Gitmo grad arrested in UK
According to the Associated Press, Guantanamo grad school alum Moazzam Begg, class of 2005, was arrested in the United Kingdom for suspicion of terror activities related to Syria;
He was arrested along with a 44-year-old woman, her 20-year-old son, and a 36-year-old man, who are all suspected of facilitating terrorism overseas. Their names were not released.
Police in Britain do not usually name suspects until they are charged. The force said it was identifying Begg to the media “as a result of the anticipated high public interest.”
The four suspects were being questioned at a Birmingham police station, while counterterrorism officers searched their homes.
Begg was arrested in 2002 by Pakistani officers for recruiting for al Qaeda, providing money and training at terrorist camps. But, since he was born in the UK, the Brits intervened on his behalf and got him released back into the wild. The Pentagon, CIA, and FBI had objected, concerned that Begg could still be a dangerous terrorist. Begg returned the favor by suing his native country, the UK, for complicity with the US’ terror war – the UK settled out of court. I guess we know where that money went, huh?

Wow, that catch-and-release program is working very well.
The children’s story of the old woman and the snake comes to mind.
The penalty for any form of Terrorism should be death. Even down to giving them money, or recruiting. We are fighting an insurgency on a worldwide battlefield and the only way to defeat insurgency is to crush it and leave no survivors. These people need to know that if they are caught they will be killed. No exceptions, no mercy. Plot an act, plan an act, commit or even assist, and sure, swift death is your reward. And, perhaps the deaths of all of your family and friends as well.
Nothing even shocks me anymore.
Libs screamed for the “Catch and Release”, they got it… Now we al lget to pay the rpice, and it is only going to get worse over the next several years.
The majority of American voters have soft hearts, short memories, and shallow pockets. Remember the “peace dividends” in 1919, 1946, 1975, 2002, and now 2014. And remember, 12/7/1941 and 9/11/2001. When I walk the cemeteries in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Arlington, Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Hawaii I remember how many suffered because American voters let their military defenses atrophy. And it will happen again; how incredibly sad. How many will die because we let our guard down? How many will die trying to rebuild something that should have been maintained. I wasn’t not yet born in 1941 but my mother was and she remembers. I lived through the Cold War, enlisted in 1970, was I was pretty pissed about 9/11. I have not forgotten. What the hell is wrong with these people? Can’t they read?
I do not even use catch and release unless legally too small when fishing. The terrorists should ever have a free day again. Second offense KIA . Joe
It’s worse than that article makes it sound.
In a *legal* sense, Begg has been keeping his nose clean since his release. He hasn’t actually committed terrorist acts. But he’s been pushing the nonsense that GTMO detainees are innocent, or that they deserve a trial, while at the same time telling radical Muslim groups that the U.S. is in a war against Islam.
His organization CAGE (formerly Cageprisoners) is a “partner” with Amnesty Intl. And when a few decent members of Amnesty (to the extent that they do have a few) had complained, Amnesty said he’s okay because he only advocates “defensive jihad.” (I’m not kidding; they really said that!)
As far as I’m concerned, after that point, there are no longer any members of Amnesty who I don’t first assume to be lying when they claim to oppose torture.
I don’t know why so many liberals tolerate him, but they do.
Isn’t this the same guy that was doing a tour with one of the IVAW guys that was a Gitmo guard?
