Dempsey: US advisors are likely to take a more direct role in Iraq

last convoy out of Iraq

Yesterday, we talked about some senior commanders who have been telling the President that we should have more troops on the ground in Iraq. Apparently, one of those senior commanders is General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He told a Sunday show yesterday that airstrikes alone aren’t getting the job done;

…he said that when Iraqi forces are ready to take the offensive against the Islamic State jihadists who have overrun swaths of territory in northern and western Iraq, as well as in Syria, that would likely change.

“Mosul will likely be the decisive battle in the ground campaign at some point in the future,” Dempsey said in an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” referring to the northern Iraqi city seized by IS militants in June.

“My instinct at this point is that will require a different kind of advising and assisting because of the complexity of that fight,” he said.

Funny how since the president told us that he wasn’t going to allow combat troops to put their boots on the ground, this administration has been acclimatizing the public to that eventuality.

And so VietNam begins again. First it was advisers, then a few troops fighting, etc, etc.
And under THIS CIC (Chump In Chief)?

If there’s even one Combat Arms Soldier there (which there are many) you can’t tell me they weren’t already taking a direct role before this.

It doesn’t take a 4-star to tell someone in an “advisor” role: Okay, you can shoot now…

Dempsey …”he said that when Iraqi forces are ready to take the offensive against the Islamic State jihadists who have overrun swaths of territory in northern and western Iraq, as well as in Syria, that would likely change.”

Maybe I missed a comma somewhere but if Dempsey is telling us the Iraqis are READY to stand and fight the IS jihadists, well maybe they’re ready but the question is, are they willing. If it is WHEN Iraqi forces are ready. Different story, we only spent over a decade arming and training them. If they aren’t ready now, they never will be. I am no longer in favor of going to fight someone’s war when they aren’t willing to. They are not hapless and helpless…well maybe hapless but they have enough training and minus the arms they have already tossed or otherwise given to ISIS, they are still well equipped. I am at the point of giving all aid and support to the Kurds. Tell them, you guys fight for ALL you want. You want Iraq, Syria, all the way to Saudi Arabia? GO FOR IT! Just kill and run out the Muslim terrorists and generally, police up the area as you go. Watch those cigarette butts on the ground too. In seriousness I say tell the Iraqi people, your help is coming from the Kurds, they have the support, weapons and money, so…you better be nice to them and get along

Agreed.

We get out, then we go back in? What kind of idiot strategy is that? Who comes up with this crap?

You’re either in it to win it, or you go home. Decide now.

Never seen mission creep move with such speed.

I am not going over to the side of the SAHippies in this, but I object.

Either we go in there and actually fight it like the war it is, or we stay the hell out of it and give the Kurds whatever they need in support and armaments, and bomb the living shit out of ISer turf.

What is WITH those idiots????

Arming the Kurds would be the proper thing to do, but it’s not the politically expediate thing to do. If we arm the Kurds any more than we already have, then Turkey will get very upset. If that happens,we can run into all sorts of problems. I know, I know; screw Turkey. However, that ain’t gonna happen. It didn’t happen under GWB and it ain’t gonna happen now.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

“The tenure of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, has been marked by what we view as significant deficiencies in command,” the six wrote in an addendum to the committee’s Jan. 15 report on Benghazi. “From Syria to Benghazi, there has been either a profound inability or clear unwillingness to identify and prevent problems before they arise. Given the known operating environment in Benghazi, much less North Africa, a strong military leader would have ensured there was a viable plan in place to rescue Americans should the need arise.”

Many of you point out how the men at the senior levels are less soldier and more politician these days, none more so than Dempsey. A giant steaming turd who protects the misdeeds of his compatriots while allowing junior officers and ncos to be separated seemingly at a whim to meet some RIF….

Dempsey has long since left his testicles in the dark recesses of his residence, now he mouths the words his masters dictate and pretends he had an original thought.

What a sobering thought to see this man remains in charge of yet another potentially grand excursion folly in the middle east, run by the amateur incompetents at 1600 PA Avenue…

The Other Whitey

The president has insisted “no boots on the ground.” As a result, the DoD has announced that it will immediately begin signing multi-billion dollar contracts for Tactical Flip-Flops to be issued to personnel deploying to Iraq. General Dempsey issued a statement saying that the Army is “proud to revive one of the oldest traditional pieces of a Soldier’s uniform,” citing the many victories won in antiquity by Spartan and Athenian warriors who wore sandals into battle. He insisted that the new footwear will be “ideal for modern combat in arid environments, allowing the wearer’s feet to breathe while only moderately hampering mobility.”

The general dismissed complaints that flip-flops can easily fall off of the wearer’s feet while running, climbing, or doing anything but walking, and refused to answer criticism about the cost of the project or the fact that DoD is spending money on this when the troops are going to war. He would say only that the new uniform items are “fully approved by President Obama in accordance with his vision for the future of America and its Army.”
