Tuesday morning feel good story

| June 10, 2014

Chief Tango sends us our feel good stories this morning. The first is from Indiana;

Police said Donny L. Sturgill, 30, of Peru, forced his way into the home at the 6400 block of North 400 West, near Denver, around 10 p.m. Saturday.

The homeowner told police he shot Sturgill in self-defense. There was also a second person inside of the home at the time.

The preliminary investigation indicates there was some kind of physical altercation between the residents and Sturgill, according to police.

The report continues that the late Donny Sturgis had been arrested last year for stabbing someone and earlier this year for domestic violence and “criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon”. So I guess no one needed a crystal ball to see this final chapter in his life.

The second story comes from Alaska;

[A 25-year-old Fairbanks] man called troopers at 12:10 a.m. Saturday to report that he had shot at two intruders, who were later described by troopers as two men with whom the occupant was reportedly acquainted.

A 32-year-old man arrived at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital a short while later “with multiple gunshot wounds,” according to a trooper news release.

It was not immediately clear if a second person had been shot, however.

From the Indiana story, “The preliminary investigation indicates there was some kind of physical altercation between the residents and Sturgill, according to police.”

If this altercation was at the time of the shooting, big mistake. If I am armed, as I always am at 10PM should someone force their way into my home, there will be no physical altercation. Except for the physical altercation of two .45 JHP rounds meeting center mass. Why on earth, especially at my age would I let an intruder get close enough to touch me? Doesn’t make sense but I read it in these feel good stories often. People, usually untrained and unseasoned in self defense with a weapon, hesitate. Thus grappling and struggles ensue and sometimes, the homeowner loses. Never let a threat get close enough to touch you. That is why my weapon’s whole and sole purpose is to…”bark here and bite over there”. The best dog in the world.

I don’t understand why only pieces of this story are being reported. Like that the homeowner had texted Donny and invited him over. That the homeowner himself is also a felon. That the Aunt was with Donny, and her version are not being reported at all. Why aren’t the texts being taken in to consideration? Why is all we hear is that Donny broke in and was shot by the homeowner in self defense? I don’t think people are asking enough questions, and no one cares because Donny has a record. Well so did the guy that murdered him, after inviting him in to his home!
