“Artist” arrested for defacing 9-11 memorial
Andy sends a link from The Advertiser about local artiste Salvador Perez Jr. who thought it would be cool to deface the 9-11 Memorial in Lafayette, Louisiana on, you know, 9-11.
Police were notified at 8 a.m. Wednesday that two cardboard cutout images of crashing planes and former President George W. Bush holding a remote control had been placed on the 9/11 Memorial.
The planes were marked “NWO,” a reference to the New World Order conspiracy theory — the Eye of Providence and the initials “NWO.” For some, this theory includes the belief that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by the U.S. government. Next to the monument was a cutout of Bush holding a remote control in one hand and a fist full of money in the other, police said.
I’m sure his defense will be somewhere along the lines of the contention that his First Amendment rights supersede our First Amendment rights, because he’s an artiste, and the proletariat should just feel honored that he graced us with his towering intellect. Obviously the people of Lafayette, LA take their memorial seriously. It was dedicated on 9-11-02 and they put a lot of thought into it;
The local monument is a smaller scale of both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The structure includes three beams from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon, and soil from the Shanksville, Pa., field in which Flight 93 crashed.

I unfriended several family/friends yesterday from my Facebook because of their conspiracy theory beliefs of 9/11. I like to surround myself with people who don’t wear tin foil hats while watching TV in the dark.
There are certain things that you never do, no matter if it is or is not legal. This was one of those things. Ass hole.
the greatest thing about growing up in south louisiana (about 90 min west of lafayette) is the patriotism. everyone loves their country and is happy to step up and fight for her. this little douche nozzle should be happy he was arrested, it will save him much pain and probably his life. of course, now he is stuck in a La county jail. he does know that we hired steven segal as a sheriff, right?

If I were an attorney (and I’m not), and I were representing Salvador Perez, Jr. in court (which I’m not), I would argue that it was NOT “vandalism”, because the displayed attachments were designed to be merely temporary, made only of cardboard, and easily removed.
No permanent damage was intended or effected.
@10: And the counterargument would be that the attachments were not authorized and he didn’t ask permission before trespassing and committing his act of vandalism.
And if I were able to “counsel” this young man, who is obviously trying to turn his life around, I’d counsel him with a maple or oak clue bat. If/when the police showed up to intervene, my defense would be that my actions were “performance art”.
Unlike the young man in question, I happen to have legitimate “artist” credentials. Two, it seems, can play at his game.

Whenever I see something like this I am reminded of Johnny Cash, who in a concert one time talked about how proud he was to be an American and to come home to this country. Enough! Idiots who deface memorials deserve no consideration at all. From any of us. They demand that their exhibits, no matter how distasteful, must be allowed in public. They never seem to “get” that it’s a two-way street.
Leave the memorials alone! All of them.
And should I run across an exhibit of this person’s ‘art’, I would view it first, and subsequently decide whether or not it was worth the coin for materials and the effort to add my own graffiti to it.

The memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2002 and consists of two 13-foot sections of heat-twisted I-beams from the Twin Towers. Its base is pentagon-shaped, made from limestone taken from the Pentagon debris. The local firefighters who gathered at the monument yesterday for a service were not happy to hear what Perez had done overnight to the memorial. One of them has a tattoo that honors the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11. Yeah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have a feeling that something else will soon be in Perez’s eye. By the way, the ar-teest was reportedly arrested for shoplifting at Lowe’s last June.
I am a damn artist and have the education and lamb skin to prove it. This guy need to have it attitude adjusted and I would be happy to help with that by placing a boot up his ass!
Art is fine. Even if you want to do some conspiracy, nut job art. But make YOUR OWN DAMN WORK! Don’t vandalize someone else’s creation and then say “it’s my art”. It only demands that you show up for class. As my brother’s wife, a retired schoolteacher, told me about a decade ago, the children are not corrected or told they are spelling things incorrectly, nor do they get grades any longer.
Oh, yeah – the Chicago School System, which has a teachers’ union sucking tax money by the boatload out of taxpayers, has recently been shown to have the LOWEST test scores in English, math and science in the state and somewhere around 159th lowest for the US.

However, Perez was charged in June by the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office with one count of theft under
$500, allegedly for stealing from a Lowe’s store in March, according to 15th Judicial District Court records.
