Staff Sergeant Ryan Pitts’ Medal of Honor

| July 21, 2014

Ryan Pitts

At about 3:10 today, the President will award Staff Sergeant Ryan Pitts the Medal of Honor. TSO and ParachuteCutie will be representing TAH in the audience. I met Ryan at Kyle White’s Medal of Honor ceremony and he’s a very humble and unassuming fellow. You’d never know that he did this on July 13th, 2008;

Pitts was manning Observation Post Topside, which was positioned east of the main base, and east of a bazaar and hotel complex in Wanat.

Shortly after, Soldiers conducting surveillance identified potential insurgents. They put together a request for fire. But before that could happen, at about 4:20 a.m, Soldiers heard machine-gun fire from the north. After that, the valley erupted in enemy fire.

Soldiers at OP Topside were hit with small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and hand grenades. Pitts and six other paratroopers at OP Topside were injured in the initial volley of enemy fire. Two paratroopers were killed. Pitts took grenade shrapnel in both legs and his left arm.

For more than an hour after, Pitts continued to fight and defend his position and his teammates, despite his injuries.

Throughout the battle, despite the loss of blood and severity of his wounds, Pitts’ incredible toughness, determination, and ability to communicate with leadership while under fire allowed U.S. forces to hold the observation post and turn the tide of the battle.

Without his ability to stay alert and fight while critically wounded, the enemy would have gained a foothold on high ground and inflicted significantly greater causalities onto the vehicle patrol base, and the enemy could have been in possession of the fallen Soldiers at the observation post.

Just watched the tail end of the ceremony. I know that I’m very sensitive about Obama. I can’t stand the guy. But, I noted how he couldn’t even look the SSGT in the eye. His body language told me that he couldn’t wait to get out of there.

I should have said first though, congratulations SSGT! Your actions were incredible. I salute you, sir!

You know who out west must be beating his head against the wall seeing that TSO was front and center in spite of his attempts to slander TSO. Guess the Secret Service wasn’t impressed with you know who’s brief.

Climb to Glory

He probably doesn’t even have a TV, just an empty box that resembles a TV. Probably sits there mumbling to himself doing fake traffic reports.

God bless you, Staff Sergeant. In a otherwise dark world, you are a ray of light.

You spoke the names of your fallen brothers. May they all rest in peace.

GoldenDragon

For you non-Army types, it’s not SSGT in the Army. It’s SSG.

Also, Obama thinks handing out Medal of Honors left and right will make people think he cares about the military?

Ehh. Not the right time or place for that, GD. Congrats to Staff Sergeant Ryan Pitts (or SSgt Ryan Pitts, or SSG Ryan Pitts) for his presence of mind and intestinal fortitude during an incredible firefight. He served with Honor and Distinction. We come from different branches with slightly different acronyms. I highly doubt a slight was intended.

Nutz. Fat fingered my email address above. It’s me…

Don’t make this about politics about handing Medals of Honor left and right. That was a rough deployment for the 173rd and if you served in Kunar/Nuristan Province you’ll realize he deserves it. That Platoon got hit by a company plus size element (200 Taliban). STFU about handing MOHs left and right.

503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne again! What are they feeding those troopers? Badasses.

I’m 62 and have lost faith what America is becoming. But today I was so inspired. When I saw Ryan Pitts being awarded the Medal of Honor and heard his story I couldn’t stop the tears hearing what those soldiers went through.I just want to comment with the most sincere and deepest respect, that I feel honored to be an American Citizen for whom those brave men were serving. It is this willingness to serve that keeps all Americans free.
Thank you Ryan Pitts, you are my Hero!!
Thank you to all that served with you Ryan and have made the greatest sacrifice for his fellow man.

I sure hope that our schools teach about these brave individuals and their sacrifices. This is the history Americans should know and be well versed in.

Rune

They won’t, but that’s a really good subject for a book. The story behind each medal.

looks like all the little Fisters in B 1/78 FA have someone to look up to now.

well done SSG Pitts!

SJ

A report I saw on local TV said he got out? I hope not. He could be such an inspiration to the younger troopers.

It’s nice to see another 13 series getting the MOH. The Medal tends to get awarded to infantry MOS’ (understandably).

Pitts’ actions were exceptional and well deserving.
