Sailors roughed up in Turkey

| November 13, 2014

Jerry sends us a link to CBS News which reports that US sailors were attacked by Turkish citizens while they were on shore leave in Istanbul;

“Soldiers from the occupying country think they can walk around freely in Eminonu,” association spokesman Melik Dibek said, referring to the neighborhood where the incident occurred. “It’s obvious why they’ve anchored here -because of their ambitions in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. American imperialism is the reason why the Middle East has turned into a chamber of fire.”

The servicemen, who were not in uniform, were from the USS Ross, a guided-missile destroyer docked nearby, according to Capt. Greg Hicks, a spokesman for the U.S. European Command. He said they were not hurt and were safely back aboard the ship, but that shore leave for its sailors was canceled for the remainder of the day.

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara condemned the attack on Twitter and said it had no doubt that most Turks would reject such an action.

Yeah, our imperialism and ambitions in the Black Sea. The US Embassy statement must have come from someone who has been sleeping the last few decades. The Turks, who have the most to lose in a successful Islamic Caliphate in the region, have hardly lifted a finger to beat back the Islamic State. In fact, they used the war as an excuse to bomb the Kurds a few weeks back.

And in the war against Saddam Hussein, they wouldn’t let move the 4th Division through their country in that endeavor. That’s their right, certainly, but they also wouldn’t let US war planes use our bases there to attack ISIS for quite some time. Despite the billions of dollars that we’ve poured into their military. That should probably end abruptly.

I will comment this a wee bit later.

Kemal Ataturk rolling in his grave as his dream/vision of Turkey as a secular democracy go up in smoke…

Mustang1LT

Yeah, especially considering how bad things were for the Ottoman Empire from the 19th century until WWI. They didn’t call that country “The Sick Man of Europe” for nothing. They may have a nasty surprise awaiting them between the Russians, the Iranians, and ISIS.

The Other Whitey

All of whom wouldn’t piss on a Turk if he was on fire.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

But all of whom would piss on one before they beheaded the petulant, ungrateful fucks…

Mustang1LT

From your lips to Allah’s ears!

Concur.

That man had vision and balls. Apparently he died without leaving any heirs.

Mustang1LT

Yep, stop the cash and leave them twisting in the wind. Maybe even push for the Kurds to have their own country. With friends like these…..
Between the Russians, Iranians, and the Islamic State, Turkey is living in a dangerous neighborhood. They might want to think very carefully about their relationship with us.

AW1 Tim

Concur. Let them understand that RealPolitik is a beyatch.

AW1 Tim

In the old days, the warship would get up steam and be ready to depart quickly, then send a large contingent of sailors ashore for some “dungaree liberty”.

The locals who pulled that crap would think twice about doing it again. The business owners would also be up in arms when the sailors, in future visits, were restricted to ship, or have that whole area placed “off limits”.

But I agree with the above. Stop the cash. Stop the assistance. Remove all of our troops and personnel, and leave the Ambassador, his secretary and driver. Let the frikkin’ turks deal with the ISIS crew on one side, and the Soviets, er, Russians on the other.

Old Trooper

It’s all well and good to think we can just cut off funds to Turkey, but you must remember they are a member of NATO, so there’s more than just US interests and say in the area.

Instinct

So let the rest of NATO fund them. They are not, and have never been, our allies and so deserve none of our support.

If NATO doesn’t like it, we can depart that august organization too and form something with our ACTUAL allies.

“Yankee go home!” Red Sox fans? Seriously, throwing a rock? But when that bag came out and went over the head of one, those guys should have fought like their lives depended on it.

Climb to Glory

Got 5 seconds in to the video before stopping because I would broken my computer. Fuck the Turks. Fuck the whole lot of them. I agree with AW1, Mustang, and 2/17. Bunch of spoiled punks. Turkey is going down a dangerous path. I’m not sure that they are much of an ally these days. But hell, I’m sure the Great Uniter in the White House will bring us all together and world peace will be achieved.

Climb to Glory

Oh, I forgot to say that I’m glad those little rascals were condemned on twitter. I’m sure they were just upset over a random youtube video. #bringbackourgirls#incompetentdonothingwhitehouse

The Other Whitey

Ungrateful swine. Please tell them I said that. They are swine, the product of their mothers fucking pigs.

I’ve been told that Turks know how to fight. So let’s just stand back and observe while their neighbors (who all agree on only one thing: they absolutely fucking HATE Turks) put that claim to the test.

Kemal Attaturk would puke to see what his country has become.

Mustang1LT

Turks know how to fight? Well, when the main people you’ve been fighting recently are the Greeks, that really doesn’t say much!

Green Thumb

We should consult Commander Phil Monkress at All-Points Logistics about this occurrence.

We should seek his insight being that he was a former Navy SEAL; understands sensitive cultural issues being that he is a Native American and we should also seek his legal and law expertise being that he is a Law Enforcement Officer himself (Reserve Status).

Additionally, it is entirely possible that APL has a contract somewhere in Turkey. Well, maybe not so much anymore after losing the “BIG” one at a tune of $350 million.

But hey, lets see what he says….

Fuck the Turks. The whole ungrateful lot of ’em! If we stopper supporting them, I’m sure Putin would lend them a hand…well an Iron Fist.

Also “The U.S. Embassy in Ankara condemned the attack on Twitter…” TWITTER, Really!!! Our international diplomats communicate to the world and the nation concerned via Twitter???!!! What happened to signified, official channels of communications? Just unreal in my opinion.

Try this again with better fingers.

Diplomacy by Twitter IS the Obama way, and never ends well….*SPIT*

Really a shame. I spent several years in Turkey and, for the most part, loved it – especially the west coast. Though I will say this: IMO, Turks are VERY motivated by money and reputation. And even educated Turks will tell you openly that the reason the country has problems is because of *spitting on the ground” the Kurdish. I often marveled at the amount of money the USA dumped into that country and came to the obvious conclusion of location, location, location. I still have many Turkish friends and they are also disgusted by the floundering of the government and the lack of support in the fight of radical Islam. Something’s gotta give eventually, but I guarantee that Turkish support of a Kurdish state will NEVER happen!!! And it also seemed to me, watching the video above, that it was young mens’ testosterone trying to look tough over true American hatred.

Crucible

Disturbing to me was to hear yesterday a Navy spokesman state (paraphrased) that they were “proud of them for not fighting back”.

WTF

2/17 Air Cav

I am not the only one exercising restraint on this matter. Ah, screw it. I’ll say it. This is hardly the stuff of an international incident. What is shocking is that there was no fight in the Navy. None. The one sailor we saw clearly looked like a wimp and reacted like a sissy. It was assholes and elbows and every man for himself by the looks of things. I am embarrassed for them.

Fire away, if you will.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Well, in today’s PC environment had they fought back they would receive some NJP and be released from the service on their return to the states….

Club Manager

I’ve transited Istanbul several times since 2005 when I do an international election, stopping over a few times to shop. The Turks love us for our money, and prefer we simply mail it to them and barely tolerate us in person. The airport Holiday Inn staff is a good example and I wanted to smack a few people. When I shop I impersonate a German and don’t dress like an American (e.g., belt buckle, ball cap, expensive running shoes) and still remember a few words from my 3rd ID days in Germany. Not only am I safer, I get better prices.

This is business as usual.

Most Turks are good folks, dont condemn a nation based on the actions of a few.

ArmyATC

There’s any easy fix for that type of shit. Stop all funding for the Turkish military. Help the Kurds transition from a “autonomous region” to a full fledged and recognized nation. Move all our assets out of Turkey to the new Kurdish state. Tell the Turks to go fuck themselves and to have fun with ISIS as we walk out the door.

The trash who tried to provoke the sailors are more along the lines of the poor lil rich kid occupy jerkoffs. I know their type well, having been married to a Turkish woman for over 12 year and lived in the country for 15 years both military and civilian. They long for a return to the 60s yet have no clue about any of those implications. I remember in the late 80s people could still “disappear”.
Turkey’s been on the slippery slope for quite awhile now. The “election” of Erdoclown and his Gulenist/Islamist trash has just accelerated the process. Turkey used to have a military/commercial relationship with Israel. Now that the koranderthals are in office, this has finished and they’ve tried to get the arab countries to fill the void.
The “youth league” attempts to blame the US for the garbage going on in the region. Turkey with its indirect support for the koranderthals going in and out of Syria, dubious weapons smuggling role in Libya(amongst other places), and failure to act/attempt to play “let’s make a deal” during the Iraq invasion etc. has done far more damage than anything else.
In the old days, the Turkish military police would have rolled up and the “youth league ” would have gotten a good wood shampooing or worse, and some time in Turkish prison to contemplate the error of their ways. The turkish military head shed has been defanged and replaced with hacks much like ours has.

Redacted1775

May those spineless chickenshit fucks die and die badly.

Duncan McDonut

That’s what they want…. only their NATO membership saves them from themselves.

Sapper3307

The battle ship Missouri is leveling its 16 inch guns on the horizon right now.
God I miss Ronald Reagan.

BOILING MAD CPO

2/17 Air Cav Agree with your take on the video. Ashamed that they did not fight back at least a little bit. They did look like they were surprised at being jumped and did not know how to react.

We also have to understand the PC in today’s navy. In yesteryear’s navy, things would have been different, I’m sure.
