Sean Michael Lovelace; phony veteran
Almost two years ago, Sean Michael Lovelace was arrested when he fired at police from the rooftop of a motel in Roanoke, Virginia. There was some discussion soon after his arrest whether or not he was a veteran. From the Roanoke Times;
Sean Michael Lovelace has struck those who know him as someone who needed help, as a man on the verge of harming himself or others. That much is clear.
What’s less clear is whether Lovelace, the 42-year-old man arrested after Roanoke police say he stood on the roof of the Starlite Motel Wednesday and fired off a rifle shot, needed that help because of prior military service that left him scarred, or because of something else.
“He’s a vet,” said Mark Lawrence, the manager of the Melrose Avenue motel and a self-described friend of Lovelace for several years. “Believe me.”
[…]
Both Ayers and Lawrence said Lovelace spoke of being denied treatment and assistance by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“He also repeatedly said that the VA hospital wouldn’t help him and the only way he would get the help he needed is if he got locked up,” Ayers said.
But Roanoke police spokesman Scott Leamon said investigators have not found any evidence so far that Lovelace served in the military, and Lovelace’s family “has indicated” to police that he isn’t a veteran.
Lawrence and Ayers said that doesn’t match the man they’ve come to know over several years. Lawrence specifically remembered picking up Lovelace from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem after he had received treatment there last year.
Ayers said Lovelace had nightmares about children and babies being killed, which he had said was part of his service abroad. He would drink to silence the dreams, she said.
“He said he couldn’t handle remembering the things he seen when he served and alcohol helped him cope,” Ayers said.
She said Lovelace displayed pins and other items that looked like military memorabilia.
He’s nuts, so that’s all of the credentials that he needs to prove that he’s a veteran. Never mind that his family says that he wasn’t in the military, the guy’s a nut – he”s a vet, believe me. Well, actually, no he’s not, according to the National Personnel Records Center;
Lovelace had been a sex offender and a felon at least since his arrest for sexual battery in 2001. His only service was to the people of Virginia to repay his debt for breaking their laws. He cheated them this time, though. A few months later, after he was indicted for motel thing, Lovelace committed suicide while he was in jail. But that didn’t stop the Roanoke Times from giving life to the rumor that he was a veteran;
Friends, including the Starlite manager, said he repeatedly told them he was a military veteran who was haunted by time he spent in the service. However, Roanoke police spokesman Scott Leamon said that after thoroughly investigating his case, police found no evidence to show that Lovelace was ever in the military.
Lovelace also wasn’t a teacher, a journalist or a city councilman, but they didn’t bother to mention that in the story.

I will give credit where credit is due: he finally he did something positive with his life. He ended it.
Not sure I’d go so far as to say that it was a “positive” outcome, 2/17 Air Cav. But at least it will save the taxpayers in Virginia some coin.
This guy was convicted of aggravated sexual battery which, in Virginia, is sexual abuse of a minor, with one exception. The exception is that the victim be mentally or physically incapacitated. Otherwise, the victim is a minor under 13 or the abuser is a parent, grand parent or step parent and the minor is between 13 and 17. So, yes, in my view he did the world a favor by making his own exit. By the way, he was indicted for two sexual batteries but entered into a plea bargain in which one of the crimes was nolle prossed. He received two years but one was suspended, with probation upon release. There are two things that I know about sex offenders, excluding statutory rapists. The first is that their first arrest for a sex crime is rarely their first sex crime. The second is that their last sex crime is never the one they were arrested for, unless they die immediately thereafter.
Well, you may have a point. Based on that info, he does sound like someone whose . . . absence will significantly improve society.
C’mon, we’ve all heard the phrase “Your whole purpose in life may be to serve as a warning to others.”
Then there’s another famous quote by one of my XO’s “Addition by subtraction”. I agree he probably improved society with his departure.
2/17 well said, my man, well said…
Gee, someone claiming to be a veteran that drinks to “Silence the Dreams”. Yeah, right! My drunken idiot brother in law has used this in the past. Tells people he was a Sergeant in the Marines and he served in Vietnam. Slight problem, never was in the Corps and was 15 when Vietnam ended. He also needs alcohol to “Silence the Dreams”.
Why don’t these “Journalists” do a basic check? John does it all the time, but that would cloud an “Issue” with the truth. <deep cleansing breath"
I use alcohol to “silence the dreams” from bootcamp.
This is what happens the one time Linda should have swallowed.
I vote this to be the best comment this week so far!
Wonder how long until TAH is blamed for his self-murder??
Probably already done.
Fuck ’em and feed ’em fish heads.
One less Sex Offended stealing oxygen, that alone makes me say “Good Riddance”. Those other folks need to wake up and realize they were conned.
This should have been posted in the Feel Good Story section…
“Lovelace also wasn’t a teacher, a journalist or a city councilman, but they didn’t bother to mention that in the story.”
I believe that “journalist” critter went extinct years ago…..
No, the working definition just changed from “one who accurately reports what happened” to “political hack who creates propaganda”.
As someone that’s 37F qualified (PSYOP), I’d say that’s right on target.
He was also a member of the unorganized militia of the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as that of the United States. Unfortunately for him, that wasn’t enough, sheesh, some people’s kids. 🙄
“…Both Ayers and Lawrence said Lovelace spoke of being denied treatment and assistance by the Department of Veterans Affairs…”
So what? VA seems to accepts anybody off the street with a DD-214 that it takes at face value without vetting. Maybe this poser scumbag created his DD-214 using crayons and the VA rejected it. These days, being denied treatment by VA has no more bearing on whether someone’s a genuine vet than anything else that may have occurred…
I can’t believe that non of you noticed who he really is.
He’s the Mandarin from Iron Man
To quote Johnny Ringo, “Uh…Bye.”
It would appear that VA finally got something right.
Hope he didn`t procreate.
He was a Hellofaman, that’s all I can say. Shoulda realized when the V A would not treat him, he could always have gone to a veterinarian. What I want to know is whether or not he had reindeer up on the roof with him?
Now what did alcohol do to him other than make him a mime?
Are you sure this wasn’t a picture of Bob Villa with full beard and shaved head? ‘Course he’d have built the motel before getting up on top of it.
His friend Mark Lawrence who claimed Lovelace “was a vet, believe me”…..is shown to be the manager of the motel from which the rifle was fired. Didn’t Mark once run the “Spank Me, Thank Me Motor Lodge”?
Last but not least, these nightmares about babies and children being killed when he served, my guess is those were Karma revisiting the perv/perp.
Good riddance psycho.
I wonder if it isn’t the kind of Motel that gives you a free night’s stay if you find a dead hooker under the bed?
Only guests who stayed in room # 69 know that fact. Most gave it a whack before reporting the stiff. All said she was a dead f__k.
Turd flushed.
