To the moon!

Artemis II Mission Patch

Artemis II is scheduled to launch in about an hour, with everything being reported as go for launch. If they take off, they’re gonna take a spin around the moon, in a repeat of the historic Apollo 8 mission 57 years ago last Christmas. This is the next step to once more walking on the moon. God, it’s good to be back!

Watch it live with me;

The last time humans traveled past Earth orbit was 1972, for the Apollo 17 mission. The Artemis II mission is staffed with;

  • Captain Reid Wiseman, USN
  • Captain Victor Glover, USN
  • Christian Koch (American)
  • Colonel Jeremy Hansen, RCAF

Koch will be the first woman to leave Earth orbit and travel around the moon. Glover will be the first black man to do the same. Hansen will be the first Canadian.

How about Frank and “Fly Me to the Moon”?

Another great one

What about Moon River?
It’s wider than a mile.

Commissioner Wretched

I’m crossing it in style … some day.

Ralph never sent Alice on her occasionally threatened moon trip.

Two points:
– First lunar mission in 44 years is way more important than first THIS or first THAT (insert special group). As a matter of fact, going back is sufficiently cool that I am able to choke back my dislike of them loading three “firsts” into the crew.
– Second, it is still true, there are only two kinds of countries, those who fly to the moon and those who use metric.

As Alan Shepherd said, let’s light this candle!

26Limabeans

“those who use metric”
You mean like NATO?

Hate_me

…and American servicemen – as were many of those original moonshot astronauts and half of these current ones.

I’m more disappointed that, 57 years later, we can only almost do what we once did multiple times.

RGR 4-78

The computers on the Apollo space craft didn’t have half the computing power of my current phone, and here we are 57 years later and damn near sucking hind tit to the Chinese in a new space race.

We should have had lunar bases years ago and been establishing same on Mars by now.

Too much wasted money trying to be the world police and make everybody in the 3rd world happy, not to forget the massive graft in social services here at home.

Yet, if not for Trump and others that have fought for it, this would not be happening.

The first lunar massage parlor?

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

That would be interesting in a no/low gravity situation.

RGR 4-78

So, you are saying that someday there may actually be a Moon Sauna on the moon.

RGR 4-78

Hell yes. If you can’t make coms you are F%*ked.

rgr769

Yes, in SF if you are a deployed ODA commander and your team can’t communicate, you won’t be one much longer. In our annual European UW FTX, failure to communicate or get your team captured, and it was game over. Such commander would be relieved and get a derogatory OER. In my experience on that exercise, I had one of my men captured in an attack on a RR bridge, but he escaped in the confusion of the fire fight at the target.

Unless your phone is really old it should be about 5 million times faster than the Apollo 11 computer.

Those guys are still around?

You just KNEW this mission would be crewed by a bunch of “firsts“. NASA is the epitome of “woke“.

I have a payload in my boss’s office for Artemis IV….but we still have to get through Space X getting their vehicle all in order and Artemis III done and THEN we get to drop this…..

I’ll be in my back yard watching…

David

Still remember Shepherd, Glenn, and all the rest. Whole school watched on probably a 17 inch B&W TV set up in the gymnasium. Watched the Moon landing years later at my then-girlfriend’s house. Made a special point to watch the SECOND shuttle launch – first re-used spacecraft in history.

rgr769

I watched the first one in the battalion orderly room in Baumholder, Germany just before I left to run the 106mm recoiless rifle range.

ChipNASA

I mean it’s not like we faked going there not once but six times before which was the logic from the Apollo 16 astronaut one of the last ones living to go to the moon which seems pretty solid.,
“The moon landing was faked!!!”
Which one of 6?!?! 🫩😑

That being said, I’m just gonna leave this here for you guys to have to share with whoever needs it….

I have a couple of studio photos of the landing … this is the only one I can find for the time being.

Night launches are much better. Artemis I went up around 0100 which lit up the whole sky. Goodspeed & good luck Artemis II.

^^^ Without question.

Years ago, we watched an evening launch from Wallops Flight Facility that was impressive.

Fast forward to October 2014, the failed Antares launch was quite a spectacle to behold.

Commissioner Wretched

And there are people who will watch the damn thing live, in person, in living color, and swear it ain’t real, it’s CGI, it’s AI, it’s whatever makes their deluded world real.

To paraphrase something once said about religion:

To those who know, no proof is necessary.
To those who do not know, no proof is sufficient.

I watched from one of the Space Center watch parties last night. Everyone was thrilled. Truly a fine group of humans we are sending up as a slice of humanity.

God speed, safe journey and see you on the flight line.

NASA’s Moon Mission Hits the Fan: Artemis II Toilet Breaks Down Hours After Launch
While four astronauts hurtle toward the Moon on NASA’s Artemis II, the crew had to call Houston about a broken toilet just hours into the flight.
The fancy new Orion spacecraft toilet — billed as a big upgrade from the old Apollo days of plastic bags — glitched with a blinking fault light on the urine system. Astronaut Christina Koch, acting as space plumber, followed step-by-step instructions from the ground to fix it.
They got it working again after some troubleshooting, but the whole episode highlights the clunky reality of government space travel. The compact unit sits in a tiny compartment with handholds to keep astronauts from floating away in zero gravity. It comes wrapped in bright orange foam for noise control and is so loud you need ear protection to use it.
This is what happens when billions in taxpayer dollars fund overly complicated systems that fail basic tests right out of the gate. Apollo crews managed without private toilets decades ago. Today’s version promises privacy but delivers headaches — and apparently requires mission control to walk astronauts through basic waste management.
Space is hard enough without the potty breaking on day one. At least they fixed it before anyone had to resort to backup bags. For now.

This is why one should always pee before leaving the house.

Mark L.

Considering how old most of you crusty fucks are, you probably pee yourself regularly outside your house as well.

SFC D

Ooooh, there’s a crushing blow. I may never recover.

Not a Lawyer

With only 330 Cubic feet of space between the four of them, things could get smelly fast.

RGR 4-78

That’s a wee bit tight.

Claw

Did she get her step-by-step instructions from Howard Wolowitz?

Cause he’s a space plumber.

Odie

Did wallowitz have anything to do with the design?

Odie

Maybe old tech was better?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=phAEpCfn3Rk

Mark L.

Glad we’ve all reversed our opposition to NASA, just like we are all pro-war now that Trump is in office. Wait until you guys find out the mission has a woman and a black man on it. Did you guys delete all the comments about you supporting Iran as long as no boots were on the ground? Because we are about to have boots on the ground and you guys are going to have to do a lot of backtracking.

Not a Lawyer

I haven’t reversed my position on either one. I am pretty consistent across the board.

Mark L.

Well good news! According to Fox News, the President’s favorite media source, there are DEFINITELY weapons of mass destruction this time!

SFC D

I was against what Obama was doing to NASA. Try harder.

Mark L.

Oh, did the Muslim President make all astronauts eat Halal meals in space or something?

MustangCPT

Oh shut the fuck up.

Mark L.

Aw sowwy, I forgot this is your safe space. Hey, where’d PH2 go? Did she finally die in that trailer of hers with all her cats?

Deckie

Wow. Dumbass comment.

Mark L.

Sorry, shitbird. Sometimes I forgot this is a hugbox for Trumphumpers. Just wanted to stop by to see how you guys are liking all the cheap groceries and gas since Trump took office.

Odie

Sorry, but you need to do a bit more research.

Let me help you out a little.

https://wallethub.com/edu/gas-prices-over-time/121770

Mark L.

Yea, I remember when Trump promised gas prices wouldn’t be lower, but would be “about the same as during the Biden administration.” Thanks for clearing that up. Also, guess you had a hard time finding a similar chart for grocery prices.

jim

Gas will fluctuate regardless of inflation, commodity, especially during a war. It will come back down. Food and most necessities will stay up after horrible inflation/economic policies, wages have to catch up. Not to mention forced wages in entry level food/service job market, 22/hr.

Not a Lawyer

I believe everyone was bitching about the price of eggs…. let’s see:

https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/eggs-us

Yep, cheaper than any time in the last five years. Go figure.

Deckie

Oh no, how will I ever recover from little Mark L’s dumbass replies? Oh man.. you really got me there.

Fucking loser. 🤣

Not a Lawyer

Nah, he cancelled the Mars mission. Feet of clay and all.

jim

I bet you are fun at parties, damn.

Mark L.

You guys going to do a thread on Bondi’s firing? Noem’s outster? Gen George’s firing? The Kid Rock incident? Man, it must be hard to be a discussion blog when so little is happening in the news right now.

jim

This isn’t Bluesky but will interact with you a little. Bondi firing I don’t like, Noem became a distraction, George is a Biden leftover. Pilots should have been punished for Kid Rock incident.

Mark L.

I like your idea of firing every admiral and general when a new President takes over. I don’t know why we haven’t been doing that all along.

jim

Really, he fired all of them, roughly 40-45 4 stars, not counting hundreds of Brigadier/Rear Admirals/07 and up. I confess, did not know this.

Mark L.

I mean, yes, you just suggested that every leftover should be removed. Goddamn do you idiots not even bother to read what you type?

Not a Lawyer

A really insipid and needy person would just start a discussion about it in posting about our nation returning to the Moon for the first time in 50 years. I mean they could, but they would have to be really discourteous and envious of other people’s success because they are kind of a loser and yet also be an attention whore.

You don’t know anyone like that do you?

jim

Topic was spaceships and turned into food and gas prices, I see the correlation.

Mark L.

Because most Americans are concerned with lowering food and gas prices, not wasting money to go to the moon. This thread was a distraction to the economy being complete shit right now. The good news is that I know you guys are complaining like everyone else is despite your words here. I honestly like the new Trump: fucking over the entire country instead of just blue states his second term.

Deckie

🥱

SFC D

He’s not a whore. He’s not getting paid. Mire of an attention slut.

Slow Joe
