Islamists threaten Olympics

| January 20, 2014

Andy sends us a link to an Associated Press article about a video threat made on the Olympics being held in Russia this year. I guess they’re trying to raise the specter of the Munich Olympics which still haunt the West;

In the video, two Russian-speaking men warned President Vladimir Putin that “If you hold these Olympics, we will give you a present for the innocent Muslim blood being spilled all around the world: In Afghanistan, in Somalia, in Syria.”

They added that “for the tourists who come, there will be a present, too.”

In a statement posted with the video on its website, the militant group Vilayat Dagestan claimed responsibility for the Volgograd bombings.

The video claims that the two men, identified as Suleiman and Abdurakhman, were the suicide bombers and purports to show the explosives being prepared and strapped to their bodies.

There was no immediate reaction to the video from the Russian security services.

I’m sure there will be attempts, but security has changed since 1972 and the Russians don’t seem to be restricted in their war against terror by human rights like many western countries. They’ll provide terrorists with many opportunities to martyr themselves.

Wonder if Gidduck is going to be there advising them on sewcurity

Andy

@1, hey, better be careful, he can kill a man at 10 paces with his combat shovel.

OWB

Is that video an invitation for those of us who are offended by it to start a riot some place? Maybe burn a few buildings, shorten the lives of some diplomats?

Oh, wait. It wasn’t about a video…

Yes, they’re so intent on suicide that they wear gloves when they handle that bomb-making stuff.

Gee whiz, if they want to kill themselves that badly, then let’s hold a special event just for all the self-involved ‘martyrs’. The prize can be an attractive amount of money, say $2500 in cash, dollars or euros, plus jackpot entry fees, and whoever is left standing gets to collect, but only as part of his estate.

I would not want to be an Islamic terrorist. I especially would not want to be an Islamic terrorist, caught by the Russian government. While we in America immediately get them a good ACLU lawyer and a warm place to sleep with three hot meals a day. I don’t think the Russians are as lenient in there dealings with terrorists. Heck, look at how they treat one of their own citizens caught for a crime. There is no “alleged” to it. You are guilty until they tell you you’re not. They believe a good jail house beating is simply something every criminal needs just as a “tune-up” before questioning. Not defending their methods. Just wondering how many Russian inmates would trade places with an American inmate in any US facility? I think before the Olympics, there will be a virtual “purging” of anything and anyone who even smells like a terrorist. I can see all the terrorists now, getting rid of their beards and funky clothes and looking like Justin Bieber to avoid the wrath to come.

Russia does have their hands quite full.

They have a lot terrorists to kill over the next 3 weeks.

Let’s see what they do now!

@6 Well I don’t know what they will do but “lawyering up” won’t be one of them. Now if they said they were loading up and going full hot on all weapons, I would believe that. They are not so concerned as we about search and seizure as we are. Especially when it comes to known enemies of the state.

@6. Yeah, round-ups seem to be in order followed by some lengthy Q/A sessions w/o certain legal impediments to methodology. “Ivan, start the generator.”

Just wondering what would happen if all of the media opted not to advertise the threats of these terrorists. I can dream, can’t I?

Vlad P. has told all the gay people to leave the kids alone, because they are all pedophiles. So since Johnny ‘Flameboy’ Weir is going to be doing his flamboyant best to thumb his nostrils at Vlad, I would really like to see how that turns out.

On the news this morning, there was something about moving 30,000 Russian troops to Sochi as security.

Vlad does not want HIS Olympics spoiled. Can’t say as I blame him, considering that the last time the Olympics were held in Russia, it was the USSR and Jimmy ‘the Rabbit’ Carter was the president and made all US athletes stay at home.

Imagine training for years to get to an event like that, only to be told by an idiot who is afraid of rabbits that you can’t go, because he’s afraid you might be ‘captured’ by the Soviet KGB because you have an East European name.

NHSparky

We can only hope. At least then the Russian cops will knock him around, which is more than the cops in this country seem to be willing/able to do.

@5: Yeah, you’re probably right. Most of the “brave” terrorists are going to have a hard time recruiting martyrs for their “jihad” over the next few weeks. Ya ever notice how the ones that send out videos aren’t the ones that are going to blow themselves up, most of the time? Yeah, real brave bunch, those muslim rascals!!

Ex-PH2

Weir is a figure skater, NHSparky.

It’s more likely he won’t get favorable ratings from the judges than anything else. He is an extremely obnoxious little jerk and he milks his gay status as much as he can.

But that could be a meeting that would make Vlad’s head explode.

NHSparky

@13–my comment @11 was directed at O4-E in comment 1. I don’t care one way or the other about teh gheys, so long as it’s not foisted on me or mine.

Guiduck, OTOH, please–go to Sochi. Give them some of your “expert” advice. Please. I need the laughs today.

OWB

Weird, if he goes to the Olympics, will be as a commentator with NBC, PH. Could be very interesting. He is SUCH a fan of the old Soviet Union. Here’s hoping that he just stays there.

He is the poster child of the complete disconnect between leftists and reality.

Hondo

The terrorists considering action in Sochi might want to research an organization called “Alpha Group” first. If they don’t, I’m guessing they stand a good chance of meeting them “up close and personal” should they try something at Sochi.

Ex-PH2

OWB, I thought Flameboy was going to the Olympics as a skater. I had no idea. Man, I am SO behind on keeping up with the USFSA. Just too many other things on my plate.

Thanks for clarifying that, NHSparky, although I would not be surprised to find Flameboy under scrutiny by Vlad’s polizei.

TC

But…Islam is the religion of peace and these folks aren’t true muslims. This one of the few issues i can side with Vlad and the way he does business.

I trust the Russian security services to keep the Olympics safe as far as I can throw them. The key thing to remember here is that what has changed in most countries since the 1972 Munich Olympics is that most countries now have highly dedicated, trained SOF units on hand to handle this stuff. That’s where the Russians fall flat. The Russian Spetsnaz, possible the most overrated fighting force on the entire planet, is charged with being the QRF in case something goes wrong. That’s the problem. For starters, most of them are draftees, and they only serve 2-3 years total. Compare that to a western unit, like the Navy SEALs. They train for 67 weeks from the start of boot camp to the end of SQT when they are awarded their tridents. Then, they do 18 months of pre-deployment training before they deploy, and are officially good enough to handle anything the mischief makers of the world can throw at them. The entire time the Russian Spetsnaz spend in training is reputed to be less than a year by defectors who were formerly part of the unit, like Viktor Suvorov. Then, when they get to their units, they just sit there and rot in garrison, because the Russian military is run on a worn out rotten shoe string, and they can’t train every day like ours can. This shows up in the results of all their operations; look at Beslan and the Moscow Theater Crisis (it doesn’t help that the Russian counter terrorist doctrine focuses more on killing perpetrators then rescuing hostages). And they have to match up against the Chechnians, probably the most capable guerrilla/terrorist force in the world. Russia has tried to crush them with full-on military invasions again and again, and each time they’ve failed. So, while all this is just coming from the mind of a fifteen year old armchair general, if I was an athlete at the Sochi Olympics, I would be afraid. I would be very afraid.

@19 I agree. The Russians, though brutal in their methods, are rather inept at disaster preparedness. If they catch you, it’s bad news. However, it’s the catching them ahead of time in the case of terrorists at which they will fall short. Were I an Israeli athlete, I would be very, very AFRAID. Unless the Russians allow the Israeli’s to bring their own security force for their athletes. Which I doubt. But terrorists just want big body counts. It makes no difference to them who it is in the crowded sports venues. If it is an Israeli or American it is just icing on their cake.

OWB

The IOC has their own means of dealing with security at Olympic events.

David

PH2 – not to worry, it’s not like figure skating is a real sport. Anything that grants points for subjective impressions may be difficult, require athleticism, and even be virtually impossible for a non-trained athlete to do – but unless there is a clear, objective standard for winning or losing, like a score, winning time, etc. – it ain’t a sport.
