John Russel Houser; another gun free zone killer

| July 24, 2015

Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson

Two women. Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson, were murdered last night at a theater in Lafayette, Louisiana by a career criminal, John Russel Houser during a showing of “Trainwreck”. According to eyewitnesses, he sat quietly through about 20 minutes of the movie and then stood up and began blasting away at the approximately one hundred movie goers. A quick-thinking employee heard the shots and pulled the fire alarm evacuating the theaters. When police arrived, Houser tried to blend in with the crowd and when that plan fell apart, he killed himself – which is what he should have done first.

According to Yahoo News, the 59-year-old was living in a hotel room where police found wigs and glasses that he could use as a disguise. His ex-wife says that he was nutty and that she had removed all of the firearms from their home out of fear.

Houser had been arrested several times from 10 to 15 years ago on various charges, including arson, selling alcohol to a minor and speeding, according to the AP.

Jim Mustian, a journalist for the New Orleans Advocate, citing a local sheriff, said that Houser was denied a pistol permit in 2006 in Russell County, Ala.

Of course, he was also an adherent to “Tea Party-radical Republican views”, but he also embraced “fascist and neo-Nazi ideologies” according to research from the SPLC. He once expressed an admiration for Adolph Hitler.

Elsewhere, on the U.S. Message Board, a political discussion forum, he wrote, “Hitler accomplished far more than any other through ‘pragmatically forming.'”

Yeah, I don’t know what that means, but Houser was nuts, so who cares?

But, I guess we need to find out why these career criminals still buy weapons when everyone knows that’s illegal…and then they commit crimes, which are also illegal. When are they going to start respecting our “gun free zones” like the Grand Theater in Lafayette, Louisiana? Don’t they know that gun free zones mean that they can’t take their guns in there? If only the government could write laws that the criminals respect.

Russell County, AL is right across the river from Fort Benning. We should hope this sorry assed loser isn’t ex-Army. The liberal media would love that.

Smitty

He is a Westboro fan, but you already sated nuts

Hondo

This guy sounds like a true whack-job.

He also seems to have been a former bar owner for brief periods of time – one in La Grange, and another in the Columbus area. He also seems to have been a “doomsday type”, and didn’t seem to much like America today.

Ex-PH2

He has ‘a mind’? I have to dispute that idea. More like a vacant gourd.

UpNorth

If it wasn’t a vacant gourd before, I’d bet it was right after he pulled the trigger for the last time.

NR Pax

Airborne PTSD. It’s been known to happen.

Ex-PH2

I hope it’s not infectious. I haven’t had my cat vaccinated for that.

Bill M

I think my cats are immune to the effects of that vaccine. They’re both nuttier than I am.

Dave Hardin

Mayci, Jillian, I am sorry. I wish I could have been there for you. I might have made a difference.

To those of you who have a carry permit and do not carry a weapon, shame on you. I could never live with myself if I had been in that theater and did nothing.

Running for an exit is not in my constitution.

Every day I find people with the right to carry a weapon who do not. Sickens me.

A Proud Infidel®™

Ditto that. These days, a concealed weapon is something you shouldn’t leave home without, and as for businesses that display “No Firearms” signs, they’re not getting any business from me. I find the “No Open Carry” places tolerable, but the former? Fuck ’em!

Pinto Nag

I have a concealed carry permit, and yes, I have some training for concealed carry — but nothing I’ve been taught would make me effective in a dark room full of running, frightened people with an active shooter on the loose. If you have that kind of training, more power to you. I don’t, and I refuse to be ‘shamed’ because I know my limitations.

A Proud Infidel®™

I’ve had my fair share of training and range time, and I love spending an afternoon burning powder and sending lead downrange. I’m also always ready and willing to learn more, there’s nothing wrong with that, and just having a firearm on you can be enough to keep a would-be attacker at bay. Knowing how and when to use your weapon is an issue, firing among an already panicked crowd can be a huge mistake, but having it with you going back to your car can be a good thing.

CAARNG 68W

Like Aurora, a flashlight is always an ideal weapon accessory. Or weapon in itself.

BmrSnr991

I disagree. I’d bet you’re much more prepared than you give yourself credit for. The proper response would not be to fire a head shot across the theater with people running around. Instead, charge toward the threat and eliminate once the opportunity becomes available within your skill set. The highest probability is the threat would retreat or commit suicide based on the reaction of prior shooters.

However, it takes a unique brand of crazy or brave to charge toward the threat and there is nothing wrong with being a good witness either. It’s good to know your limits, but don’t sell yourself short either.

I have a permit recognized in 30-some states, except the one I happen to live in. I will carry in MD when I deem it prudent, but its a calculated risk. I generally don’t frequent stupid places, where stupid people are, doing stupid things.
So I avoid the stupid prizes.
When in the afore-mentioned 30-ish states, I carry concealed all the time.

Ex-PH2

In something like this, the roomful of people will panic and cram against each other to get out. There is also the possibility that, as the newspaper said, he tried to blend in with the crowd, so someone with a visible weapon would immediately be suspected, however good his intentions might be.

The smarter thing to do is use a small flashlight – I have one on a key chain – to locate the bastard and try to distract him AND maybe take him down physically, and then sit on him until the LEOs arrive.

You do NOT want to be the one singled out as the suspect in this atmosphere of timidity and fear, no matter how good your intentions may be.

Dave Hardin

I do not know exactly what I would have done. There are countless scenarios that could be played out.

What I do know to be a fact is; If I was armed I would have had a CHOICE. I can live with choosing not to pull my weapon for any number of reasons, I can not live with watching those two be murdered while I did nothing.

I would hope his ass would have tried to blend into the crowd next to me, I would have unblended his ass.

I wonder how many, if any, had a license to carry in that building and did not have a weapon on them. They made sure they did not have a choice to draw a weapon and save the lives of those girls.

I might not have drawn mine, I might not have been able to stop it, I hope I am never in a position to have to make that call. If I ever am, I will make sure I have a choice.

I would much rather die in a pool of my own blood than a puddle of my own piss.

Semper Fi.

Joe Williams

I am with you Dave. I tend to forget things due to health problems like leave my pistol in my car in Gun Free Zones. I have solved the bad lighting problem by adding a lazer

Hondo

Looks like Houser was an angry flake of epic proportions who had alienated his own family. And he had also been licensed to practice law (or maybe not; other sources say he’d never taken the bar exam and was just implying he was a lawyer by using his JD degree title) after attending a questionable law school.

Just an observation. Any resemblance to other persons living or dead is 100% coincidental.

Poetrooper

“Any resemblance to other persons living or dead is 100% coincidental.”

Since you brought it up Hondo, in some of his pics he does kinda resemble that twit, Ol’ Shep Smith, on FOX News.

AW1Ed

Fox news reported he was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital by a judge, for being a danger to himself and others. This alone would bar him from *legally* purchasing a firearm.
See Form 4473, para 11f:
“Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective…”

Common Sense

The police are reporting that he LEGALLY purchased the gun at a pawnshop in Arizona last year:

http://news.yahoo.com/police-3-killed-movie-theater-shooting-including-gunman-104047431.html

So much for the questions on the form I guess.

Hondo

What I’ve read was unclear regarding whether Houser was committed or not.

If he was ever formally involuntarily committed to a mental institution, he would have had to have falsified the form to purchase a firearm. However, if he merely was ordered to undergo a mental exam and was found to be sane – or if he received a restraining order and his guns were temporarily placed in police custody for a while, but the restraining order had expired – then he’d be eligible to purchase another. Neither of those qualifies as being found “mentally defective” or having been “involuntarily committed”.

There’s also the issue of whether or not any involuntary commitment was ever reported to NICS. If it wasn’t, there’s no way that NICS would be able to flag him.

AW1Ed

Here you go, Hondo.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/lafayette-louisiana-theater-gunman-threatened-family-involuntarily-committed/story?id=32660209
“The gunman who opened fire inside a packed movie theater in Louisiana Thursday night allegedly threatened his family and was involuntarily committed to a hospital in Georgia seven years ago, according to documents filed in court.”
So he falsified the 4413- a felony in itself, and Feds missed him in the background check.

The Other Whitey

So he lied on his 4473, and NICS never flagged him? Color me shocked.

Anybody else seeing a pattern with shitbags slipping through the cracks while the Feds just shrug? What’s that proverb? “Once is an accident, twice is coincidence, three times is…”

A Proud Infidel®™

WHAT? You mean that the Government dropped the ball and let us down? PERISH THE THOUGHT!! /SARC

UpNorth

The Regime just doesn’t have the time, or inclination, apparently, to prosecute those people who falsify their responses on the 4473. According to the VP, at least.
“This came out during a meeting between Vice President Joe Biden and Jim Baker of the National Rifle Association. According to an interview that Baker gave with the Daily Caller, he said that Biden told him, “regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply don’t have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately.”

GDContractor

I have been railing about this for some time. They have no time or manpower to enforce existing law, but they have the resources to try to run a fucked up op like Fast & Furious. No accountability.

Ex-PH2

Oh, I get it – if you’re NOT crazy or HAVE NOT been hit with an arrest, conviction, etc., you CAN’T buy a gun legally. It’s only wackos like this jackass who can do that.

Now I understand.

Skippy

Well again we see how well these Gun-Free Zones work. NOT ! ! ! !

Roger in Republic

They work exactly opposite as the were intended. They are intended to keep people from bringing guns in and all they do is encourage bad actors to bring their tools to work. Screw the Libtards and their “free fire killing zones”. What do the gun free zone owners use as a defense when the wrongful death suites are filed? “We secured the scene with colorful signs”? I see a lot of money in a lot of peoples futures.

OWB

I totally support business owners’ right to decide if their property should or should not be “gun free.” It’s their exclusive decision to make.

Actually, I appreciate it when they post it prominently. I avoid “gun free” places simply because there is a greater likelihood of violence there than in other places.

But thanks so much, lefties, for dumping all the crazies out on the street and making it almost impossible to put truly insane people in controlled environments where they belong.

Hondo

Yep. Those with bleeding hearts often end up with bloody hands.

Jordan Rott

Criminals don’t follow the laws?

David

Pretty girls, friendly faces.

I wish these assholes would learn that the correct way to do this is a) acquire gun b) kill self c) kill random others. Would sure solve a lot of problems.

Waiting for the national call to enact gun-control legislation which would have done precisely nothing to prevent or stop this in three, two, one….

Ex-PH2

Well, they are both white girls so I doubt we’ll hear anything at all.

MarkFilgerleski

John Russel Houser is a murderer. John Russel Houser is a Tea Party member. John Russel Houser is a Tea Party member and murderer. All Tea Party members are murderers.

Pretty simple liberal logic!

Ron Ruggieri

The deranged killer Houser ” was nuts so who cares “. Our mental health system stinks. Very few mental health professionals have the backbone to decry that miserable failure called ” de-institutionalization.
Still there is also a political lesson here. In the ruined Germany of the 1920s it was the ruined middle class that was more inclined to Hitler’s Nazism than any other group.
America today is cracking up in more ways than one. American capitalism is as insane as these mass killer-suicides we read about every week now.
I recommend we listen to ” socialist ” Bernie Sanders before other voices -on the far right-grow even louder and more hysterical.

Devtun

Took a wrong turn at Albuquerque…not a lot of fans of windbag BS Bernie Sanders here.

11B-Mailclerk

Having killed ~100 million people in the 20th century, the Socialists want one more chance to “get it right” with “the right people in charge” and “we really haven’t tried true (whatever) yet”

(spit)

No thanks. Go bark somewhere else, moonbat.

Ex-PH2

American capitalism is what provides jobs in this country, ron you moronic midget-brained mullion.

Or did you forget that socialism is what bankrupted the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and most recently, the socialist government of Greece which has defaulted on its debt?

You know, ron, short-term memory loss in someone as young as you may (not) be is NOT a good sign. What did you do 15 minutes ago? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

And there’s no cure for that, either. Too bad. So sad.

The Other Whitey

Comrade Sanders? Yeah, no. Sorry, Ronnie, but you can kindly fuck off and die.

A Proud Infidel®™

“The main problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples’ money.” – Lady Margaret Thatcher

Just look at Greece, the former USSR, Cuba, and China, you shit-for-brained candyassed pus-nuts wino-blowing WUSS!

B Woodman

“There’s a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.”

Such is the perfect reason to disobey such immoral regulations (not laws) and carry concealed into movie theaters.
Even if you can’t shoot at the shooter because of panicked people scurrying everywhere, you can shoot up into the ceiling, if nowhere else, and distract the asshat. After that, patience will be rewarded.

“Fortune favors the prepared mind.”

BmrSnr991

I find it sad that I feel I must take my weapon with me to the movies, even when taking my kids to see the Minions the other day. As far as the “No Firearms” policies, my particular carry allows me to ignore those ridiculous signs which only heightens my agitation because I know it draws attention of nut jobs like the movie theater shooters. I’m waiting for the onslaught of cries from liberals who demand no guns for anyone. Criminals will willingly turn in their weapons because they’ve demonstrated their willingness to comply with all the other laws on guns (j/k). The only think I advocate for is a background check on private party sales, other than that the more the merrier.

FatCircles0311

Had to disarm myself twice yesterday because I went into gun free zones.

God bless Long are policie.

FatCircles0311

God bless libtard policies.

Damn autocorrect I swear.

A Proud Infidel®™

Yeah, auto-correct can be a real mother forklift!

UpNorth

No, it’s a real forkspoon.

Obama sob story about his inability to get anything done on gun control….
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/jul/24/obama-most-frustrated-inability-pass-gun-control/

AW1Ed

Co-worker and I were discussing this today, and opined on the number of firearms Barry owns.
The number we came up with is somewhere between none and zip-point-shit.

Mr. Blue

Ah, but Barry has people provided at taxpayer expense to carry guns for him, and will have them available for the rest of his life.

C2Show

Not even safe to go to movies anymore. lafeyette, real hoodrat kind of town but usually quiet. Got a few things going on, but damn.

Let’s do a profile check on this guy.

* Living in a rundown motel, check.
* He had lots and lots of problems, check.
* Indicated as crazy, check.
* He was dangerous, check.
* Family members requested a protective order from him, check.
* Extreme erratic behavior, check.
* Ominous/disturbing statements, check.
* Wife removed all weapons from the home for fear of volatile mental state, check.
* Wife filed for divorce, check.
* Bloated LinkedIn profile, check.
* Expressed opinions that people “laughed” at, check.
* Fetish for things that gave him power, check.
* Quick to express a “conspiracy” theory, check.

Folks, this is a good description of Dennis (Denny) Howard Chevalier, very similar profile. As I’ve indicated before, Dennis (Denny) Howard Chevalier shows himself to be unstable, to have a fetish for power, and to be a ticking time bomb. He is still causing reasonable fear with one of his former better halves.

rb325th

The man was denied a permit by the Sherriff due to his involuntary commitment and arson conviction, yet he was able to purchase the gun “legally” at a pawn shop? WTF? Did they not run his background check before selling him the gun? Any gun purchase is subject to a background check. Why is it he was able to pass that check, and not the one for a concealed carry permit?

A Proud Infidel®™

The info that should have prevented him from buying that firearm might not have been in all of the databases it should have been. As for me, I’ve gone through the NICS database check every time I’ve bought a firearm from an FFL dealer, Gun Show or otherwise. I see this as further proof we cannot rely on the Government to do what pols and bureaucrats says it will!
