Marine cover controversy

I’m not saying this is something, I’m just addressing it because the media is addressing it. But the New York Post writes that it’s Obama’s fault that the Corps might change their head gear, which makes me think it’s just a line of shit. I don’t think that the president has anything to do with it;

Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a “unisex” look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps with a new hat that some have derided as so “girly” that they would make the French blush.

“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!” one senior Marine source fumed to The Post. “The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.”

The thin new hats have a feminine line that some officials think would make them look just as good on female marines as on males — in keeping with the Obama directive.

Whether the story is true or not, and I tend to think it’s not, I know I wouldn’t wear that silly-looking thing on my head. I’m pretty sure that the ladies have to pin it to their head to keep it there because it just looks like it fall off constantly. If it’s true, the Marines should ask “Black Beret” Shinseki how changing head gear works out for their career. Also, if it’s all true, Marines are going to get the hat;

Marine Corps head Gen. James Amos will make the final decision.

And, if it’s all true, you know which way Amos will go. But the whole thing sounds like New York Post horseshit to me.

@47: The biggest sin of the ASU was getting rid of SSI’s (Shoulder Sleeve Insignias.) SSI’s have been a unique and distinctive part of US army uniforms since WW1 and it is the only part of the US Army uniform that I have heard members of other services say they wish they had

Speaking of which, I always wonder what the Marines think when they see a soldier walk by with a 1st or 2nd MarDiv right sleeve patch. I had thought those were unauthorized but I checked the AR for myself and they are legit.

@51 – If I see a soldier wearing a 1st or 2d MarDiv patch, I know they were tested, and earned it.

I tell them “Thank you”, and will buy them a beer if the occasion warrants it.

@22,30,49 – when in Germany in the early ’80s we had coed floors and coed showers. Rooms were segregated by sex but the floors had mens or womens rooms mixed up and down the corridor. There were TALL brick partitions between showers and the doors blocked any view of the interior – so you never knew who was in the next shower and frankly didn’t care. Bathrobes en route to/from showers were mandatory. I only heard of one guy busted peeking over a partition but there was no formal disciplinary action – apparently he fell down the stairs a few times educationally. Never heard of a sexual assault or problem… would have been like picking a fight with a woman who had 40 brothers.

Fuck you, Obama. Fuck you, Amos

NO nought Hell NO! too many changes already. Enough already, we MARINES ARE SEEING OUR TRADATIONS AND CORPS TORN APART. I SAY NO MORE PERIOD. Joe

This from the same “good idea fairy” that brought you aquaflage, etc.

@58: I think it’s just giving the Corps a little taste of what the Army and Navy have been dealing with for years. Official motto of the uniform boards: “Fixing what isn’t broke since 1945.”

NHSparky

I mean, go ahead and laugh at the dungarees we used to wear, but damned if they weren’t actually FUNCTIONAL. And when they were fire-resistant, they STAYED that way for a lot longer than the aquaflage.

One of the nice things about being on a boat…underway is poopy suits, in port was dungarees, and if you had to wear whites (or blues, depending on location) it was a rare occasion. I don’t think I bought a single dress uniform after I bought the CNT whites in A-school.

Hondo

NHSparky: CNT? Those wouldn’t stand for Certified Navy Twill, would it? (smile)

The Other Whitey

@42 That’s what the FDNY wears in New York City, but that’s about it. Few other fire departments in America use that style hat for their dress blues, because it looks like ass. Of course we generally only wear our dress uniforms for funerals and St. Paddy’s parades, otherwise they rarely see the light of day.

Uniforms vary between fire departments. There are a few out there that try to look like Marine dress blues (my department is not one of them), but most don’t.

@62. So do the trainmen on the LIRR.

Tactical Trunk Monkey

We received our survey about this, in our office…it is the “Dan Daly” cover, SgtMaj Daly wore this, and he was a bad ass…however, it is the current cover of our females.

How about we not change anything…if it’s not broken…

Look at that pussy wearing that hat. Shit, he’s only got three medals on too. Don’t you get like three medals for graduating boot?

Redacted1775

#66, That goes against what this institution has been doing for centuries: If it ain’t broke, fix it until it is…

Got an few emails on this from a group of retired Marines, one Jonn knows as MARINEVET from the old HC site. He is connected to many including Amos. Mrs. Amos sent an email to this stating that it is baloney. They are looking for a new supplier of hats for women Marines as the company they get from now is going out of business. That’s all. I trust this info. Problem is, we all weren’t surprised by this if it had been true. That’s scary!

El Marco

somebody needs a shift kick in the pants. Either an acquisition type at HQ USMC or the reporter who failed to check his/her/it’s sources.

Oh silly me. That’ll never happen.

Boots

I think they should wear hats that look like a jar- after all they’re nknown as “Jarheads.” Semper-Fi

CWORet

@51 – No problem at all. The soldiers I worked with in Iraq seemed mighty proud to have earned it. As for the ‘hat’ I’m going to vote for it! Why? Because I’m retired and I won’t have to wear it. The green wienie strikes again!!!

CWO5USMC

As long as we’re f@cking sh!t up royally, instead of the white dress cover…I vote for the white doo-rag with a be-dazzled rank insignia…LOL

Definately time to retire….

http://www.stripes.com/news/us/marine-corps-pulls-uniform-survey-after-loud-and-clear-opposition-1.249171

‘The Marine Corps Uniform Board has pulled its survey of options for a gender-neutral dress and service cover after widespread negative reaction to one of the options, which has been slammed as “girly” and “appalling.”

On Thursday, several news outlets published stories asserting that President Obama was trying to emasculate male Marines by forcing a change to their dress and service covers, and incorrectly wrote that men and women in the Marine Corps currently wear the same style of cover.’

Green Thumb

I am actually surprised the “Army of One” is not knee-deep in this idea.

Just give it time….

NHSparky

Listen up, people–unless and until ya’ll start wearing white dog food bowls on your head, quitcherbitchin!

TN

“It all stemmed from a survey to active and Reserve Marines about the best option for a universal cover — a cap that would be worn by men and women.”
““While there was never any desire or intent to change the male Marine dress cover, the feedback we have received has been heard, loud and clear,” Murphy said.”
““The Marine Corps commandant had and has zero intention of changing the male cover,” Marine officials said.”

Quotes from Stars and Stripes (above). It seems the Marines need to get their story straight before going to press. Either they were looking for a “universal, unisex” cover, or there wasn’t. Either they were considering changing the male cover, or they weren’t considering the “Dan Daly” cover.

And General Amos, don’t send your wife out to make claims for you. Either you are the Commandant or you’re not. You wear the stars, even if she wears the pants. And if you don’t want the Troops’ opinions, don’t freakin’ ask them to waste their time to give it to you.

TN

Oh yeah, one more thing: just because the manufacturer is going out of business does not mean the Marines are *forced* to change the headgear. The Corps could more easily find a new manufacturer, using the same specs.

In short, I do not believe this was a “fictional” concept that was misreported (at least not entirely). I believe it was a stupid idea that received such backlash that the Commandant denied it was being considered, just like politicians do when they get caught.

I don’t believe the POTUS personally selected the hat to be voted on, but I do believe his directives to make the military “gender neutral” were indirectly responsible.

Anonymous

Oh, jeez, just have the females wear the male cover– the “Dan Daly cover” was ghey in ’18.

Anonymous

I for one welcome the new gender neutral cover. Should go nicely with the new pantaloons or optional kilt.
