Heidi Czerwiec, professor, calls 911 on ROTC drills
So, this woman, Heidi Czerwiec, who is an English professor at the University of North Dakota, was at work in her office and she saw two people crossing the sidewalk below in camouflaged uniforms and carrying what looks like a gun. Here, let her tell the story;
I look up from my office computer to see two figures in camo with guns outside my window. My first thought is for my students’ and my safety: I grab my phone, crawl under my desk and call 911. The dispatcher keeps me on the line until someone can see if ROTC is doing maneuvers.
I can barely talk—first, with fear, and then with rage when the dispatcher reports back that yes, in fact, I’ve probably just seen ROTC cadets, though they’re going to send an officer to check because no one has cleared it with them. They thank me for reporting it.
Of course, it’s not going to end there, you know because of triggers and microagressions;
[A university officer] also tells me that ROTC will be doing these exercises for the next couple weeks.
So I reply that I guess I’ll be calling 911 for the next couple weeks—and I will. Every time.
It’s not my job to decide whether people carrying guns at school are an actual threat. It’s my job to teach and to get home to my family.
It’s already highly inappropriate to conduct unnecessary military maneuvers in the middle of the quad. But with school shootings on the increase and tensions at UND running high, it’s especially irresponsible.
I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the first time ever that Czerwiec had seen ROTC cadets on campus. She studied at UNC-Greensboro and at the University of Utah, so I’m sure she’s aware of ROTC, even if she didn’t join in the fun.
According to Campus Reform, UND is going to make a point of telling everyone about the drills on campus, making it a point to personally warn the good professor, but that doesn’t seem to calm her much.
When I taught ROTC, the only things close to weapons that we had were rubber ducks (an inoperable completely rubber M16-looking training aid) for our rope bridge training and some demilitarized M1903s which could not be loaded or fired and were just used for drill and ceremony training.
I hope the University keeps a supply of Depends on hand for the professor.

Ok, I can KIND OF see why she called the first time but if she is going to be butt hurt about the whole thing even after her highers come and face-to-face tell her to stand down then she needs to leave. Her actions can cause people to get hurt or at least she will get charged with abuse of 911.

In case anyone is curious, I got this sent to me earlier:

Thank you for your message.
Much of the information being dispersed on this incident is misleading. I saw two young men with guns outside my office. They were not obviously part of any training, and we had not been notified there would be any training that day. I called 911 to report it in order to protect myself, my students, and my coworkers. 911 was glad that I did, as they had not been notified of training either.
I have nothing against ROTC or its cadets — they are some of my finest students. But in this current climate of school shootings, I’m sure you would agree that having students run across campus with guns while classes are in session is unwise and irresponsible.
When I said I would call 911 again, I was saying that any time I see something suspicious that is not obviously part of a drill, I will call it in. At the university, we are told, “if you see something, say something.” I am doing my job.

That’s a nice response, but it is contrary to the facts. First, the quad is known to be a place where the ROTC drills (not conducts “maneuvers” as she asserts in her letter to the Grand Forks Herald.) If she has not seen ROTC out there drilling before, she has not been alert and watching at all. Secondly, the University says it notified everyone in a email. It also says that email was not as specific or forward as it could be, but it is highly unlikely that she did not get the email. It is more likely that she did not read the email. Third, her letter asserts that “no one had cleared” the exercise with 911. That is quite different than “not notifying” the 911. It is also quite different than a single person not knowing and an entire emergency response group not knowing. Fourth, Czerwiec says “that having students run across campus with guns while classes are in session is unwise and irresponsible.” Which is it? Were the students running or standing outside her office? The statement of “I was saying that any time I see something suspicious that is not obviously part of a drill, I will call it in,” is contrary to what she wrote in the letter to the paper. There she wrote: “He also tells me that ROTC will be doing these exercises for the next couple weeks. So I reply that I guess I’ll be calling 911 for the next couple weeks—and I will. Every time.” Even if the actions of the ROTC is part of a drill known to her, she is still going to call it in to 911. Or maybe not. This is an Associate Professor of English at a university. She seems to be saying her writing is so convoluted and misunderstood that she needs to restate what she meant people to understand because what she said was not what she meant and what she meant is contrary to the facts she gave before. The bottom line is that the woman knows about the exercises and if she… Read more »

This story can’t be true, you can’t get Guns into Gun Free zones, everyone knows that.
Scott Greenfield has a hilarious take on this (some of the comments are pretty funny too):
