Sgt Reckless – Redux
I’ve previously written about Sgt Reckless – the USMC horse that served honorably and heroically in Korea. In 2013, the USMC erected a statue in her honor IVO the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico.
When the Korean War ended, Sgt Reckless returned to the US with the USMC. She (yes, Sgt. Reckless was a filly) lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1968 at Camp Pendleton, CA.
Until recently, she had no monument there. This week that will change. On Friday, a statue in her honor will be dedicated at Camp Pendleton, CA. It’s similar to the one at Quantico.
Well done, Marines.

I spent 16 years in the Marine Corps and was not aware of that story Hondo, thanks for sharing that.
Such a noble and outstanding beast…
“Something about the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.”
–Sir Winston S. Churchill
Hondo, at some point in her life she went from being a filly to a mare, per the film I watched. 😉
I’m going to put myself out here OC…ALL female horses below the age of 4 are Fillies. After age 4 they become Mares or after having a foal. We can continue this lesson with a foal being a suckling and at what point it becomes a weanling…..LOL
Warrior, thanks for the info. I was of the impression that it was after they had a foal that they were called mares. I guess the age thing makes sense or some of ’em would always be fillies.
Now can you ‘splain heifer vs cows?
Simple. Chelsea is a heifer and Hillary is a cow.
