Joseph Rice; phony Afghanistan vet at RNC
Our old buddy and serial phony, Joe Rice was featured in Associated Press photo spreads of the Republican National Convention this morning, as well as UPI. No, AP, Joe is not an Afghanistan veteran. The last time he was on active duty was in 1988 and he’s been telling lies about his service ever since.
Rice has claimed Purple Hearts for wounds and service in the first war against Saddam Hussein during which he claims his helicopter was shot down twice and he was captured both times by the Iraqi Army.
Joseph Rice is a serial liar and his lies may have caused the deaths of nine firefighters. I’m ashamed that he gets to own an American flag.

I’m thinking something was certainly a bit “off”. If I recall correctly, W1 to W2 is like 2LT to 1LT – admin action occurring somewhere around 6 YRS TIG that’s de facto approved by local GO-level command; no board action required. It’s pretty much guaranteed in the absence of significant misconduct.

I’ve spent so many hours feeling bad about my time in Afghanistan because I was stuck in a staff job and I so wish I could go back so I could do what I the infantry stuff I was actually trained to do, and this cheesedick just comes along and makes it all up. Well, I could have done that.

Last time I checked, someone in the military can only serve where and in the duty position they’re assigned. And only very rarely does one have much control over where they’re assigned.

However, I could have taken steps at Ranger School to not heatcat and get sent home. Earning the tab would have probably given me more PL time or led me to one of the specialty platoons, instead of finishing my PL time stateside and spending deployment in the 3 shop.
My point is a few different moves on my part could have greatly influenced my role, position, and contribution during deployment. I’m not blameless as to where I ended up.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back, there’s always something you could have done differently that would have increased the chances of things “breaking your way”.
The guy who stepped in the hidden hole and broke his leg could have stepped 6″ to the left or right, too. He didn’t. Doesn’t make him any less of a soldier.
Unfortunately, no one I know can accurately foretell the future. So unless you deliberately did something manifestly stupid, I don’t think you have any reason to beat yourself. “Right place, wrong time” happens to damn near everyone at some point.
Pushing oneself a bit too hard in training in an attempt to succeed doesn’t seem to me to fall into the “manifestly stupid” category.

Any of us have pushed ourselves a bit more than was wise – and sometimes it jumped up and bit us. (I still do, but my family has learned to warn me off from most of my stupid, tho’ I did work myself to heat exhaustion just this spring.)
A bad break in circumstances when a man (or woman) is doing their best is just that – a bad break. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I was an 11B, not a poser, and served at the same time frame in Korea as he. I wonder if we met, since I knew most of the pilots and crew in 2nd ID (assuming that is where he was).

As I’ve explained several times in the last several months, Rice was activated for Desert Storm, but he didn’t deploy (no service awards). The National Personnel Records Center wouldn’t pick up his National Guard time unless he was activated for school or deployment. After 1988, he wasn’t activated.
The DD-214 our (his and my) mutual FB friend posted shows AD time for 3 months, 8 days from Jan. 22, 1991 to March 29, 1991; why I am suspicious of the provenance of the document.
He posted on my wall a photo of an SK-61 with a bullet hole, by way of “proving” he was in Afghanistan. Not a military desert color scheme, though (a blue color), and not a military uniform, that I can see. I told him that working as a civilian contractor is not the same as a military deployment.
The awards on his DD-214 don’t seem to line up with a deployment to SWA in ’91.
That DD214 may be accurate and the NPRC didn’t think that it was important enough to add to his FOIA. Who knows what was in the tech’s head when he/she skipped over it. My post about him has been up for months and it wasn’t until last night that he decided to send that DD214 out to several people. He could have sent it to me, but he didn’t. He knows my email address, we’ve had discussions in the past.
My last comment to him was that flying aircraft in Afghanistan, and taking fire, does not make one an “Afghan Vet”, any more than driving a deuce-and-a-half load of firefighters to the fire line makes on a “veteran firefighter”. And that is just what I did in 1996, in support of the efforts to suppress the Roggé and Anderson Complex fires near Yosemite National Park.
