Gabby Giffords: 2d Amendment is war against women

So, former Congresswoman, Gabriel Giffords who has made it her life’s work to grab guns from law abiding citizens took to the pages of CNN this week to declare that gun laws endanger women because of this dude in Houston, Ron Lee Haskell who tragically murdered 4 children and two adults.
This month, just outside of Houston, a man police say had a history of abusing and threatening women got his hands on a gun and executed six members of his ex-wife’s family — including four children. On that day, local law enforcement officials believe he was on his way to hunt down other family members when, thankfully, they ended his rampage.
In our country, it’s a sadly common story: An abuser or stalker gains access to guns and destroys the lives of women and families in our communities.
That’s why it is time for Congress to address this lethal mix of domestic violence and guns. Our leaders must pass laws that prevent stalkers and abusers from accessing guns to intimidate, hurt or kill women.
While I agree with her that criminals who have been proven so in the courtroom, Haskell is the wrong example to use. According to Salon, who actually asks the question in their headline “How Did He Get a Gun?” without answering it, Haskell was under a restraining order;
To no one’s great surprise, Haskell had been arrested for domestic violence in 2008, and his ex-wife filed a protective order against him in 2013. All of which leads to the question: Considering the laws put in place, both on federal and state levels, to prevent domestic abusers from getting guns, how did Haskell get one?
While we don’t know yet if the gun Haskell used was legally obtained, Hannah Levintova and Dana Liebelson put together a chilling report at Mother Jones that shows that, due to multiple loopholes that the NRA fiercely lobbies to protect, “his case appears to be the latest example of how easy it remains for domestic abusers to possess firearms, thanks to weak legislation.”
Yeah, well, there’s form that every gun buyer fills out when he buys a gun, the ATF-4473 which asks questions in regards to that. Here’s a copy;

See the question down there in paragraph (h)? It asks if you are subject to a restraining order. Question (i) asks if you’ve EVER been convicted of domestic abuse – so the answer to Salon’s question is “He got the gun illegally” because of a gun control law. No matter how Haskell got the gun – it was illegal already.
So, Giffords continues;
Between 2001 and 2012, more women were shot to death by an intimate partner in our country than the total number of American troops killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. That is a national shame.
Fortunately, the momentum is on our side. On Wednesday, the Senate will hold its first-ever hearing on domestic violence homicides and the use of gun violence against America’s women. Many of our elected leaders are calling for new protections for those who are subject to abuse. States are already taking bipartisan action. And Americans support these laws by staggering margins.
Since she’s using the example of Haskell and not telling us the truth about how he got a gun, it seems reasonable to me that no more laws would have helped in that case, unless they want to pass a law that expedites permission for a woman to arm herself if she’s been threatened.
Currently, federal law prevents people who are under domestic violence protection orders or have misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from accessing guns. But even though increasing numbers of couples are choosing to marry later in life, the law hasn’t been extended to address dating partner abuse. And convicted stalkers can still get guns.
Well, the question on the ATF 4473 says “intimate partner”, it doesn’t say “wife” “ex-wife” or “gay lover” – “intimate partner” seems to me to address “dating partner abuse”, there, Gabby.
Common sense says that these dangerous loopholes should be closed now. Congress has the power to do it.
Like the gun show loophole needs to be closed.
My problem with this law is not that I want women to be less safe, the gun control activists want to relieve people of their gun rights without Fourth Amendment protections of due process. They want to take away people’s guns rights by simply filing a piece of paper with the court – it’s happened once to me but it wasn’t a domestic situation. It was pure vindictiveness. It amounted to punishment without my day in court.
And what’s the point anyway if there are already laws on the books? I wouldn’t trust this Congress to change toilet paper rolls in the men’s room, let alone let them write gun laws – and Gabby Giffords is good example of the disingenuous denizens of that legislative body.

Sorry if this seems harsh. But based on Gifford’s reported physical condition and abilities not long before she resigned her seat in Congress I have to say wonder if Giffords actually wrote that article – or if someone “ghost wrote” it and took advantage of her name.
She is the latest person used as a prop by the anti-gun movement. She seems to have replaced James Brady. They both are dramatic but you have to look behind the curtain. Strange that in both cases the assailant should not have access to a weapon with the laws that were current at the time.
5 bucks says Mark Kelly wrote it. He tends to use Gabby as prop for his gun control efforts.
Bingo. He is the puppet master.
I was thinking the same thing Hondo. She was shot in the head; she has to have some cognitive issues. I also want to send out a preemptive fuck you to VWP. VWP, you don’t give a shit about Sandy Hook or any dead bodies for that matter.
Climb to Glory: not necessarily; cognitive ability may or may not be impaired by a TBI, stroke, or other organic brain illness/injury. Stanislaw Ulam – the brilliant mathematician and theoretical physicist who with Edward Teller developed the theory of how to make a working H-bomb – damn near died of encephalitis not long after World War II (it was so bad that he was in a coma for a while). He was mentally unaffected after he recovered.
However, as I recall Giffords is known to have significant issues with normal day-to-day activities and routine speech. The possibility of cognitive issues due to being shot in the head IMO cannot be ruled out.
Yeah, looking at the shape she’s been in since her injury, I think her asshole husband has been telling her what she thinks. Kelly is as much of a disgrace to the Navy as (Master)Bateman is to the Army. Fuck that shitweasel.
Have to agree with all. Saw her at the Tucson airport a few months ago. She was in a wheelchair with a detached smile on her face while her scowling husband wheeled her along with a TSA agent in tow. That’s too bad that she’s being used as a poster girl for the gun control lobby. I don’t think she would have liked that. She was my district rep for many years and did a good job overall. The only complaint I would have would be that she said she would vote against the ACA and then she voted for it. After that we saw a few cars around her with soap writings saying “Kill Giffords”, I thought that was horrible and it may well have been what triggered, the very schizophrenic Jared Laughner, to shoot her.
Better tighten those rules on high heels too. A woman in Houston was recently convicted of murder using a high heel shoe.
Seriously, when my ex hit me, he never used a gun. This nonsense pisses me off. How many women and men for that matter are killed by knives or rocks for that matter?
I am sick of these idiots avoiding the real issues, the DV laws in place do not work, its that simple. If an individual is set on hurting their spouse or partner, a piece of paper is not going to stop that. How many times have we heard complaints from victims that the police could do nothing because the suspect had done nothing wrong to date? Fix that shit and you won’t need to worry about guns.

Actually, gun control laws oppress women. We (pro-2A types) aren’t the ones who want to render a 110 lb woman unable to defend herself against her 250 lb ex-boyfriend.
Sadly we have come to point in our country where getting shot by a mentally defective person makes one a gun control expert. And a dollar says she did not write this.
Lead-induced cognitive dissonance.
Without wishing to sound like a ghoul the reality of the death toll for women there are about 1.25 million deaths per year….so overall in 11 years 14 million women have died…. 2850 women were murdered by all types of crime in 2012. 1600 women were murdered in a non-felony crime murder. Over 11 years that number gets quite high, could be as high as 35,000 women. But what do those numbers actually represent? They sound high and they sound horrible but they are .002 of all deaths for women over the same period…137500 women died in slip and fall accidents over the same 11 year period, 200,000 women died in car accidents, 5.5 MILLION died from being overweight or smoking, and another almost 5 million died from cancer. When we calculate death and then attempt to formulate policy the emotional component of the death has to be disregarded, Ms. Gifford and her husband are incapable of that honest inspection of the data. The absence of guns won’t change the outcome of an ex-lover intent on committing violence against a woman. Thinking a 200lb male can’t beat a 120lb female to death is just stupid as it happens in 15% of all homicides whether the victim is male or female. The Haskell case is also a poor example because it is a multiple shooting case, these cases account for 1% of the total deaths by firearms annually. Applying the 1% figure to our 11 year death total of 33,000 means that we are talking about 330 victims over an 11 year period. To place that in proper perspective during the same 11 year period about 400 people were mauled to death by dogs. National policy should never be formulated based on the outcome of an event no more likely than being chewed to death by a dog. What happened to Ms. Gifford is tragic, women being murdered by men who claim they were once in love with those women is also extremely tragic. Having your 22 year old brother slip down a flight of stairs and die from a brain… Read more »
VOV: I am stealing and slightly modifying that quote for future use. Excellent.
I am quite flattered, thank you my friend and feel free to use as you see appropriate, where you see it appropriate.
Thank you.
By the way: according to this source, between 2006 and 2012 a total of 238 people in the US were killed by lightning – or an average of 34 per year over 7 years. So I think you can add “or being killed by lightning” to your quote in this particular case.
But it also says you might want to re-think your love of soccer, too. (smile)
Regarding soccer, one of the more frightening lightning strikes took place in an African Cup game when lightning struck the field (not the stadium) and knocked all 22 players and the referee team off their feet….there was some amazing video about the incident, I will see if I can find the link again…it looked like 25 people were all brought down with a single shot….the one string puppet drop if you know what I mean and I suspect you do…
VoV,
I am also stealing this for future use.
Thank you for writing such a well worded, fact filled, post.
I’ll ask since it has been some time since she was shot in the head by a kook. Since she was a Democrat was she brain damaged before she was shot in the head and the bullet just enhanced that problem after she was shot?
Why is it the press listens to people who have no business speaking about certain topics. The parents of an abused kid become experts on child abuse prevention. Someone shot in the head by a kook becomes an expert on preventing gun violence.
Actually, Giffords, although she was a Democrat, was pretty good in that role. In fact, the day before she was shot, TAH praised her for recommending that Congressmen reduce their staffs in order to save taxpayer dollars. Unfortunately, that proposal died when she was shot.
She was also pretty pro 2A before being shot. I can’t help but think that her loving hubby is pulling her strings in most cases these days.
Well, yeah, Kelly has all the guns he needs, apparently. So fuck everyone else, and hooray for him.
Whenever the conversation turns to gun control, I can’t help but think of the old Archie Bunker quote, ” Would it make you feel any better, little girl, if they was pushed outta windows?”
Well, the gay people who like guns disagree with her (husband’s) opinion.
http://news.msn.com/us/the-gay-advocates-of-gun-rights-1
And as the Dalai Lama says, ‘If someone with a gun is trying to shoot you and kill you, it is reasonable to shoot back.’
Any human being hell-bent on killing someone can get their hands on a firearm one way or another. If they are planning to commit the major felony of homicide, then they aren’t going to fear breaking ANY gun control laws.
And since the criminal element in any community is guaranteed to have a supply of illegal firearms, that individual with murder on his mind can obtain one from that source with relative impunity.
Trying to keep guns out of the hands of the truly determined perpetrator with tougher gun control laws is like trying to eliminate prostitution with tougher vice laws: it just doesn’t work. Those with the desire will always find a way to thwart the law to obtain what they want.
You can bet Haskell knew his actions were going to earn him the death penalty in Texas, and in fairly short time, not like the decades-long waits in other states. So how could the minor violation of another gun control law deter him in any possible way, especially since guns are readily available outside the law?
Society would be better served by passing laws to ensure that those requesting a protective order against a potentially violent partner be ISSUED a firearm and given a quick course in its use by local law enforcement personnel. That might save the lives of many future victims as well as saving the taxpayers the costs for incarceration, prosecution and execution.
Women are the victims of gun violence as gabby gif fords learned the hard way! When President Obama or after 2016 President Mrs. Clinton replaces one of the neanderthal republicans on the supreme court with an enlightened liberal democrat we will end this madness!
Yo, dipstick commenting above as vwp: men murdered with firearms outnumber women by almost a 6:1 margin.
http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/fv9311.pdf
Among those who suffered nonfatal firearms violence, males still outnumbered females by nearly 20%. See the same study I linked above.
Once again, you are talking right out of your anus. But that’s to be expected from an ignorant anus.
Did women shoot the men?
Hey, dipstick – your other remark stated that “women are the target of gun violence”. My reply had nothing to do with the shooters. I was just providing hard data showing you were full of it and talking out of your anus – again.
Geez. Put the bong down – and back away from the keyboard. Slowly.
Then GFY. Oh, and the late MLK Jr. has a message for you, too (images probably NSFW work or polite company):
And so does this unnamed lady:

Hondo, I haven’t seen that MLK picture since one of the best teachers I have ever had in grade school. You know, back when a movie in class meant the repetitive ticking of the projector after the teacher spending ten minutes setting the reel up.
Oh, and VWP, go fuck yourself, sideways, with a porcupine.
Have I told you lately that you’re a moron? Moron. GFY.
Dude, put the crack pipe down- the rock has done f*cked yo’ sh*t up
Somewhere out there, there is a tree tirelessly working to produce oxygen for you to breathe.
I think you owe it an apology.
Just more Libtards abusing the disabled to get their way. Just like how dangerous shitbags privacy is more important than the lives of random citizens. Everything is a means to an end for those scumfucks.
“Between 2001 and 2012, more women were shot to death by an intimate partner in our country than the total number of American troops killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.”
Oh, I love this one. One group has a sample size of ~100 million, give or take. The other has a sample size of… how many troops have served in OIF/OEF? Two million? Lies and statistics, etc.
Scott: when repeat tours are taken into account, probably closer to 1 million individuals. The “boots on the ground” total for that period is around 1.4 million, but many of those individuals served multiple tours between 2001 and 2012 – and each repeat tour reduces the number of individuals by one.
The left will always find some reason to attack our right to keep and bear arms. Right now it’s the domestic violence card. They have no data to back up their call for more restrictions. If they did, the public would see them for the liars they are. A Sam Houston State University study titles, “Profiling weapon use in domestic violence: Multilevel analysis of situational and neighborhood factors,” Showed that women were more likely to be stabbed to death (7%) than shot (4%) by a partner, and most were beaten to death with either the murderers hands, feet, or an object such as a baseball bat.
I’ve read through these posts, and I have a few things to say.
1 – vwpissedinhispanties has the intellect of a doorknob and a brain the size of a pea.
2 – vwpussyasswipe has nothing useful to contribute to any conversation, but only makes posts to get attention. There is no backup for anything he says.
3 – vwpissypotatohead constantly cranks the same memes over and over, e.g., deport Republicans, Mrs. Pres. Clinton, all illegals are children, and contributes nothing useful anywhere.
4 – vwpissedinhispanties is a boring one-note whiny asswipe who can’t spell, can’t figure out simple punctuation, and has no concept of standard English and grammar.
Deport him. Now. He’s contributing to air pollution.

Generally speaking, I wish there was a way to close some of the abilities for criminals and others to get a gun. I wish that individuals could call and run a check on someone before selling a gun in a private sale. Generally speaking, I think that when responsible gun owners sell their weapons, they don’t want them to go to someone who is a criminal, or whatever. But I have no faith in the government that AFTER that information is checked that the government would destroy it making it harder to collect / confiscate guns in the future. Sure, they can lose all sorts of emails from the IRS and FEC, but I would bet my last dollar that the files on those who sold weapons as private citizens would be archived and kept forever. And besides, why should the ordinary guy trust the government to do the right thing when government agents think current laws don’t apply to them? TIPTON COUNTY, TN (KFVS) – A former police officer has been found guilty of misconduct. A Tipton County jury found Jack Shelton Hall III, 42, guilty of official misconduct and misuse of official information. The judge dismissed a third charge of criminal responsibility and will sentence the former officer on September 15. Hall remains out on bond until his sentencing. At the request of 25th District Attorney General Mike Dunavant, agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began investigating Hall on July 17, 2012. During the investigation, they found that the Covington police officer ran a stolen check on a handgun in the possession of his father, convicted felon Jack Hall, Jr. Agents further developed evidence that the son new (sic) his father was a felon and still allowed him to have more than 20 guns. Additionally, the officer ran the check on his father’s handgun while on Family Medical Leave Act and portrayed himself to be on-duty when he contacted Central Dispatch. Hall also bought a gun from his father, sold it to a dealer and profited from allowing his father to remain in possession of the guns.… Read more »
