Mark Joston; phony hero

The folks at Popular Military posted this video of a fellow who calls himself Mark Joston, a Navy SEAL Rear Admiral at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Of course there is no Mark Joston in the flag officer registry, nor is there anyone by that name with a Silver Star on the Department of Defense’s Valor page. Nor is there anyone by that name with a Navy Cross in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
Some folks think that this Joston fellow is really George Hunley, a former pastor from Louisa, Virginia who made up a story earlier this year about being mugged by a mixed race couple when he was being a Good Samaritan. He claimed that he was shot, but there were no wounds. I have my doubts that this Joston is Hunley – if it is, he’s lost a few hundred pounds this year;

Oh,Goody,Goody.
A chew toy for our Saturday dining.
Another idiot in the making.
I’m just shocked that he gave himself only “rear” admiral rank. Maybe he likes the Rear part of it. Sounds like he’s got other troubles and will be getting some in the Rear in prison real soon too.
When speaking of “rears” is admiral the correct term?
I am a poor benighted army guy …
As I understand it, technically the name for the Naval 1-star and 2-star ranks are “Rear Admiral (Lower Half)” and “Rear Admiral (Upper Half)”.
I have no idea why the older “Commodore” wasn’t retained for the 1-star Naval rank after it was briefly reinstated in the 1980s. I’m not buying the ambiguity argument that I seem to recall for discontinuing that title. Yes, the term “commodore” was traditionally used as the title for a commander of a flotilla or group of ships, regardless of rank – yet the O6 naval rank is “Captain”, as is the commander of a ship (who often is a lower-ranking naval officer for smaller ships). The Navy didn’t change the name of their O6 rank.
Using the “Rear Admiral” for both O7 and O8 apparently is simply naval tradition. It thus doesn’t have to make sense. (smile)
Wasn’t Commodore used as a title of convenience when another Captain was on a ship as a ship can have only one Captain at a time so a visiting Captain was “promoted” and addressed as Commodore while on board
In a nut shell it is a way to get around congress and not having to pay for more O7 job’s. It is still used today for Senior O6 captions that are in charge of Squadrons of all types Sub & surface and Air. They also use the term or title for Senior Captain’s in charge of special groups like EOD, Riverine & Costal Security, Seabee Regiments and NSW Group’s. They get some special pay when in command. When deployed also rate a security detail and command Pennant. They get regular pay after command unless selected for O7.
jonp, NECCSEABEECPO, Otto: understood. Intent of the comment was to wonder why the title Commodore wasn’t retained as the formal title for Navy O7 after its brief re-introduction in the 1980s. The “ambiguity” argument simply doesn’t fly – many ships’ captains are not O6s, yet the Navy still uses the term “Captain” for both, with context making it clear which is intended.
Frankly, I’m thinking it was a prestige thing. The common title “Rear Admiral” is ambiguous, and initially allows lower-half types additional prestige when they/their staffs are dealing with others remotely (much like the short form “Colonel” does for O5 Lieutenant Colonels speaking over the phone to someone who doesn’t know them). There’s really no reason other than naval tradition not to use Commodore instead.
FWIW: the observation about tradition usually attributed, apparently falsely, to Churchill is IMO generally correct.
Hondo I’m with you, I was in for 24yrs. and still do not understand and even asked why sometimes. You are probably correct in the pride thing. The Navy uses the term today to recognize having large commands. The example I have is on the west coast for the EXG Expeditionary Strike group the Commanding officer in charge of the group has to be an O7 pay grade but the East coast they use a O6 and title in all messages and every thing is Commodore. I think it still comes back to the congress thing and money. They can justify by not promoting a senior O6 and still give him respect, a little extra pay and large command equal to a O7 in command.
It’s the Navy man that’s all I can say.
Commodore is still used as an honorific title for a Captain that commands multiple commands, ships, etc. For example, the SEAL O-6 Captain commanding multiple SEAL Teams would be called or addressed as Commodore while he is in command. Upon changing duties or retirement, the title does not confer.
Thought I had read that Commodore is only a wartime rank and that otherwise you had the RAUH/RALH. And that even if it’s an ensign in permanent independent command of a dinghy he’s is the ‘Captain’ on board? Is it the difference between Captain Smith and the Captain, LTCDR Smith? Thank Good the Army stuff is so simple and straightforward – I wouldn’t have been smart enough to understand the Navy.
Well Dave depends on what war is. I think we have been in a conflict of some sort starting back in 2001. I have been under the command of a Commodore every command I have been at so I think some one would say we at war or something. Both Seabee regiments have Commodores and NSW’s also EOD Groups and so on. Also worked For Commodore PHIBRON8 on a special task force in South & Central America 2007-2008. Have an Award signed by him and it has Commander and Commodore on it. So yes the Navy still uses it and like I said they have a pennant, and rate a Security Detail Deployed.
He’s getting ready for prison
So, when does he get appointed to the Board Of Directors at All Points Logistics?
Rear Admiral? Meh, more like a wino’s Rear ADMIRER or REAR ASSMONKEY!! Maybe a rear ASSHAT as well? I wonder how soon The Hair®™ will show up and call him on his bullshit? Mark Joston(?) the rear assmonkey is getting some attention either way, I wonder what he’s really done in the past, fry cook? Janitor? He looks like he’s never met a jelly doughnut he didn’t like, maybe he needs a striped uniform so folks can tell if he’s walking or rolling down the street, ENJOY your fame, Tubbles the rear assclown!!
Any body want to get some eye strain and see if his fruit salad is in correct order with what would appear to be correct devices? I get the feeling that at least from the placement of a few ribbons like the Kuwait Liberation Medal he may have a working knowledge of order of precedence.
No, He is missing one because two that he has he would have one more. He has Kuwait Liberation Kuwait and Kuwait Lib Saudi Arabia but he does not have and should have Southwest Asia Service medal with two Bronze Stars. I would also question his Battle E look’s like 5. I don’t know how often teams receive them because most of their attachments are with SOCM and JSOC.
Excellent, brief interview. At the end, the interviewer, obviously a Veteran says, “Thank you, sir. Appreciate it.”
Translated: “Asshole. Your ass is grass and my name is Toro, MF’er.”
I’ve read the other stories at the link (including the one in which his house burned down) and I’m pretty sure it’s the same guy. Not 100% sure, but pretty darn sure. Same face, same voice. He’s lost some weight, and the blond dye-job, but I think it’s the same guy. His name tag even says “Hunley”. Smart guy: wears his real name on his uniform and then gives a fake name to the guy who questions him. I suspect that Hunley’s not all there.
Yup! His nametag in the video reads “Hunley”.
“G. H. Hunley II”
Just noticed that one of the commenters at Popular Military indicates that he’s a family member and the guy is mentally ill. Another commenter purports to be law enforcement in Hunley’s neck of the woods. We may not have heard the last of this one.
His “relative” comes off as an enabling bag o’ douche. He is insulting the cop from the area who wants to know more about the story.
My guess is that this bucket of toad snot has a history of pulling stupid shit. The mystery fire that destroyed his house then shooting himself and making up a story about a black man assaulting him makes him a threat IMO.
He is trying to play the Mentally Off bit. Being a pathological liar is a charactor flaw more than a mental issue.

I think a couple of the ribbons you can’t identify are:
AF Basic Military Training Instructor Ribbon
Berlin Airlift Medal
Domo arigato, Claw…
Yeah, there isn’t anything even better than claiming a medal (Berlin Airlift) for an event that occurred 13 years before you were even born.
Technically, the name of the award is the Medal for Humane Action. It was awarded for performing 120 days of duty withing the geographical AOR (varying sources have slightly different definitions of the precise limits of the AOR) ISO the Berlin Airlift between 26 June 1948 and 30 September 1949. In general, anyone eligible for the MHA also qualified for the Army of Occupation Medal/Navy Occupation Service Medal w/Berlin Device – a miniature replica of a C-54, to be affixed to the center of the individual’s occupation medal ribbon with nose of aircraft pointing roughly NNW from the viewer’s perspective (up=N).
Not nitpicking, Claw. But regarding this decoration, I have strong personal reasons for the wanting info here about the award to be as complete and accurate as possible.
That’s because I knew a man who earned that particular pair of awards quite well. He was one of the individuals discussed here.
Roger. Thank You. Will do better next time,OK?
Smile. Out.
I wonder how much money and time he spent putting all of that together? Oh well, it looks like this shenanigan will get him all the attention he wants AND MORE!!

More than what this ass clown deserves
Dude is a REAL DEAL “Call of Booty – Anal Buttsekks Warrior” (Sooper Sekrit Skwirrl Butt Ops Missions expansion pack)
Oh stop it I can barely control my laughing.
Senior, I believe his E is cluster for 5 Battle E’s and all that shit he is missing Southwest Asia Service with two Bronze Stars. What a dumb ass.
“Hello Medals of America? I’d like to order EVERYTHING”. Thanks
That would be correct, Senior Chief.
It’s hard for a command to be awarded one. Try having five in a career.
Well that is why it looked like the five award cluster. I hate to say it but I’m that guy I have 5. But I’m a Seabee and we only have so many Battalions if you do 3 in a 24 year period there is a good chance to get 5. I didn’t think Teams got them not sure. I know CSST and CSSD do not.
Those Battle E’s , when a sailor earns them while on crew for different ships does he wear more than one ribbon ? Saw a guy once who whole bottom rack had 4 battle E Ribbons.
Ships,Squadrons and Seabee Battlions are awrded for exelants during a cycle of performance and traning. If you are active or in active status at any time during this cycle you will be authorized to have a Battle E. The first award is ribbon and silver E with another E for second and third with the 4th being E Wreathed like the one he has above. The 4th is the last one you will place on the ribbon any other one just gets put in your record.
Nope. Not authorized.
I have three from two different commands, one ribbon.
Well, I don’t see any VN-era ribbons. You’d think he’d at least include those, especially with the Berlin Airlift thingy.
I am disappointed by this time-traveling bimbo.
Well, considering he’s trying to pimp himself off as career enlisted prior to going O-gang, just the general math puts him at being in at least his early 60’s, if not significantly older.
Figure AT LEAST 25-30 years to make RADM, add the 20 years enlisted, yeah, not seeing it here either.
In fact, if memory serves, LDO has a 16 year max, but Warrant applicants can have up to 24 years of service.
Yeah, this assclown is jacked up about 83 ways from last week.
But the pilot wings, those are a nice touch too.
SEA: yeah, the timeline is problematic. It might be theoretically possible with a direct commission to a fairly senior rank – but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting to see that. Ever.
Is a name tag worn on this uniform by an authentic Rear Admiral?
I went to the Navy web site and looked some pictures of the Rear Admirals and didn’t see a name tag on any of them wearing this uniform.
I’m just curious. In the Air Force name tags are worn on service dress; except for the “the” officers, e.g. the AF Surgeon General, the AF JAG, etc and the like. Years ago I heard the AF JAG explain it to someone (not me) too dumb to keep his mouth shut. The JAG said if you see a JAG emblem on a Lt Gen, it’s me and you should know who I am.
No, we do not use name tags on that uniform only working whites (officers and Chief Petty Officers)and Kakis. E6 and below have a working uniform all year and have name tag on them.
Technically, nametags are optional items for the SDB and SDW (choker) coats but like Chief said, I’ve never seen anybody actually wear it with those uniforms. Typically it’s khakis (same shirt as the service uniform for E6 and below) and summer whites only…
Yes, it is a option but usually set by command depending on special condition and event’s. So for most part if you are not told to have them on then do not. They are not a requirement.
The UN Mission in Haiti is a nice addition to his medallic fuckery (TM)… The dude is junk!
Wow, they really go for all of the marbles, don’t they?
Dude when “balls deep” on this… and from the looks of his legal issies, I would hope that Bubba, Thor Julio and “Mr. Tiny” go “balls deep” on him if he’s put in the county “pound him in the ass” slammer
The USMC blogger / cartoonist Maximillian Uriarte once pointed out that the problem with valor thieves is that they steal too much valor to be believable. He went on to point out that while claims to humdrum service can be believed, it’s when the posers start claiming stuff like Force Recon or SEAL Team Six that the bulldust flags start going up. Source: http://terminallance.com/2015/03/17/terminal-lance-370-stealing-the-valor/
I suspect that Uriarte would agree that this poser stole too much valor and that’s what got him nailed. I mean, multiple Navy Crosses? Who does he think he is, Chesty Puller?
Yeah, just being an Admiral ain’t good enough for him.
Gotta be a SEAL too.
The real question, which all of you have missed is this: Can he cook?
Good question.
The arrest warrant from February of this year said he weighed 385 pounds, but he sure seems to be a lot slimmer than that in the video.
I wonder if since his arrest the “church ladies” of his congregation stopped feeding him six meals a day or if the kitchen stove broke?
Either way, I hope he’s a good cook. I’m looking forward to having some sticky bums reappear on the menu.
I don’t like seeing this kind of shit posted. This is a half assed job of outing some guy with no background work done other than a check on a few data base records.
The guy is obviously full of shit. News flash, so are most of the morons at Liberty University. They have fossils in the lobby that prove the world is only 8,000 years old. If they buy into that bullshit they will believe anything.
How about these people do some God Damn homework on a guy before they rush to get their 5 minutes of fame. Watch what car the guy gets into and get the plate number, you dont have to be Holmes or Watson to get that much.
Do a FOIA request on the guy, always ask for their assignments, awards, schools, and combat history pages. If the clerk got laid this month you might get something half ass accurate back. Do a criminal background on the guy. Try Google at least. If you wont do a minimum of research on someone stay the fuck out of it.
I thought the guy in the video did a good job. Now how about a little more work effort than just posting that shit.
Seriously, this cell phone commando bullshit is unsat. I got something sent to be because a guy was wearing an EGA. Or I see someone getting confronted for wearing cammies, seriously?
This kind of nonsense does our cause no good. It is a matter of time before more of these clowns seeking some net fame with a video get it wrong.
Rear Admiral whoever here can kiss my ass. So can the dipshits that posted the initial article.
Dave I get what you’re saying about jumping the gun. And I don’t necessarily support getting in someone’s face with a cell phone camera. But sometimes the phony is so ridiculous I don’t think we need to wait for the FOIA request. In this case I think the people who posted the video did reach out to Don Shipley to verify the SEAL claim. The first time I saw the video was when Don shared it on his personal Facebook page. So if I see someone who Shipley has already confirmed is a phony Navy SEAL, and that same person is claiming two Navy Crosses that aren’t on any of the established lists…..I really don’t think there is anything a FOIA request is going to tell me that I don’t already know.
I’m just curious who the flying fuck ever did 15+ (more like 20+) years enlisted and then hung around long enough to be a 2-star admiral?
Memo to fat fuck: do you even math, bro? Even Bernath can’t defend your shit, but I’d love to see him try.
And unless my old eyes deceive me, he’s wearing a POW Medal on there too.
Fuck that guy.
Fuck. That. Guy.
Looks like he weaseled out of charges by playing the crazy card…

A “Phildoesque” dude, indeed.
Again. Why can’t it ever be me that has the opportunity and child-like joy of running into one of these douche-bags in person. Why?
We are getting close to Veterans Day . I am sure it will happen for you
Be a good time to go to Vegas on that one.
Yep. Hang around any Golden Corral on Veteran’s Day and I’d guess you’ve got a 50/50 chance of seeing one or more obvious fakers. Or any other place offering free meals/substantial discounts to vets, for that matter.
Some people will sell their integrity for a pittance.
Well, I noticed in the blond-beach bum photo, he’s wearing a Star Trek color-block UFP officer’s jacket, so he’s obviously a time traveler.
I’d ask for his Starfleet records, too.
I imagine the are under lock and key at All-Points Logistics.
It’s beginning to look as though posers are trying to out medal each other. What’s next? Sooner or later some retard is going to claim he was the POTUS at one time, and we just forgot to realize it.
