US & Iran united against terror
The Washington Times reports that the Obama Administration sees an opportunity to help Iran fight terrorists. No, this isn’t satire, really. But after the al-Qaeda attack against an Iranian embassy in Beirut the other day, the Obama advisers think that gives us something in common with Iran. Something other than us being a target of Iran-sponsored terror, I suppose;
“The United States knows too well the cost of terrorism directed at our own diplomats around the world, and our hearts go out to the Iranian people after this violent and unjustifiable attack claimed the life of at least one of their diplomats,” Secretary of State John F. Kerry said in a statement.
An al Qaeda-linked group based in Lebanon claimed responsibility for explosions that killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 140.
The attack in Beirut may add either a layer of complexity or help along the high-stakes international talks over Iran’s nuclear program slated to reopen in Geneva on Wednesday.
“I think from the side of the West, this was a way to show consistency and sympathy to the Iranians when they’ve been targeted by al Qaeda,” said Trita Parsi, who heads the National Iranian American Council. “It’s a way for the U.S. to repeat their claim or assertion that the U.S. is against terrorism, no matter who it targets.”
The Obama administration has spent recent days struggling to overcome congressional resistance to a plan that would allow for a selective easing of some U.S. economic sanctions against Iran, in exchange for explicit assurances that Tehran will scale back its nuclear program and open it to intense international inspections.
Um, I’m not sure, but I think that Iran is actually part of the terrorism problem. Iran armed and advised al Qaeda in Iraq when they were fighting against American troops and I’ll bet there’s evidence that they support the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. And, oh, yeah, they’re trying to develop nuclear weapons despite opposition from nearly every country on the planet, including some of Iran’s neighbors.

Welcome to Bizarro world people, where our enemies are now our friends.
All thanks to the Diplomatic skills of John “reporting for duty” Kerry and Barack “if you like your plan you can keep it” Obama. How can you tell they are lying?? Why, their lips are moving!!!
Wonder how this is going to work out?? I mean, what could go wrong??
Well, not only are they developing nuclear weapons, but also, Iran is rapidly becoming a major manufacturer of little things like helicopter gunships and warships and other assorted weapons of warfare. They really appear to be gearing up for a major war.
Or am I the sole soul paying attention to this?
Wait — if we’re friendly with Iran, does that mean we can buy cheaper oil from them?
What a bunch of tools.
Jonn do you have anything to support your allegation that Iran armed AQIA? I would be very interested to see some of you can point me in that direction. My understanding was that Iran supplied arms to Shi’ite insurgents only. Iran would not want AQIA to succeed in Iraq because they want a Shia ally on their border, not another Sunni adversary. If they were arming AQ then we really are fighting a wat against a united Islam that wants to destroy us.
I am trying to figure out how to reasonably respond to something I swear has got to be coming from the Onion or the Duffleblog…
11B #4; Sure; http://www.nbcnews.com/id/8829929/#.UozVbCfeLHg
See the paragraph; Iran’s Shiite government has also struck up a seemingly strange alliance with Sunni insurgents to try to drive the American military out of Iraq.
Now B. Hussein 0bama wants to trust a nation that has repeatedly screamed “Death to America”. I am now convinced that there is no end to his ineptitude and incompetence! That, or he hates the USA as much as the Iranian mullahs do, and I don’t doubt that, either!
Iran is learning the trouble with terrorists is that they always have to have someone to hate and someone to kill….once the Americans leave the jihadists have to kill other muslims for real or imagined grievances against their magic man in the sky who sees all and hates everyone but muslims…islam is not a religion of peace. The biggest propaganda in this century is that we are not at war with islam, perhaps we do not realize it but islam is in fact at war with us. The sooner we recognize that the better off we all are. There is no benefit to this relationship, just another example of the inexperience in Washington exposing itself for all to see.
VOV: sadly, I fear you’re right.
Samuel Huntington made essentially that same observation, in both Clash of Civilizations and elsewhere, some 15 years ago.

Jonn, Hondo, VOV et al … As a vert smart PhD. gal at Joint SPEC OPS University told a class I was taking a few years back, “don’t be fooled … it is about the oil and religion!”
Of course, a military instructor probably would not go that far … but that is why they employ some pretty friggin’ smart PhDer’s down there!
@9 Seems like a book I should be reviewing soon…thank you….
Thanks Jonn, very interesting…
