J Thomas Burch; phony special forces

Burch Bio

The other day we wrote about J Thomas Burch, the VA deputy director in the VA’s Office of General Counsel who also runs the No-Star Charity, the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation that takes in millions of dollars in donations and then spends a couple thousand helping veterans – all while he drives a Rolls Royce to his VA job. He likes to wear a Green Beret to highlight the fact that he was a special forces officer in Vietnam, like in the picture above, which got us to thinking about how much of special forces officer he really is – so we got his records.

Well, it turns out that he did serve in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group from June 1967 – December 1968. he was a Staff Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer – a lawyer – during his assignment there. He went to jump school in October 1967 in Vietnam, but other than that, he has no special forces training;

He’s a member of the Special Forces Association, but they admit that they made a mistake – he should have been an associate member, not a general member.

J THOMAS BURCH - SFA - 1

Burch should really be fired from his charity. He’s a crappy CEO – according to the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation’s 2013 IRS form 990 filing, they took in $7 million in donations, they spent $568,000 helping veterans, they spent $95,000 on salaries for officers and $6 million on professional telemarketers. That’s really piss-poor management.

wow first for once! I bet this guy will go out for his free meal at ( insert chain restaurant here) tomorrow driving his rolls.

If he has done so badly providing for the Vietnam era vets with the charity, i wonder how he screws over the rest of us in his position at the VA. It’s really too bad that beating some ones ass now these days is frowned upon by the law, i see so many people on these pages that i would love to give a personal wall to wall counseling too,

Sapper3307

Its a for profit charity. Its kind off like AER.
Get the cash pay the employees and give out little to nothing.

B Woodman

He looks and acts like a real JAG Off (say it out loud).
Yeah. I went there.

Hondo

In case anyone was wondering, here are the SFA’s membership criteria.

http://www.specialforcesassociation.org/about/membership/

Associate membership, yes; general or decade, uhm, doesn’t look like it.

I’m wondering precisely what he said on his membership application. Hopefully that’s still on file with SFA.

I seem to remember a falsified membership application getting someone in a wee bit o’ trouble with the SFA (working from memory, so I could be wrong about that). Maybe this will be another case of same.

jeff sherman

he probably flashed some of that “charitable” revenue to fast track his application. that would be sad …

20thEB67

Yeah. There`s gonna be a shit-storm over at SFA, and this dickhead deserves each and every turd that lands on him. And more.

A Proud Infidel®™

He has big puffy cheeks, maybe his mouth has been stretched out after it harbored many a *****.

WHAT a DRG-level lowlife.

Eden

Why am I not surprised this meathead would turn up on the poser list?

Holden Magroin

Let me guess who likely owned or had a financial interest in the telemarketing firm that was $6M…

Sorry, HM. I either missed your comment b/c I had my comment window open too long or I am blind. Either way, we are on the same page.

HMCS(FMF) ret.

Either him or his wife… must have learned how to screw vets over from his daytime job.

Dude needs to be in a poundhimintheassprison getting dorked in the squeakhole from Bubba, Thor, Julio and Mr. “Tiny”

2/17 Air Cav

Telemarketers. $6 million? Yeah, well, I would like to know who runs THAT company, if you know what I mean.

Retired Grunt

Holy butt pain batman… 7 million in, only .5 + million to VETS, why isn’t this place under investigation?

Willy Pete

I hate to say it, but probably because it was legal. 85% to the telemarketing firm is about standard for a for profit telemarketer. They generally suck up about 80 to 90 percent of the funds they raise. They have a lot of overhead; they have to pay for office space and equipment and pay their callers.

(When I was much younger, and in debt up to my eyeballs, one of my three jobs was working at a telemarketing firm. I’m not proud of it, but it allowed me to eat on a semi regular basis and live someplace other than my car. When I finally got out of debt, that was the first job I dropped, and God did I feel so much better.)

Main bullet point: Donating money through a telemarketing firm doesn’t help the cause much at all.

A Proud Infidel®™

There’s nothing to be ashamed of in taking a job you don’t like in order to keep earning honest money, I once had to swallow my pride and work as a “tele-pest” myself and I also enjoyed quitting that job!

Bill M

I’d like to see the title to that rolls. Any bets on it being owned/leased to a certain “telemarketing company”?

Mick

Ah yes. Yes indeed. The weekend approaches, so therefore the Stolen Valor gods must once again open the sluicegates of the always full-to-the-brim cesspool of Stolen Valor and flood our grid square with even more phonies.

If we’re lucky, maybe a third phony will appear today in addition to Brunst and Burch so that we can score a hat trick.

Phonies-A-Go-Go for everyone on Team TAH!

Mick

As predicted, Clayton Donoghue from Canada just appeared in a new TAH post, so we’ve got our Stolen Valor hat trick for Friday, sports fans…

ex-OS2

Cocksucker.

HMCS(FMF) ret.

Love the closing line from the SFA letter,

“It is gonna get ugly for this guy”

Well he’ll be a member of an not-so-elite club soon – those that have been kicked out of the SFA!

USMCMSgt(Ret)

Jaguars and Rolls Royces…

Not that I have anything against anyone who owns one, (at least as long as they run and properly maintained) – but having one seems to be a common theme among some folks who are profiled here.

Maybe I’m being too critical.

Bill M

Don’t think so.

Green Thumb

Call VA General Counsel Dick Hipilot at 202-461-4955 and let him know what you think.

This is a publicly available number although you have to look. Those VA attorney turds do not make them known.

If the VA would stop hiring these tools and focus more on hiring doctors, the problem would be sorting itself out.,

Another friggen JAG off lawyer !!!! shocking just shocking !!??? 1 of the 98% that gives the other 2% a bad reputation, much like the politicians in DC or trying to stay or move into the PEOPLES house in DC (Hillary & Obama are 2 of th0se 2%’rs ???????,riiiiiiiiight suuuure..wink, wink!!) sarcasm

Best case, that “charity” has an idiot for a president.

They primarily use CSI/Outsource3000 (formally Community Support Inc) for their fundraising. CSI/Outsource3000 kept 4.6 MM of the 5.1 MM they raised for this “charity” and has been in trouble with around 39 various states and Canada for their fundraising activities.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2015/vt150507d.htm

Worst case, he is a, well you decide.

In 2013 per form 990:
He paid himself 75K in salary for 20 hours a week.
He and the other two officers charged 101K in travel to the charity.
He also gave his brother $1,232 of the charity’s money as a grant.

Did I mention that the Charity pays for 50% of his GMC Yukon that he bought in 2013?

All 4 of these are part of the .5 MM they are claiming as being spent on Vets.

Here is another guy out there that has had this guy on his radar:

http://www.newtoseattle.com/2016/02/28/in-seattle-joel-collins-is-one-really-stupid-charity-computer/

Brown Neck Gaitor

2014: 65K in salary for 30 hours a week.
133,348 in travel for the 3.

There is that Yukon again.

Evidently, there is a FL “office” (read 2nd home) and the charity paid $788 for the generator in addition to the duplicate office set up.

Oh, BTW, Burch’s Jump Certificate states..

It’s time the Stolen Valor Mafia started making these fucktards Google Famous. The VA is festering with grifters, thieves, and racketeers who are the same or worse than Burch. Did you know the VA funds private companies with tax dollars to set up shadow agencies that hire retired flags and VA excecs at grossly inflated salaries to do exactly nothing of value? I know because I worked for one.

I say again, as a healthcare fraud examiner, I’ve become reluctant to even present a fraud case to the VA OIG because 1) they won’t pursue it; and 2) I’m convinced they see it as a primer or how-to guide.

I used to be a die-hard believer in maintaining the VA infrastructure because I had no faith the private sector would care enough to provide for the veterans. Now I’m convince they need to lay waste to the entire VA. Burn. It. Down.

Green Thumb

I could see this assclown replacing Lori Benton as the legal counsel at All-Points Logistics.

This shitbag blows her away. Plus he has experience screwing Veterans while holding, in all probability, an SES position. Phildo-strong!

Looks like another VA attorney turd is about to get promoted.

Look no further than to those shitbags at VISN 19.

Green Thumb

I wonder if Tammy Kennedy would write him a letter of recommendation?

C2Show

Oh snap, working in the office nearby next month!

http://www.disabledveterans.org/2016/05/19/va-attorney-runs-worst-veterans-charity/

Interesting read on Mr. Burch. Further detail about him and his positions in the VA. Apparently, he runs two positions. VA FIOIA Attorney and Homeland Security Director or something like that.

This read though leads to further things and his reach of power in DC.

Green Thumb

A FOIA attorney.

Interesting.

I am sure they will not revisit the numerous cases and requests he has denied. You know, being the whole conflict of interest thing.

As I have repeatedly said, the VA Office of Regional and General Counsels are corrupt and exude criminal behavior.

Green Thumb

I wonder if this turd sucker still has a job.

I called up VA General Counsel and inquired. They got pissed and hung up the phone.

Give them a buzz. It will at least give them something to do.

Green Thumb

Gave them another buzz last week about this turd.

They still get pissed.

This is even after I explained to them they were VA employees and they were obligated to speak with me. Keep in mind there is no litigation or privacy issues at play.

I explained to them that the VA should hire more doctors and less attorneys. And if they do hire more attorneys,at least hire some good ones.

Give it a shot. Clown show but worth the call.

Stress relief.
