Hacksaw Ridge opens November 4th
The marketing folks with the Mel Gibson movie, “Hacksaw Ridge“, want me to remind you that the movie opens in theaters nationwide next week.
Inspired by the true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Doss alongside Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn.
We’ve written about Mr Doss a few times in the last few months.
Category: Real Soldiers
I will be there, Joe
I plan on seeing it. Would that I could be be 1/10 of 1% the man Desmond Doss was!
I will be waiting for the DVD.
Better this than Tom Cruise’s latest attempt to look like the world’s deadliest midget.
Ditto. The local theater is a dive, and located in the middle of our area’s DMZ. I’ll order it from Amazon for half the price of a ticket, and watch in the comfort of my own living room.
Each time I read of his heroism, I am more in awe. Just another reason to dislike posers. (As if I needed another reason.) I am humbled by men and women such as this.
He was not infantry so I will not watch it.
I will watch it.
Dude, you are doing it wrong. You are supposed to get angry at my post totally missing my superb sense of humor.
Come on bro, get with the program.
Oh. That was humor?
(Spock face)
Is this what they call “trolling”?
I thought DAB had pushed and discredited you (TAH MMFIC) into obscurity so why is Hollywood asking for your endorsement?
Well, I don’t know who you talking to, but I would like to steal it and take it personally and have a witty come back on it. And yes, my grammar sucks.
So nobody has ever discredited me because I discredit myself every time I open my discredited mouth.
About hollywood, I am in my own personal conflict with hollywood, so I pay zero money for their indoctrination, even though I still watch most of it.
Besides, war movies suck. Even the best of them are full of exaggerations and made up crap.
Come on, they gave an Oscar to the hurt locker. I have never seen a movie LIE so much about the military. I think only Shooter is worst.
Jarhead was worse than hurt locker.
That is all.
It’s a Hollywood movie, not a history lesson. Movies are made to make money, not teach history. Any Oliver Stone movie is a perfect example. Entertaining? Yes. Accurate? Hardly. But most of us know that going in.
“Galaxy Quest” isnt real?
*Shock Face*
I will buy it, as soon as it comes out on dvd
Good to know
It has been on my calendar forever. I am counting the hours. As I said before and now say again, if someone concocted this story it would be too ridiculous to be credible. This is one story that Hollywood didn’t have to play around. The bonus is that Gibson directed it. He is not a favored son of Hollywood for all of the right reasons.
^^^WORD^^^
“is not a favored son of Hollywood for all of the right reasons.”
Alcohol-fueled rants about Jews, and smacking around his baby-momma?
I hate Hollywood, for reasons as varied and sundry as the day is long.
That said, I’ll gladly plunk down for a ticket to this one.
He is credited with saving 75 men. The government thought he’d saved a hundred, but Doss didn’t think he’d had time to save more than fifty, so they split the difference.
Is the Medal of Honor -enough- for something like this?
All I can say is, I hope he had two dozen kids.
They should’ve made a larger version for him.
Heroic story aside, perhaps this film might also show the general public that the Army also fought in the Pacific to the tune of around 4 times as many divisions as the USMC. It does get old having to repeatedly make that point.
The Army gets the short stick re participation in the war against Japan in the Pacific.
24th Infantry Division
Motto: First to Fight!
Used smallarms to down 5 Japanese planes during the Pearl Harbor attack.
The Phillippinos hung the name “Victory” on us for their liberation, thus we are known as the Victory Division. Helmets and vehicles bear a prominent “V” marking.
There are of course plenty of other examples.

I was part of the 40th ID as a member of the CA-ARNG. 40th ID started out in defense of the outer Hawaiian islands, participated in the fighting on New Britain, and engaged in several actions in liberation of the Philippine Islands.
I ran a minor medical aid call on the wife of an elderly gentleman who jumped into Luzon with the 11th Airborne. Very nice old guy, now carves homemade toys for his great-grandkids.
Aww c’mon now don’t be a hater!!! Lol. Not everyone can be a Marine!
As a former medic I certainly want to see this. Remember posers, this man was an ordinary line medic. No tabs, berets,or exo-atmospheric re-entry jump wings.
Whatcha wanna bet that in a year or two we’ll have posers making up stories from scenes in Hacksaw Ridge?
They’ll be real clever, though. They’ll talk about Chainsaw Ridge instead….
Graybeard wins the internets for today!!!!
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadamit. For reasons beyond my control, I have to wait until Saturday to see this movie.Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadamit.
Excellent movie but don’t think it will win Academy Award esp. as it was directed by Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson who Hollywood has been hostile to for years.
