Jerome P. Burney and his victimless crime

Jerome P Burney

The Associated Press reports that Jerome P. Burney ripped off well-meaning employers who would plan to pay deployed employees while they were serving in the military. However the forty-year-old was NOT in the military. His little scheme netted him more than $363,000 in pay from May 2004 to August 2008;

Forty-year-old Jerome P. Burney pleaded guilty Monday to one count of wire fraud. The Journal Gazette reported that Burney’s plea agreement calls for him to make restitution to several companies he had bilked as part of his scheme.

Federal prosecutors say Burney sought jobs with companies that would pay employees being deployed as part of their military service the difference between their military pay and their employer pay.

From Fort Wayne.com

Burney applied for jobs at area companies, unnamed in court documents, which provided military pay differential policies.

Those policies offered employees who were deployed with the Army National Guard or other branches of the service an amount of money equal to the difference in their base rate of pay at their employer and the amount of money they would be paid by the military during their deployment, according to court documents.

Burney would then fax military deployment orders to his employers, saying he would be away from his job beginning on a certain date and continuing for up to a year, with the possibility that the deployment could be extended for an additional year, according to court documents.

He also told his employers he had some military training from time to time that would also require he be away from his job and he would again be provided with the differential pay, according to court documents.

The orders were fraudulent and Burney was not a member of the military, according to court documents.

After a period of time with one particular company, Burney would leave and go to another company that offered the same benefit, according to court documents.

This phony fucktard should be made to pay every cent back, no matter how long it takes and how hard it becomes; his wages should be garnered for life after he is released from prison…

PintoNag

I’d vote to have him branded and put out on the street to eat out of garbage cans for the rest of his life.

Old Tanker

What the hell kind of jobs was this guy getting? He was making $90k/year and that was supposed to be a DIFFERENTIAL between his “real pay” and his “Guard pay” I want to work for those companies and I’m out, so I’ll never deploy….Any of these people need a guy with a Chemistry degree with 15 years of Metallurgy and Quality Experience? I’ll be glad to work for $90k….and actually show up!

chockblock

Remember, it’s his “freedom of speech” or some junk. Don’t drop the soap Jerome!

rb325th

What a worthless piece of shit… put him to work cutting lawns on military bases with a pair of nail trimmers to repay his debt!

CBSenior

How hesitant now will those companies be to keep offering that benefit to REAL Military members. How many companies will now either drop the program or never offer it.

Victimless Crime my ASS. We all know it isn’t.

Green Thumb

Dude is going for the LL Cool J look.

Twist

@3OT; I think he would get a job and then “deploy” and then get another job while he was “deployed” and then “deploy” again and then get another job etc. etc. etc.

Stolen Valor or no, this is fraud which once again proves that liars tend to step up their game from simple lies for drinks and sex to lies for money and property…

Not all liars are criminals, but all criminals are liars…

He played his game for over four years! He was charged with five counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud. After he had his little skull session with the prosecutor, he reportedly pleaded guilty to a single count of wire fraud. (In the absence of a tax charge, I guess he paid taxes on the fraudulently obtained funds. Sure, that’s likely.) Oh, and he was released originally without bond by the federal magistrate. A regular pillar of the community he must be. If he actually had been prosecuted and convicted of each count, he was exposed to 20 years x 5 and a fine of $250,000 X 5. Other than the deal provision that he is to make restitution (sure, thing), I can find no mention of an actual sentence of incarceration. Nor can I find him on the US Attorney’s (Northern District of Indiana) where they ballyhoo their convictions.

Old Tanker

Twist,

I would think you’re right but this is the part that got me….

After a period of time with one particular company, Burney would leave and go to another company that offered the same benefit, according to court documents.

USMCE8Ret

Shitbag.

As part of his sentence: After he gets out of prison, he should be forced to join the military and be deployed to a place he’s certain to be fired upon, and be forced to pay back all that money he earned while he’s there.

(Yes folks, I know that ain’t gonna happen…)

The companies who were duped don’t want to be named. I don’t blame them. Their HR departments need a housecleaning.

Torinojom

@3 Hey Old Tanker, check out Gulfstream.com/careers. We that are still in get paid a differential if we get put on orders. We’re actually doing a veteran appreciation luncheon tomorrow. Great company to work for, and the money isn’t bad either.

This is from the Article that Guardian of Valor posted.

“As part of his plea agreement, Burney must make restitution to a number of companies, including Cargill, Caterpillar, Unilever, Lincoln, Dana Driveshaft and Red Gold, according to court documents.”

Pastor watch what you say

Hello folks! I know this is a bad situation, however that is why we ALL need a savior!!!! No one is perfect, yes, not even you!!!! The bible says all have sinned!!! God Bless

John Ray

I agree with Pastor watch what you say.. If Jerome repented, and pays his debt. Who are you to judge? Everyone has done wrong, it’s all sin. Jerome if you see this, I will be praying for you and your family.

NHSparky

Thorntown, Indiana sockpuppets.

I hate Indiana sockpuppets.

Hondo

Pastor/John Ray: this is a military discussion forum, not a religious discussion forum. How about you take that discussion elsewhere.

And as you leave, a parting thought for ya: “Thou shalt not lie.” Seems to me I once read that in a Good Book filled with much Wisdom.

Sock puppetry, by definition, is lying.

PintoNag

They wouldn’t know the truth if they fell over it, and all the Bible quotes in the world won’t change that.

Jerome Burney

As you can see, I do not run from my bad choices, I understand everyone’s anger at what I have done. I served in the military for 8 years and I forgot everything that I was taught. Yes , I lied and took what was not earned. Everyone is in the process of being made WHOLE!!!! All companies listed were not violated, if you want more details I’m not hard to find.

OWB

If you did serve, then you know what we expect from you. If not, well, then, whatever.

Jerome Burney

There is no “IF” sir, I did. But understand what you’re saying!

Retired Master

#22 & 24) There is an “IF”. For your sake I hope you can prove that you did serve. From what I have read here, you have no military creds. Everyone has records regardless of when and where even if you never made it out of basic. You say you served eight years, time to put your money where your mouth is and stop playing games.

No records, means it never happened!!

Your call!

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Pastor Ray, perhaps you need to revisit Deuteronomy:

To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

I suspect Jerome’s foot slid and his calamity is indeed at hand, the thing coming upon him in haste is payment due for transgression against god and man…but you already knew that.

ChipNASA

@22 JB Horseshit.

@25 Master – Don’t hold your breath.

@22. For the moment, I’m going to assume that you are this guy but you could be anyone just having some fun. But, heck, even posers know to pretend to be the good guy, not the criminal. So, I’d say the odds are with me. First, stop telling people you were in the military, even if it’s true. I don’t ask you to lie, just don’t volunteer it, the same way you don’t volunteer what other crimes you have committed. Third, can that “made whole” stuff. That’s restitution legal speak. You did more harm than steal. Hell, someone may have been fired or disciplined for accepting your bullshit. And, of course, there’s the loss trust–reflected on all citizen soldiers, thank you very much. Fourth, is it your position that you did not know theft was wrong before you were taught that in service, or were you referring to something else when you said you forgot what the military taught you? Lastly, no one here wants to find you so can that too.

A Proud Infidel

@5, HELL YEAH, and better yet, make him do it while in MOPP4 and in the Low Crawl!!

A Proud Infidel

P. S., HEY BURNEY, don’t forget to say “WEEEEEEEeee,… for Bubba & Thor when you bend over to pick up the soap!!!

John Ray

My husband served in the military and you know what, I don’t agree with the things Burney did, however he still doesn’t deserve the horrible things you people are saying about him.

NHSparky

The fuck he doesn’t. His actions have fucked over and will continue to fuck over companies now that they’ll change their policies to no longer cover the difference between military and their current compensation.

YN1/DEPUTY

they should just take this turd to Kabul and drop him off in the city center. What a chucklehead.
