were from Great Lakes, and they were. I decided to use my meager discretionary fund, and bought their dinner. They came up to the register to ask about it, and turned out to be Army women. I guess it’s Reserve weekend, but the Army at Great Lakes?
The older one of them remembered the WACs and knew about the WAVES and WAFs, and like me, thinks it’s sad, very sad, that these younger women know nothing about the history of their service.
Maybe that will change. It was nice to talk to them.
I wished them well and went home. That’s my ‘make a friend’ story.
