Army likes Ike
Remember in high school when you jokingly voted for ugly chick to be the homecoming queen? Apparently, 8,000 people did that when the Sergeant Major of the Army invited them to vote for future uniform changes. That’s about how many voted for the Ike Jacket, according to the Army Times. Only about 10% of the folks who were polled responded.
I don’t think that the fatties are going to like the way they look in that jacket. They also want to make the service cap (bus driver hat) for SFCs and above part of the Army Service Uniform. And a uni-sex drill sergeant campaign hat, ditching the female drill sergeant hat.
There’s going to be another whack at the voting, so don’t screw this up again, folks.

Bingo. Unless an individual is rather thin, a short-waisted coat usually does NOT look particularly good when worn. By either gender.
Add this ‘Ike’ jacket to the service cap and it finishes the transformation to a bus drivers uniform.
Absolutely!
And the class B like a state trooper.
Once upon a time, we used to dress like victorius armies of the time. (I.E. Prussia (!) or France (!!)) Nowadays, I’m thinking we just wanna look nonthreatening, like a crossing guard, perhaps?
Summer or Winter Greens, or khakis, when I was “IN”.
I have my fathers Ike jacket. It still has the banana boat on the sleeve and a movie schedule from 1951 on Fort Sherman Panama.
The Ike jacket will not look good on anyone unless it has an elastic waistband and shoulder pads, and does NOT emphasize bad posture.
On top of that, it’s another waste of tax money on something that will not last.
If it looks that bad on the model, just think what it will look like on Joe.
Can wait to see if on these warriors

I’m sorry I couldn’t resist….
Kinda what I was going for in the jpgs above.
I know my friend, it’s why I couldn’t resist…hehe
And to think, just a couple years ago we finally rid ourselves of the green uniform. I guess its time to come up with a new uniform to wear.
Who gives a rat fuck? Honestly? Soldiers are getting shown the door for any and every reason because “the budget’s being cut” but we’re worried about a uniform. We can’t afford to do training we need to because there’s no money for ammunition, training resources, etc., oh but you know? Lets come up with more uniform pieces.
The SMA and CSA should be standing in the capitol building everyday calling out congressional members to rescind the force reduction rubbish, along with sequestration that only seems to be affecting DoD drastically (I know, shocker!).
What was wrong the the khaki Class B’s and green Class A’s? Having alternate dress blues for really special occassions was just fine. ASU’s are one of the worst choices ever made – especially the white shirt.
Yeah, the Army is having budget problems so let’s spend millions on another uniform change. Why not throw in a few more gratuitous ribbons and medals while you’re at it? PVT Snuffy needs more self-esteem.
I remember the pickle suit days when we would show up for morning formation, take off our shirts, do a left face, and commence the BN daily run boots and all. Damn, I’m getting old…
The Khaki class Bs were the best looking uniform. IMO
I wore the Khaki Class B uniform from Easter to Labor Day, (or some other fall holiday), and as a paratrooper, it looked damned sharp with bloused trousers over Corcorans, and a cunt cap with Glider patch, (and a Flight jacket on cool days). AG-44 Winter uniform with the long jacket wasn’t comfortable while sitting, to me.
“What was wrong the the khaki Class B’s”
Aside from the fact that they wrinkled and creased as soon as you put them on?
“…daily run boots and all.”
And nobody dropped out with injuries like shin splints. Ah, those were the days of leather boots and iron men.
Amen, brother. The good I’m days kinda sucked.
LoL
Just to clarify, IF the Ike Jacket is adopted, it is going to be an optional purchased item only and it will only be worn with the Class B ASU uniform when needed. It is not part of the Class A and will not replace the current Class A ASU jacket.
Personally I like it. And if adopted, I will be buying one.
Also, the service cap is already a mandatory item for officers and an optional one for NCOs. If the change is mandated, it is only going to affect E-7 through E-9 and most of those personnel will already have it anyway.
I made one for a StarTrek convention. I still have it. I got the pattern from Vogue Patterns. It has enough room in it for a rib-knit turtleneck sweater and is comfortable with a lightweight, short-sleeved cotton camp shirt in the spring and summer. If I put standard shoulder pads in it, I can wear it just about anywhere.
Maybe what the Army should do is give people the cash to go buy fabric and get the pattern companies like Vogue Patterns to issue military uniform patterns. Then the kids can take all of that to a tailor, get it done right and it will fit properly, and look good even on someone like Hoss.
Yeah, I’m tired of my tax money being wasted on crap like this, when the real issues are being ignored.
I am retired Air Force and we had our share of fashion disasters (thank you Merrill McPeak). But c’mon Army, just go back to green. That white shirt, neon blue slacks with a stripe crap has got to go. The old way worked fine for years – the Air Force was/is blue; the Army was green; the Navy whatever color it was before/after Labor Day. As for the Marines, they can wear just about anything and make it look good.
To be fair, the Army has worn a Blue uniform since the Revolution. It was only since WW1 that we started wearing Green and Khaki.
You mean this Arby?
Oh and FUCK YOU MERRILL McPEAK!!
http://www.sandysherbs.com/Misc/AirForceUniform.jpg
Holy Jumpin’ Jehosophot!
THAT is hilarious!
The male officer looks like “Sky Marshall Bill” “Hey neighbor! are those composite aluminum ailerons? Lemme show you sumthin!”
ChipNASA says: Oh and FUCK YOU MERRILL McPEAK!!
Hi. I’m Mike Kozlowski, and I approve the shiat outta this message.
Oh, and fu@k you, McPeak.
Mike
I want to see the two-piece washable summer light blues return for women’s summer service uniform. That looked good on just about everybody.
Good god. Big Army loves pissing money away. They’re always fucking with the uniforms. Maybe that jacket will look good on the new transgender soldiers.
The Army needs to abolish their uniform board, at least as far as dress uniforms go. The ASU is an embarrassment.
While I liked the Army Green uniform I think the best uniform the Army ever had was the WWII uniform (not the ike, the one with the 4 pocket coat and the “soft” overseas cap.) WWII-era officers also looked very sharp in their “pinks and greens” (although I don’t like the idea of officers and enlisted having different uniforms – that was one of the few smart decisions the post-WWII uniform board made.)
Two observations about the Marines:
1. They haven’t made any major changes to their dress uniforms in what, 65 years? and
2. They are generally acknowledged by impartial observers to have the best looking dress uniforms.
Hmmm…could it be that those two things are related?
I’m an Army Vet, and I have to admit that I ENVY THE USMC when it comes to Dress Uniforms, they found out what worked and LEFT IT ALONE while the U.S. Army tries to “fix” everything until it’s FUBAR!!
Amen. The Pinks and Greens were not only a good looking uniform it was very comfortable. The light weight wool gaberdine wore like iron but was soft and supple. Enlisted uniforms of the time looked like they were made of army blankets.
You actually hit the nail on the head there. The major reason why the Army’s uniforms have looked like crap for 35+ years doesn’t have so much to do with the style or cut, as much as it had to do with the materials.
Unlike the Army, the Marines have not only maintained the style, but they have been very successful in keeping better looking/wearing natural fibers in the uniform (despite the higher cost).
PS: That “Ike jacket” will make soldiers look like a rent-a-cop at a shopping mall. Good going!
The Ike jacket was one thing. This looks like a waiter’s jacket. Oh, wait a minute…
More uniform changes? Just what is needed right now. Thanks to the SMA for making it his number one priority.
I’m sure that a recently featured in Facebook photos CW3 Corps level PBO would look absolutely fabulous in a newfangled Ike jacket.
Although black socks for the PT uniform sounds OK.
The black socks would look great with the PT uniform if the footgear was changed to Crocs.
Black socks with Crocs! OH YEAH!! 😀
Just think of all the Round Ranger type posers in it! EYE BLEACH!!!
(BTW: are the sleeves too short on the model?)
Just somebody on the outside looking in, but Army uniforms looked good in 1944. Today? Uh…I’ll just keep that opinion to myself.
If I can afford it, I’ll buy one to wear with my kilt.
It’s the perfect size and style for combining with a kilt.
When I was a sophomore at Stephen F. Austin High School in El Paso, Texas, my R.O.T.C. uniform was an olive drab Eisenhower-style uniform, with khaki for drilling in hot weather.
We drilled with the M-1 Garand rifle.
For the Military Ball, the Eisenhower uniform was worn with a white shirt and black bow tie.
Back in those days, there were no girls in R.O.T.C.
Girls had their own high school military organization, known as, “Sponsors”, with an Army green WAC uniform.
I have no idea what Sponsors did.
When wearing that new “Ike” jacket with a kilt, a belt, holding a sword and dirk, would be buckled around the middle, and a sporran would hang from in front.
Decorations would be worn, and a plaid with a clan badge would drape from the left shoulder.
Ah now tthe “Snowflake generation” is allowed to vote on what they want. Very nice!
Loved the actual Ike jacket, hate this.
That said, this will really substitute for the wind breaker for most. Don’t know if any of you spend time around soldiers in the current Class B with windbreaker, but it is by far the silliest looking uniform outside of a cosplay convention that you will ever see.
Getting rid of the greens was the dumbest decision we’ve made since the beret. We should have kept the jacket and pants and dropped the lime green shirt in favor of brown or khaki
Last December the wife and I went to a “1940’s/50’s Ball” at the old Lowry AFB in Denver. It was well attended and I’d say at least a good 3rd of the people were there in “period” uniforms including me (I went as as a Post-Korean war era paratrooper, in khakis) and I was struck by how sharp the uniforms from that period looked compared to the ones we have now.
My sympathies army guys. It looks like something a fancy waiter or a doorman would wear. Was there a problem with the greens?
Sharpest US Army uniform I ever saw on my Dad was pinks with the Ike jacket. Yeah, those long legs of his perhaps made the difference, but he also said that having his uniform tailored to fit him properly was a necessity.
Seems like he had folks in his command who were on the bulky side and short who also managed to good wearing it. This pic just looks ridiculous.
We also need to stop all the nonsense with the headgear and just go back to the simple, basic Shako.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shako
😀
I second that.
A Shako can be used as a barrel/tube swab in a pinch.
It works for tube artillery, mortars, tank barrels, etc. The list is endless.
Nah, back to the “American pickelhaube” as worn in the 1880s, with branch of service plume.
Then we could do light opera on the side.
Think “Prisoner of Zenda”.
Personally, I’d rather wear a (ahem) garrison cap than that friggin’ beret. My .02, not adjusted for inflation.
seems like every day there’s some new stupidity that makes me stop and think “Maybe 30 years is enough. Put in the retirement papers today.”
Imo, anyone in any of the services who even suggests that another penny should be spent in changing or adding to any piece or part of the or a uniform should be kicked out of the service as a boot private with no remainder of perks or privileges of any kind or sort.
Good thing you aren’t in charge.
So it looks like officers get post retirement jobs at Lockheed-Martin and enlisted go to work for Marlow-White, Propper and Ranger Joe’s when they retire…..
Update the uniform of 1915 to modern materials, and let’s get back to looking like Soldiers.
At the very least, we can stand alongside any Marine and not feel silly 🙂
