Military budget for gender reassignment treatments

| October 1, 2016

Beginning today, the military has a budget number to work with for gender reassignment treatments – $8.4 million, that’s million with an “m”. According to USA Today;

There are between 1,320 and 6,630 transgender troops in the active-duty force of 1.3 million, according the RAND Corp. which conducted a study for the Pentagon. Of those troops, RAND estimates that between 30 and 140 would like hormone treatment, and 25 to 130 would seek surgery.

The Defense Department policy states if a service member’s ability to serve is hindered by a “medical condition or medical treatment related to their gender identity,” they will be treated. When an active duty service member receives approval from a military medical provider to undergo gender transition, the commander must approve the timing of medical treatment.

Funny how there’s alsways a discussion and a report involved when these things come out of Congress, but not this time – it goes straight to the field.

Ron Crews, executive director of Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, said this is not the best use of government money, because soldiers undergoing treatments or surgeries will be unqualified for deployment for extended periods of time.

“I think this is a gross misuse of military medical dollars that should be used to make our military forces deployable or to help those who are wounded or injured while they are deployed,” Crews, a veteran, said.

Supporters of the new policy says that there is a cost-saving aspect that everyone is overlooking – it will lower the suicide rate. If we’re talking strictly cost-savings, suicide is a better option for the government because they’re going to be financially responsible for a lifetime of treatments. Of course, someone will misunderstand what I just wrote and accuse me of wanting transgendered people to kill themselves – but that’s not what I said.

Just altering someone’s physical characteristics, there is still the mental aspect to deal with. Whatever it is, it’s not service connected and it’s not the government’s responsibility to treat, well, unless they’re going to put it on recruiting posters.

Total fucking bullshit.

Sorry, that’s all I can come up with.

Amen… just another SJW issue that “needs to be addressed”.

Bullshit!

OldManchu

Don’t like the dick the Lord gave you???…..

Go step on a fucking IED!

Ex-PH2

I sincerely doubt that any effort put into this will stop or lower the suicide rates among these people. Self-hatred is a very strange thing, but it is very real.

Can we stop wasting money on this crap and buy some ammo and weapons for training instead?

QM1

Most people want to dance around the mental health issue that these people are going through and be PC. I just think that enabling this nonsense is going to make the issue even bigger and therefore cause an even greater drain on tax dollars being spent on things it should never be spent on.

Ex-PH2

‘dance around the mental health issue’ – precisely. It used to be that if a condition existed prior to entry, it was a no-go. What I’ve pulled out of news reports is that it is still the case, as evidenced by one of those three young men who went to the Middle East to fight with the Peshmerga, who was denied US military service because he had a seizure as a 5-year-old.

If these people with deep-seated mental health issues are acceptable, why was he not? Obviously, his own will power overcame any possible impediment to his fighting the good fight. And yet, he was NOT suitable when these other people, whose self-esteem is completely screwed up by poor self-perception, are acceptable and we, the taxpayers, will have to pay for their issues.

I just find this completely unacceptable at all levels.

Aftercare for a transgender is estimated at $1.2-2.8M per lifetime. That is more than a double amputee.

Those aren’t my estimates, those are the VAs. Also, the estimate above is for surgical costs, none of which we will done in a DoD hospital. The also allows the VA to perform or supervise performance of gender altering surgery post active duty.

5 years out, total costs for mental health, gender accommodation, surgical care, disability benefits, spousal and family counseling benefits will be in excess of $100M/year.

And don’t forget, the vast majority of transgender patients will be ineligible for operational assignments, PRP level programs, remote assignments and, unless the rules change, TS clearance.

Sleep well America, your government is making you safer.

I still maintain that our society has fully embraced and emulated Nazi ideology, i.e., determining whose life is worth living and who should die, and now, perpetuating the experiments of Dr. Mengele.

Fifty years ago, these folks would have been properly diagnosed and treated for their obviously severe psychiatric conditions.

Pinto Nag

Fifty years ago these people would have been stuffed in a mental hospital that was built like a medieval fortress, and given shock treatments until they drooled.

John Robert Mallernee

@ PINTO NAG :

Yes, that (and more) is what they did to me.

Luckily (for me) there was a very unpopular war, and the Army was desperate for men.

Rochambeau

So, precisely between .001% and .005%.

If I want to track something I use data. I can look at a unit manning report and tell how many Baptists with a security clearance are on that roster. I could see how many bayonets were authorized on a unit’s MTOE. Why can’t I see any LBGTQ on that roster? Why doesn’t this important, quantifiable information that’s super-duper critical to military operations have a column on that report?

Wait! Call the Pentagon! We’ll have them add another column and anyone could press a couple of buttons and see how many LBGT or Q are in the military. I’m a fucking genius!

But couldn’t people then discriminate when a LBGTQ came to a unit? Yes, there’s now a record! We’ll put the new column next to race and gender. [/sarcasm]

Look, the proponents don’t want to actually quantify LBG. The CDC had people self-identify in one study and it came in at something like 3% IIRC. I suspect other geographical locations in the US would have different percentages. These numbers would dwarf transgender. When the military actually gets serious about it, they will track it just like race and gender.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight.

Some presbyopic Sumerian astronomer sees a boat-shaped 1-mile-long asteroid moving in the early morning sky on June 29, 3123BC, makes some notes about it on a clay tablet in cuneiform, goes around warning everyone that a Big Rock from Outer Space is going to smack down in the area of what is now Tel el-Hammam and they’d better leave, but they ignore him except for one of his neighbors who decides to bail out and spreads the word all over the south Jordan Valley about it. Yeah, and asteroid is the equivalent of 1,000 tons of TNT, which makes for quite an explosion, never mind the fallout of scalding cinders and superheated shockwave from the impact itself, something that would literally turn living tissue to dust in the blink of an eye.
Nowadays, we call those Near Earth Objects. There are thousands of them in orbit between Jupiter and Earth. And, yes, one of these days, one of those Big Rocks from Outer Space is going to smack the Earth again, maybe several in several places.

Seems to me that gravity and physics have more to do with it than any Mysterious Unseen Force, but the primitive mind would attribute something so profound to a Mysterious Unseen Force (gravity is good for that, because you can’t see it).

After all, if a Bushman thinks a Coke bottle tossed out of an airplane means the gods must be crazy, anything is possible, right? RIGHT?????

Oh, and while I’m at it, there are Four Mysterious Unseen Forces: gravity, electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force and weak nuclear force. Did you know that there are physicists trying to figure out why some stars are known to move of their own will/volition? Does that mean they’re sentient? You never know.

HMC Ret

“Does that mean they’re sentient?”

Don’t refer to them as sentient, PH2. You’ll hurt their feelings.

Ex-PH2

Chief, indie stars need love, too.

11B-mailclerk

A -tiny- asteroid impact would rate 1000 ton-equivalent of TNT.

The ones we see passing by Earth tend to be much, much larger, with anticipated impact yields much higher.

Like 100-10,000 -megatons-. The one that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago went about 200 tera-tons. (10km diameter high-velocity impactor).

We think of our technological terrors lurking in missile silos and submarines, and shudder. These pale in comparison to the force of nature, in the rather common bombardment of Earth by chunks of stray rock.

-We- cant generate 100m tsunamis. Not yet.

Ex-PH2

I took all of that from an article about the excavation of Tel al-Hammamm. I think the 1,000 tons of TNT is an underestimate of the impact of that asteroid. I have no doubt it was exactly that, or that it exploded as it entered the upper atmosphere.

The Chelyabinsk superbolide has also been classified as an asteroid. The Chelyabinsk meteor exploded at a height of 12 miles (20 km) above Earth, releasing 500 kilotons of energy, approximately 30 times the yield of the nuclear bomb over Hiroshima. It caused a shock wave that broke windows in six Russian cities and caused some 1,500 people to seek treatment for injuries, mainly from flying glass. Later, about five tons of meteoritic material reached the ground, including a 1,400-pound (650-kg) meteorite that was recovered by divers from the bottom of Russia’s Lake Chebarkul. http://earthsky.org/space/chelyabinsk-meteor-mystery-3-years-later

Around four to six ton reached the ground as meteorites, representing just 0.05% of the original rock. It was brighter than the sun and caused retinal and skin burns. What is disturbing is that it was so small before it exploded and still caused so much injury and damage, and the origin track of that Big Rock hasn’t yet been determined. I would guess it was only one of the NEOs, but was too small to be tracked.

There’s one waiting out in the Oort Cloud, or maybe in the asteroid belt. We escaped the destruction of Shoemaker-Levy. Earth gets meteor impacts all the time and they all come with no warning.

After what is now many years of re-education and retraining of the American public to accept the unacceptable, there is really no surprise in this new policy, is there? It is just another of the transformations, all of them the work of the federal government, from DADT, to the repeal of DADT, to gays openly serving, to the welcome mat being unrolled at recruiters’ offices for transgenders, to the newly discovered fundamental right for queers to marry, to this. Each step paved the way for the next and all steps were dictated and mandated. Congratulations. Now, what’s next?

Ex-PH2

It’s the new normal, AirCav. We’re just doddering old crones shuffling our wait to dusty shelves.

LC

There’s a considerable difference between a gay guy serving honorably and never letting his sexuality be the responsibility of the government and someone demanding costly gender reassignment surgery from that same government. One is serving the government, the other is asking the government to serve him.

This is stupid. This is not the government’s responsibility.

2/17 Air Cav

Yes, but that’s not the lens through which I view the things I listed. It’s not about cost/benefit for me. It’s about morality and traditional values.

nousdefions

And just how will this make us better at killing people and breaking things?

I’ve told this here before but it’s apropos to this discussion: The French Quarter is full of trannies and has been for decades. Back in the 80’s a bartender there warned me and a group of my salesmen that most of the hot-looking “chicks” in the Quarter had dicks and were working as prostitutes to save enough money to get their plumbing reconfigured.

Now all those hookers have to do is sashay down to the recruiting office for a “paid” tour of duty after which they’ll come out just as mentally fucked up as they went in. Can’t remember where I read that medical studies show that post-op trannies have a higher suicide rate than non-op’s, so there goes that DoD rationalization.

What’s next, face lifts and Botox injections for generals and their wives?

A bit off topic but my Boomer buddy in Guam just sent me this: A man takes the day off work and decides to go out golfing. He is on the second hole when he notices a frog sitting next to the green. He thinks nothing of it and is about to shoot when he hears ‘Ribbit 9 Iron.’ The man looks around and doesn’t see anyone. Again, he hears, ‘Ribbit 9 Iron.’ He looks at the frog and decides to prove the frog wrong, puts the club away and grabs a 9 iron. Boom! He hits it 10 inches from the cup. He is shocked. He says to the frog, ‘Wow that’s amazing. You must be a lucky frog, eh? The frog replies, ‘Ribbit lucky frog.’ The man decides to take the frog with him to the next hole. ‘What do you think frog?’ ‘Ribbit 3 wood.’ The guy takes out a 3 wood and Boom! – a hole in one. The man is befuddled and doesn’t know what to say. By the end of the day the man golfed the best game of golf in his life and asks the frog, ‘OK where to next?’ The frog replies, ‘Ribbit Las Vegas.’ They go to Las Vegas and the guy says, ‘OK frog, now what?’ The frog says, ‘Ribbit Roulette.’ Upon approaching the roulette table the man asks, ‘What do you think I should bet?’ The frog replies, ‘Ribbit $3000, black 6.’ Now, this is a million-to-one shot to win, but after the golf game the man figures what the heck. Boom! Tons of cash comes sliding back across the table. The man takes his winnings and buys the best room in the hotel. He sits the frog down and says, ‘Frog, I don’t know how to repay you. You’ve won me all this money and I am forever grateful.’ The frog replies, ‘Ribbit Kiss Me.’ He figures why not considering all the frog did for him and deserves it. With a kiss the frog turns into a gorgeous 15-year-old girl. And that, your honor, is how the girl… Read more »

It strikes me as enabling.

The what-is and -what-happens whens are neither here nor there. In fact, wondering those things plays right into the hands of the social engineers b/c asking those things assumes the given, that these very sick and confused people are okay for military service at all. I’ve given that some thought, and the best I can come up with is this: as Americans, we’ve always believed that every person has the right to go to hell in whatever fashion they please. Where we got off the rails seems to be that some folks think that’s a round trip ticket!

Hondo

No. Where we ran off the rails was when we started to accept the fact that the Federal government should pay for it.

So long as someone doesn’t screw with others’ rights or involve children in perverted acts, I don’t much care what someone does. If they want to be a perv, as long as they do so among willing adults that’s their issue – not mine.

But when you start to use my taxes to pay for their perversions, then I care. One helluva lot.

Pinto Nag

There are people who don’t want THEIR taxes spent on the military.

There are people who think NASA is nonsense.

There are people who want all of the intelligence agencies shut down.

I could go on, but you get the point. There is somebody out there who supports what the government does, and somebody who doesn’t, for EVERYTHING the government does.

And I think my assessment is fairly accurate. We do things, spend money, whatever, thinking that if we don’t like the result we can go back the way we came. But many times, that simply is not the case, and I’ve seen the real anguish when somebody’s new reality can’t be
changed back. And it IS a version of hell for them.
