Obama White House abandons bullet ban

| March 11, 2015

The Hill reports that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has withdrawn plans to ban the 5.56mm M885 “green tip” ammunition for the time being;

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) said it will not seek to issue a final framework for the rule “at this time” after receiving more than 80,000 comments on the proposal, the “vast majority” of which were negative.

“You spoke, we listened,” the ATF tweeted.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun-rights groups assailed the proposal, and were joined by Republicans in demanding that it be withdrawn.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he is “pleased that the Obama administration has abandoned its attack on the Second Amendment.”

I guess that whoever had invested in ammo manufacturers figured they had made enough, what with some sellers gouging gun owners of the popular AR-style rifles that fire that ammo which was still expensive from the last ammo scare early last year. The Hill still refers to the ammunition as “armor piercing” even though it has no more armor piercing qualities than any other ammunition.

…so, show of hands; who thinks this is over…yeah, me neither.

Old Trooper

It’s not over, it’s just a pull back and regroup, before the next assault. Their own statement says as much.

RunPatRun

“the Obama administration has abandoned its attack on the Second Amendment.”

^^ Not likely.

These liberal pukes just don’t seem to get it when it comes to banning something do they? People will find a way around it, no matter what.

“…for the time being.”

That’s the only part anyone needs to read.

They’ll be back.

Carlton G. Long

I also fear this was just a “trial balloon” and that the gun-grabbers will be back with something else one of these days.

JacktheJarhead

Never over, not with this bunch. They will come back with something in a few weeks to months. But they are finding that people are not going to lie down and take it.

Ex-PH2

Over? Nah! There’s more lurking in the wings. Stick around.

Obama White House abandons bullet ban. . . . . for now.

Maybe they’ll try to ban stripper clips next. Of course they’ll have to figure out the difference between them and magazines first.

Climb to Glory

More manufactured bullshit based solely on looks. Oh, that rifle is black scary. It has a pistol grip, flash suppressor and high capacity clip(magazine). We must ban it. Oh, that ammunition has a fancy green(paint) tip. It must be armor piercing. We must ban it. It’s for the children and law enforcement after all. People trying to make laws that don’t know dick about firearms.

Oh … sorry Arby … I see that you’re quoting from the movie.

An ice pick will penetrate most body armor worn by street cops.
Ice picks should be banned!

I suspect we will hear more of this – either something they pulled off while everyone was looking at this, or later when they are re-trying to get universal background checks and registration databases – we’ll hear “but we compromised on the M885, you need to compromise on this.” I can feel it in my bones… well, not in my bones, but where the doc checked my prostate this morning.

IMHO the ATF/Administration dropped the idea because they were going to lose (and lose big) when this went to a Federal judge.

There was a great legal analysis on this earlier in the week.

I was at a gun show the other day at our local VFW hall, there was a guy selling M855 and advertizing it as “armor piercing”. I kindly took the opportunity to tell him that it wasn’t helpfull to the discussion and potentially false advertizing as the box clearly states M855 Ball. Some folks just can’t help themselves.

Yea…they’ll be back.

re: “armor piercing” is situational. For certain kinds of armor any firearm ammunition is armor piercing. For example, that ancient “man in a can” armor works against a sword but can probably be pierced by 22 LR. 3/4-inch AR500 is good against 50 BMG or 12.7 for a few hits. In WW2 the Brits had something called a Boyes Rifle. It was vicious to shoot but it could penetrate some but not all tank armor.

For the armor worn day to day by cops (II or IIIa), M855 won’t notice, blows right through. Neither will M193 or M80 or most of the other 7.62 loads. For those calibers you need III or IV with plates like troops wear.

So the whole argument is a lot more nuanced than the press or ATF wants it to be. Jerks.

From day one I told anyone who would listen that this was nothing more than testing the waters to see what they could get away with. This isn’t over.

Sapper3307

A nice side note is that ammo prices are going back to normal. Just remember to not support any company’s that engaged in price gouging.

Luddite4Change

Normal pricing is still inconvenient if there is no supply.

I think my buddy tried to personnally corner the market on M855 in the last two weeks.

When liberals are butt hurt…they need their comfort.
