A Day of Rage in Salt Lake City
B. Woodman went to his local “Day of Rage” in Salt Lake City and sends this report;
I went to the so-called “Day of Rage” yesterday, for ?#?BLM?, just to see how many, and what kinds of, people would show up. How out”Rage”ous would this event be? Actually, it turned out to be not much of an event at all. A fizzle.
I arrived at the SLCC (Salt Lake Community College, 4600 S Redwood Rd) campus shortly before 5PM (when it was supposed to start), guided in by two TV camera vans, Channel 4 KTVX ABC, and Channel 13 Fox. No one else was there yet.
After a few minutes, close to 5 o’clock, some people started trickling in, a pair of older (ancient) hippie types, and a few younger people.Several other cars, and people drifted in, and a few minutes after 5, there were maybe a dozen people gathered. They were just chatting among themselves, apparently renewing acquaintances. No protest, no podium, no microphones.
Some ten minutes later, one black dude started chanting the tired refrain, “Black Lives Matter”. So I challenged him on that, asking him, “What about me? Doesn’t my life matter? Don’t white lives matter? Or Asians? Or anyone else?” That quieted him down. Then some white woman, wearing a pink blouse, came over to me and told me that I was disrupting this event, and to go away. Must have been feeling the “white privilege guilt”. Of course, I didn’t leave. At least, not right away. I wanted to see what else (if anything), might happen. And, unsurprisingly enough, nothing else happened. So about 5:30, I left to go home. (I had the Missus Woodman and dinner waiting for me)
There were a few counter-protesters there (“All Lives Matter”), so we high-fived and hugged each other.
Before I left, I took a rough count of the people there, total maybe two dozen.. As I mentioned before, there were roughly a dozen (very quiet) “protesters”. There were about half-a-dozen counter protesters. Oh, and four TV people, two reporters, and two cameramen. Can’t forget them. After all, “All Lives Matter”, especially the people who get your message out to the rest of the world. And another half-dozen or so people just hanging around the edges, taking pictures and notes of this non-“event”.
I was there to do a little of both, to take pictures, and to “stir the pot”. So I guess I succeeded in that.
Category: Who knows
It’s outrageous that I the day of rage produced no rage. I am outraged. Thanks for the report.
Oops. That last picture (Pikachu) wasn’t supposed to be sent. That was me playing a silly spoof on the virtual Pokemon Go.
Right and that’s the best part of the whole photo shoot!!
Pokemon go actually generates more excitement than the day of rage….there’s a subtle irony in there somewhere I’m sure!
Glad you like it. The picture is actually sideways.
Somehow it fits.
Actually, the best counter-protest move would have been to yell out that you found a ______ (insert name of rare pokemon)! You would have had a “viral” youtube video….
Pokemon lives matter?
Pikachu Lives Matter, too.
Hey – how come no love for Totoro?
A long time ago, I saw a street protest in Birmingham that had about a dozen people involved. (It was in front of a courthouse and, judging by the sign, had something to do with “imprisoned black leaders”). Driving by it was educational. The protestors were marching around in a tiny little circle…right in front of the TV camera.
I told my grandfather about it later…he said he’d seen it on TV, and it really looked much larger.
Nice angles, Mr. Lilyea. Thank you. I like any sign that there’s hope for the future.
Err, I mean, Mr. Woodman.
Well, I did ask, what if they held a protest and nobody came?
That’s my answer. How was supper?
Supper was great. My wife’s cooking is always good to great. I think I can count on the fingers of one hand (over 40+ years of marriage) the number of meals that she didn’t think were her best, but were just fine to me. She’s her own worst critic.
Day of Rage? More like Day of Massive Apathy…the metro population of Salt Lake City is supposed to be a little north of 180,000 with the local suburbs bringing the number to 1.3 million (according to census figures) I’ve never been so I have no clue to accuracy of these numbers….
So less than 36 people…that pretty much qualifies as a non-event in a population number that size.
Utah apparently has no issue with needing a day of rage, kudos to cooler, and perhaps wiser, heads.
Been there, albeit around a decade ago. I’d have guessed the metro area at mid-to-high 6-figures, but that’s based on a dated impression. Somewhat over a million for the metro area seems plausible.
Provo/Ogden/SLC and their suburbs have rather grown – as well as grown together.
My guess is more people came to look for Pokemon and hatch eggs than to protest…
Thanks for the report. Always funny when the observers outnumber the “protesters.”
That last pic actually is a perfect way to finish your report, Mr. Woodman. (Or do we know each other well enough for me to call you “B?”
)
Close enough. Just don’t call me late for drinks and/or dinner.
A Black Lives Matter rally in Mormon McWhiteytown-I wonder why there was a low turnout?
BTW-I remember a few years ago when there was a story in one of the big national news-weeklies about how parents from, um, troubled parts of places like Southern California were sending there kids to Utah so that they would more likely stay out of trouble. Since, apparently, that worked-there really shouldn’t be any surprise that there isn’t much interest in protesting the state that they chose for safety.
Salt Lake is surprisingly diverse. Brigham City, not so much
Diverse, yes – larger than national average Hispanic and Asian populations. However, the black population of the SLC/Ogden/Provo metro area is less than 3%.
You would be surprised. But no, these events only appeal to the surburbanite, pseudo-adult, guilty white jerkoffs.
Do I know your comrade, Major Woody?
Apparently infections of White Guilt Syndrome are very rare around there, I wonder what they use?
Many people (used to?) use “Sandy Candy” and “Provo Popcorn”.
(Provo and Sandy are two cities in the local area. That was the nickname given to the multitude of mood stabilizers, Prozac, et al. popularly in use at one time.)
Actually, the work ethic around here is such that most people are busy with their own work and/or self-improvement projects and/or helping others and/or volunteer work, there’s not much time left over for “white guilt”. Except for the one woman that accosted me at the DoR.
“A Black Lives Matter rally in Mormon McWhiteytown”
I laughed more than I probably should have after reading that.
It would have been nice to see JRM there playing Kumbaya on his guitar. Maybe next time.
I haven’t seen anything from him in quite some time. I hope he is alright.
I should have known not to comment until I have scrolled all the way down and read all the comments.
His computer went ka-plooey, so he was offline for a brief period, but he got a new one from Walmart.
And in other news, the storm now in mid-Iowa may reach my kingdom by suppertime. That gives me time to take the car to the shop for a diagnostic on its intermittent hiccups. And then later on this week, I have to get the radiator replaced. The new front brakes are good and grabby, thank you.
Supper will (probably) be roast chicken and potato salad w/veggies on the side. Ice tea. Turtle cheesecake for dessert.
It’s nice to have a quiet day, isn’t it?
It has been a goose drownder here the last couple of days.
This coming Sunday 24 July 2016 is PIONEER DAY, the biggest and most important holiday of the year, commemorating the 1847 arrival of Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers to the valley of the Great Salt Lake.
This official state holiday is celebrated in Utah and everywhere else throughout the entire world by local congregations of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints, i.e., the so-called “Mormon” church.
Since this year, Pioneer Day falls on the Sabbath, I’m guessing the usual parades, rodeos, historic reenactments, picnics, barbecues, dances, pageants, plays, concerts, and fireworks displays will probably take place on Friday or Saturday.
If you’d like to also join in on the celebrations, just contact your local Mormon friends and neighbors.
The “DAYS OF ’47” rodeo and parade are broadcast on television, so you might inquire at your local cable TV provider if it’s being shown in your area.
Because of my back, I doubt I’ll be able to go see the parade or fireworks, as I’m usually housebound, but I do have my moccasin boots and my coonskin cap for these rare occasions.
Actually, I’ve been invited by some friends to go camping on Grizzly Ridge tomorrow, for the next three or four days.
It shouldn’t be too difficult for me, since I have my Army surplus sleeping bag rolled out on the bed of my pickup truck.
The last time I was camping up there, a bear came looking for food.
That was several years ago, before my spinal column began collapsing, and I could still walk around.
We’ll see what happens.
John Robert Mallernee, you are definitely THE MOST INTERESTING MAN OF TAH®™!
“Stay thirsty, my friend.”
I think John Mallernee’s proposed adventure sounds like a whole lot more fun than a silly, lame, wannabe-1960s throwback.
#I’m with JRM!
John, I recently had a spinal cord stimulator put in my back, it has only been a couple of weeks now that I have had it working, but it really seems to help me be able to stand for much longer periods of time and has greatly reduced my pain threshold! You may want to check into this medical miracle? I really know how you feel. Take care my friend!
I have an appointment on Friday 05 August with Brandon Douglas Lawrence, M.D., at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center.
I don’t know when the surgery will be (possibly late October), but Dr. Lawrence is reputed to be one of the best surgeons in this field, and treatment at the University of Utah Medical Center is reputed to be FAR better than at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
It’s the Veteran’s Choice program that has referred me to him.
If you are ever in San Diego you need to go to Old Town and visit the Mormon Battalion museum. It is interesting to learn how important the Mormon Battalion was to the start of San Diego.
During the Mexican War, the Mormon Battalion made the longest land march in history.
However, I don’t know if that record still stands.
Did Mao Tse Tung break that record?
They were also the only religiously based unit in U.S. Military history. They also built the first brick building in San Diego.
If you go to Northern Missouri or Western Illinois, there is quite a different feeling for the Mormon military forces. Notably how they were feeding them. (Also the reason Joeseph Smith was shot and killed btw).
Old grudges are the hardest to get rid of apparently.
Joseph*. Sorry about the typo. Definitely need an edit button.
July 21 is “Tim Duncan Day” here in Slammintonio. I don’t expect too much “rage” however…
Race relations in San Antonio are better than in many major cities. It has one of the largest MLK Day marches anywhere, although its black population is only around 7%. The police department does a good job of community outreach – as a result community relations with the police are generally good.
Yep. Slammintonio does pretty good considering it’s size in that respect. Most of our problems stem from the Mexicans shooting each other on the East side.
Although very understaffed, the SAPD and Bexar County cops do a hell of a job keeping things under control and like you said, getting out into the communities. We’re far from perfect but it ain’t Chicago either…
Speaking of our cops – they take their range time seriously. I can’t remember the last time I read about a perp being only “wounded” by one of our cops.
You are not kidding about the local law enforcement folks. I’m not (too much)a fan of gratuitous death but I smile at the nearly daily officer involved shootings in SA that all go without issue or protest from the local law abiding populace.
July 30th is Frank Stallone Day, which will be celebrated throughout Frank Stallone’s house, and probably nowhere else. The odometer will be turning over to 66. It seems as if it were only yesterday that he was playing America’s greatest hero in Terror In Beverly Hills.
only that one of the greatest players in NBA history and a pretty nice guy is retiring. Some fans are angry over that
Worked at Dugway Proving Ground for 6 years and found most Mormons to be nice, decent people. Mormons welcome African-Americans into their religion and even family once they convert. Ergo, AA’s are treated decently in those latitudes (e.g. Utah, Idaho and nearby high Mormon populated areas). I suspect only one AA turned out for the Rage is because the others had other priorities such as figuring out how many wives will be enough.
CM,
Fortunately, the Mormons gave up that multiple wives thing long ago, about maybe 150+ years ago. It was the price to be paid to the FedGov for admission into the United States.
Besides, I can only handle one as it is. Why would I want more?
Now, that said, there are apostates, and offshoot groups (“Reformed” this and “Fundamentalist” that, etc) that still practice polygamy. Look at Warren Jeffs and his cult.
There’s even a TV show where a guy has (forget how many) wives. He tried to get the state of Utah to take him to court over it, but the state wasn’t buying into it.
Unless there’s compelling evidence of child abuse (as there was in the Warren Jeffs case), pretty much polygamy’s a ho-hum anymore.
So, if that floats yer boat, have at it. Good luck.
And don’t forget this guy:
http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=35749
BW, they may have technically stopped the practice but I was told out in the boonies it continues. DPG had a huge older housing area with multiple bedroom quarters on the West side of the cantonment area. Probably had something to do with the large families they had. Just for the heck of it I started the rumor the polygamist families were housed there and the rest in the smaller quarters. The Commander finally told me to knock it off after he started receiving inquiries from DC.
The FLDS church isn’t well received out here usually. Creepy bastards. Also, damn I missed a chance to drive out to SLC and get photos of the protest. I hate SLC traffic anyway…
Great-Great-Grandpa D is buried in Willard UT with 3 of his 4 wives. Why 3, you may ask? Wife #1 didn’t care for wife #2 and chucked him out.
“Worked at Dugway Proving Ground for 6 years and found most Mormons to be nice, decent people.”
IMHO one never has to worry about a Mormon coworker showing up for work drunk, stoned or hung over.
At Dugway, that would be more important than in some other places.
Full disclosure: my uncle worked there as a chemist for about 10 years in the 50s and early 60s. He left before the sheep kill.
Oh, yay! Salt Lake gets its very own day of racism and family fun. Fantastic. Someone crank up Ice-T’s heartwarming melody “CopKiller”. Just a real show of class.
More like “A Day of Dildos”.
I guess the booze and dope were in short supply…
Yesterday, near Richmond, VA, a dozen or so protesters, nearly all white, decided that it would be a good idea that should stop traffic on I-95 to make a point or something. So, with their BLM posters and whatnot, they strung out across the SB lanes and stopped traffic. On the one hand, I am truly sorry to report that not one was struck by a car or truck. On the other hand, that’s good b/c the poor driver who hit them would have had his day, if not his vehicle, ruined. Police warned them (that’s nice) to move or they would be arrested, which is, of course, what they wanted. So, they were arrested. No word on whether anyone died because an ambo or fire engine couldn’t use I95 south or did and was stuck.
This kind of BS keeps reminding me that I want to get a paintball gun and keep it in the car for just such “special occasions”. Ouch!
Damn!! Even Pokemons are in on the BLM. We are doomed…
Actually, I read a story about The Black Panthers or BLM or whatever racist hate group claiming that Pokemon Go was racist. Seems the most preferred eye color of pokemons is blue so that just proves white privilege. I”m not kidding, that is how insane they have gotten
JUST LET a BLM infestation happen near wherever I am at the time, I’d waltz my way near it and yell “RARE POKEMON!!” and watch them turn into cell phone zombies!
Read somewhere earlier in the day about several groups of protesters not playing well together in the same space. Seems some exchange of bodily fluids resulted. Hmmm.
I’m outraged that you didn’t get more pics of the girl wearing the Daisy Dukes…
Yes… I may be old but I’m still breathing…
The classic media trick of overstating crowds (“million man march” … oh, brother) … I’m surprised that the pink shirt lady didn’t scream, “I NEED SOME MUSCLE OVER HERE”
