Sgt. Kyle Stephens and Spc. Michael Knight saving the world

Kyle Stephens and Michael Knight

According to Tucson News Now, last year, Sergeant Kyle Stephens and Specialist Michael Knight, of the Nevada Army National Guard, were doing some night fishing when they heard a crash and saw a bright blue flash nearby. They ran towards the terrifying sounds and sights and pulled Ronaldo de la Ree from his burning car.

De la Ree didn’t know who saved him that day. He said he had been drinking before he got behind the wheel. He doesn’t remember where he was going and couldn’t remember anything leading up to the crash.

Earlier this year, he learned the identities of his rescuers after reading a Nevada National Guard news release.

De la Ree finally met his heroes in person on Monday at the Army National Guard Heliport at Pinal Air Park.

De la Ree says that he has been sober since the accident, and thanks to Stephens and Knight he has that opportunity to turn his life around.

Kudos to these two young men for doing the right thing.

The side effect is that the drunken driver has stopped drinking, which is a very good thing.

BZ, guys.

Well done Sgt Stephens and Spc Knight. You gave this man a chance to get help. Good luck to Mr. De la Ree.

Now THERE’S a “turn his life around” that I can live with!

Amazing how God puts the right people in your life exactly when you need them.
Two great young men that give faith to us old bastards worried about the state of our country.

OldSoldier54

Yep.

Drunks don’t get scared straight, and he wasn’t even scared — he doesn’t remember the crash, or even the men pulling him out. The two soldiers did the right thing…I just hope they didn’t do it for the wrong person.

The bitter cynicism comes from having incorrigible drunks in the family, and working with a hospital full of them after I grew up. I would like nothing better than to be proven wrong in this, but I’d still yank the driver’s license and make him walk for awhile.

CavScoutCoastie

Not disagreeing with you but I have alcoholics in my family. They can be scared into getting help and starting a program. It doesn’t mean they won’t fall off the wagon but it can give them the desire to at least try.

Pinto Nag

There’s a subtle difference here. ‘Alcoholics’ have a disease but they think more of their families than they do their drug of choice. They actually do try. ‘Drunks’ on the other hand, use what’s wrong with them to their advantage, and think more of their drug of choice than they do their families. They don’t bother.

You have alcoholics. I had drunks. I have sympathy for alcoholics and none at all for drunks.

OldSoldier54

Couldn’t hurt.
