Weekend open thread

| December 28, 2013

I’ve got to make another trip to Winchester, Virginia so I’ll be off the network for a bit, so here you go – a thread to discuss what you want, a place to drop off links and talk about your Christmas presents and your recipes.

For all those who LOVE bacon, here is a web site all about bacon and nothing but bacon.

There is no such thing as too much bacon. Or sausage.

A topic for discussion (and I hope John will also address this when he returns):

Over at https://www.facebook.com/BrianKolfage there is a bit of a brush-up going on over some very disparaging remarks posted to the FB page of a disabled veteran.

What worries me is that the disabled vet screen-shots the comments, posts it to FB, and then starts a viral campaign that includes all her personal information so that all of his legions can extract the punishments of their choosing.

What bothers me about this is that a screenshot does not authenticate a person’s identity. We all know that you do not need to show your ID to open a FB account, no matter what name you use.

I worry that what appears to be a cavalier response to the POSSIBILITY of being wrong may blow-back and hurt many veterans should something untoward occur to the alleged insulter.

What do you all think about this?

Sparks

@54 I am not sure I can make out what the jest of the man’s Facebook page is. The only thing bothering me is that he is wearing officer US insignia on his lapels instead of an enlisted man’s. Which is circled US. I would think with his awards and the coverage he has had that he should be “in uniform”. If he is for real and the union woman in question did write those things about disabled vets then she’s got some shit coming her way.

Sparks

@54 I could be wrong. I just did a Google search of USAF enlisted uniforms and I see both collar insignias being worn. But I can’t tell the dates. So perhaps things have changed since I was in. Big never mind I guess.

JackB1701

@55 – There was a protracted period of time when the Air Force issued all of its personnel (officer and enlisted) the non-circled U.S. insignia. The circled U.S. for enlisted personnel only came back into vogue a short while back. I can’t recall the dates, however. If you see an enlisted AF member with a pair of non-circled U.S. on his/her lapels, he/she probably got them before the circled ones made their comeback.

Comrades in Arms:

I just got back from the hospital.

On Christmas Eve, I had a heart attack.

Here are the details:

http://writesong.blogspot.com/2013/12/surviving-my-first-heart-attack.html

Also, I especially appreciatew the THIS AIN’T HELL folks who surprised me with Christmas cards, which I mounted on the wall next to my Christmas tree.

I even got a Christmas card all the way from Plymouth, England, from a guy who had requested me to wish his girlfriend a Happy Birthday, which resulted in this original composition:

Thank you.

Hello, all! I’ve been a lurker for a few years and love this site and love watching you guys comment on the topics of the day (especially the SV stuff and any time you are explaining how things work in the Real Military(tm). I figured an open thread would be a good place to make my first post. I am a former Navy brat and a nearly 15 year member of Civil Air Patrol. Professionally, I am a nurse and an author. I could use help from you folks. I am working on a novel that the folks at Darkquest Publishing have optioned. I’m looking for people to chat with me about life on an aircraft carrier, particularly launch and recovery aspects as well as basic dogfighting skills. I can be reached at chiles@ucwsf.org if you are interested in helping and appreciate the time and thank you for all you do!

Weather is mild, 40’s to 50’s in Albuquerque. I ride my motorcycle every day, and life is pretty good.

@7 Sparks. Thanks for mentioning the Blue Angles, I haven’t seen them in many years. They’re having an Air Show down near Corpus Christi at the end of March, and my brother and I are going to ride down there to see them.

@43 Ex-PH2. I’m hoping you’re planning on giving Vivica a bigger role in your next book 😉

OldSargeUSAR

@58 – JRM: Glad you survived. My two stents, and I, salute you.

@59 – Algore.net ?? WTF?

@61 – JL: Weather is a bit warmer around the SF Bay, so I’m out on my Goldwing everyday, too. Have just ordered new tires.

@ Ex-PH2 – I’m wearing my “Got Bacon” t-shirt and dreaming of a bacon omlette pancake burger at your house one of these fine years! xoxo

@58, John, What a lousy way to spend Christmas. Sorry to hear that. We’re about of the same age I suspect, me being just after the hot stuff in Korea, and you soon after. There is a bit more closeness that I feel with the older folks here than with the younger tigers. Also, I wasn’t infantry but artillery and most of these young Turks were Infantry, with a capital I. Love you all, feel attached to you all, just maybe more so to some than others. Get totally well, John. My thoughts and prayers are with you into the coming new year.

@58

John: I hope the sponge baths were some consolation. 😉

Glad you pulled the cord. Next time if you feel funny at all, pull that cord immediately!

Saw a commercial yesterday that had a drill sergeant barking in the face of a trainee. The kicker is that the DS asks the trainee why he joined up and the trainee replies, ‘To become a cartoonist’ or something like that. The DS responds, in his loud DS voice, ‘That’s outstanding.’ Barf.

Ex-PH2

@63 – Old Sarge, you have two stents and you want a cholesterol-laden breakfast like that? OH, hell, yes!! You only go ’round once in life, so you might as well do it with gusto. And if he can’t make it, call Frank!

@62 -Jmi Legans, B&B#2 is longer than B&B#1. I was getting my feet wet with that one. Viveca, Delilah, and BoomBoom get a lot more time. I do a lot more with things like languages, sharks, and tank jousting. 😉 And did I mention that Whippleworth has an evil cloned twin sister?

OldSargeUSAR

@68 PH2

Yes, I do, darling girl, just like that, and I love the way you think.

Ex-PH2

@69 OldSargeUSAR, I have a recipe for beans in beer with smoked sausage. I have everything except the beer. Next month. There’s a craft beer restaurant near me. I think I’ll pay a visit with that recipe.

And as for cholesterol: corn oil and extra virgin 1st cold pressing olive oil contain plant sterols that block the production of low density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol). Lecithin, from the soybean, dissolves cholesterol. And pectin does the same thing, and comes from fruit.

I eat what I want, not to excess. I’m not dead yet.

Green Thumb

Its called Alabama-style Bean Soup.

OldSargeUSAR

I’ll have to pass on the bean soup, but a NY steak, wrapped in bacon, and a bottle of fine California Cabernet would hit the spot.
Best regards to PH2 & GT (say hello to Phildo the Dildo for me!)….

Green Thumb

@72.

And maybe you can accompany your dinner with a glass of “Phildo Grigio”?

Just kidding.

Be safe.

NEED HELP FROM THE NAVY. (Man, that hurt.)

My late mother-in-law was in the Navy in WWII. I have one of her dog tags. It’s rather oval, not rectangular, and has two holes (no notches) on each end. Her name and service number are listed, followed by this:

T5/43
USNR -A-

What, if anything, does that mean to you? I thought that USNR was reserve but, it seems, the WAVES were USNR. I don’t get the T5 or the -A-

Ex-PH2

2/17AirCav, I’m guessing about this, but I’d say -A- means blood type.

This is the best reference I could find, but it’s for the Army

1st Line first name of soldier, 2nd initial, surname CLARENCE R JONES
2nd Line army serial number, tetanus, tetanus toxoid), blood type 37337566 T42 43 0

3rd Line name next of kin FRED JONES
4th Line address, number, street, next of kin 2843 FEDERAL BL
5th Line address, city, state + religion DENVER COLO P

So I’d say, without further information, that T5/43 means she had a vaccination for tetanus toxoid (43) and something else, possibly smallpox.

2/17 Air Cav

Hmmm. Okay. It’s difficult to find an old salt who was around in WWII. The tags are waaaaaaay different from ours but are legit.

OldSargeUSAR

@72

Hello, GT

“Phildo Grigio” sounds like a sissy white wine to me. Have to pass, and stay with Big Red.
I’m betting bedwetters Psul & Phildo the Dildo would split a bottle of that sissy stuff.

Best regards for 2014

Ex-PH2

This might explain why some of the people you run into seem to be unable to communicate in a comprehensible way.

Ex-PH2

I’m putting this link here because our Glorious Leader hasn’t put up the New Year’s Eve thread yet, so that he can go and get soused with out embarrassing himself in public.

This article is about MSNBC’s crew of looney-tunes making fun of Romney’s newly-adopted grandchild. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/12/30/msnbc-panel-makes-fun-of-romney-photo-with-black-grandchild/comment-page-26/

This discussion is from this morning on Fox:

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=msnbc+crew+makes+fun+of+romney's+grandchild&FORM=VIRE6#view=detail&mid=8E51C471FF2651163D5E8E51C471FF2651163D5E

I don’t know what the hell is wrong with those people at MSNBC, but they are becoming more and more crass, vulgar and dusgusting as time goes by. They aren’t funny. They aren’t even able to distinguish between reality and their fantasies any more, and I don’t understand what it is that motivates them to keep up this asinine dialogue that they spit out.

At least in this case, it’s coming home to roost, right on their heads.

2/17 Air Cav

Ex- You are correct. I just found the official 1941 Navy bulletin that establishes the dogtags, AND how to produce them.

Ex-PH2

Thank you, AirCav, and have a Happy New Year tonight!

2/17 Air Cav

@81. Thanks. You too. I will be home all evening and, absent a very good football game, asleep by 10 or so. I am not, and never have been, a sparkly hat kind of guy. If I get drunk, it is for a damn good reason and a change of year does not rate for me.
