Nose, Face, Spite. That Kinda Thing.

We’re all very aware of the Ebola outbreak in west Africa. But you really have to wonder about the intellect – or sanity – of some of those involved.

Recently, the government of Australia pledged a substantial contribution – $2.5M each to both the WHO and the NGO group Medicines Sans Frontiers, or MSF – to be used to defray costs associated with containing the outbreak. It also pledged a contribution of $2M to the UK government to help with their efforts in Sierra Leone. This brings Australia’s contribution to the effort to contain the Ebola outbreak to $8M.

MSF turned the money down. Why? On the grounds that Australia was “shirking it’s responsibility” to help contain the epidemic (or words to that effect) by not sending people.

What a load of horsesh!t.

Now, I think MSF is a fine charity. They’re doing great things, worldwide, in helping to reduce suffering.  But here, they’re just freaking out to lunch.

They’re a charity. Charities help people when they can’t help themselves. They don’t make policy.

What follows is a message for the head of MSF:

“Listen up, f**kwit. No – don’t try to say a damn thing.  Just sit down, STFU, and listen up.

You obviously don’t ‘get it’.

The government of Australia is helping the best way they feel that they can. They have advised their own citizens that they have no capability to evacuate them from western Africa should things go bad.  They’ve determined that they don’t have the capability to provide help in kind – or that doing so is not in their national interest.

Your organization has no claim on Australia’s resources.  And the government of Australia doesn’t have any ‘responsibility’ to anyone but Australians.  They obviously don’t think it’s in their best interests to send large numbers of people to west Africa right now.  That’s their call – not yours.

Get a grip, and remember who – and what – you are.  Quit acting like a combination prima donna and spoiled brat who got a different toy from the exact one they wanted.

Take the Australian money, tell them thanks, and buy some sh!t your organization needs. Or use it to hire some folks to do things you can’t do now. But damn – quit being stupid.  And concentrate on doing your freaking job instead of trying to tell others how to do theirs.

That is all.  Now, get yer ass out of here and get back to doing something useful.  You’re actually pretty good at that when you put your mind to it.”

Sheesh.  Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face . . . .

That’s the same reason I say we should be sending aid in several forms but not military bodies. Doctors and nurses who volunteer to go, that’s admirable and I am sure helps. But sending people just to get more infected and have it spread back into Europe and the U.S. is foolish. Australia should tell them to screw themselves now AND we are restricting ALL flights ans travel from the infected part of Africa. I am not a conspiracy nut bit anybody else see World War Z? Infections can spread quicker than believed to be contained and an unprepared population of hosts is what it seeks. With dim wits in the country not immunizing their kids, we could have a problem in a hurry.

I think we *should* be there for a couple of reasons –
1. This MSF bullshit would fly if we were in charge – we would take the money and use it appropriately
2. No way in hell are we able to implement a travel ban to africa. Any places we do ban, will just become a way point to a place that we dont ban.
3. This is the worst flareup with Ebola that we have ever seen, by an exponential amount. If we dont get the adults involved, it is just a few infected population increase from hitting our boarders.

#3 If anyone is counting on adults to make some big boy decisions in this administration – they’re in for some serious disappointment…

pigmypuncher…Roger That Brother! Obama will be watching Ebola victims march in front of the White House before he does what is necessary to protect America. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for helping these folks in a right and safe way but I am FAR MORE about helping keep America safe from this. If this nation is suddenly fighting a wide spread outbreak what position will we be in to help anyone else or defend ourselves.

James…Point 2. We can control travel INTO America from the infected parts or Africa as a whole if we chose to. We throw a lot of money at a lot of BS stuff in the name of fixing it. If we had to set up quarantine facilities near designated airports for all aid workers or anyone suspected of coming from those areas we could. In that way we could test and evaluate those returning and be sure it is not getting out into the populace. It just takes the will and decision to do so but as pigmypuncher pointed out, waiting for Obama to make a good decision for the best of out nation would be an impossible wait. He would first have to check the polls, get liberal feedback, ask the ACLU if they had a problem with it and by the time he did anything worthwhile the U.S. population would be walking around in surgical masks to avoid exposure. At that point…too late.

And here I was thinking the new season of The Walking Dead didn’t start until next month.

James – let me see, you want to send 3000 people who are untrained at dealing with Ebola into a hot zone – drawn from the only population pool we HAVE to re-admit to the US? Sorry, buddy, this is a situation we should throw money and an embargo at, not non-specialized troops.

The Other Whitey

Australia’s only responsibility regarding the Ebola plague is to make sure it doesn’t get to Australia. Since they have no land borders, their Navy and Air Force can handle that mission, although you probably won’t like how they do it. THAT’S their responsibility! They’re coughing up millions for you out of the goodness of their DownUnder hearts. If you don’t want to put that free money to good use, then who’s really the asshole here?

Just cause there work looks good and is media enticing, doesn’t always mean that it is good.

I used to give a donation to MSF, but after seeing their longer term field work up close and personal across the continent I’ve found other organizations that can put my monetary investment to better long term use.
