Jailbreak in Iraq
JB sends us a link to the BBC which tells the tale of a massive prison break at Abu Ghraib during which about 500 prisoners were released and 20 or so Iraq government soldiers were killed on Sunday night;
Mortar fire and suicide bombs were used to gain access to the jails, whose inmates include al-Qaeda prisoners.
At least 20 members of the security forces were killed as they struggled to regain control.
A senior Iraqi MP, Hakim Al-Zamili, said that about 500 prisoners had escaped from the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
Most of them were senior members of al-Qaeda who had been sentenced to death, he told Reuters news agency.
“It’s obviously a terrorist attack carried out by al-Qaeda to free convicted terrorists with al-Qaeda,” the agency quoted an unnamed security official as saying.
But I was told that the only reason that people were killing each other in Iraq is because the US had troops there. Well, what’s the excuse now? And if anyone needed a reason to not send those terrorists we’re holding in Guantanamo back to these countries, this is a stark example of why we shouldn’t do that.
At about the same time,, a convoy near Mosul was attacked with a car bomb and an out post also near Mosul was attacked and several more Iraqi government troopers were killed.

The explosion was very impressive.
“Sentenced to death,” huh? I wouldn’t think that an appeal would take very long in the primitive bureaucracy of Iraq. Now that I think about it, I’m surprised that appeals are even available.
If appeals are NOT a feature of Iraq’s judicial system, then this mass escape is actually a mass release. That wouldn’t surprise me much.
More people Obama has to work to employ. Couldn’t they just accept that their emprisonment was being paid by real American taxpayers?
I’m so confused by those postings… Anyhoo, they just don’t like each other and can’t play nice.
Oh Great! News yesterday that as many as 80 of the Gitmo terrorists might be paroled after hearings held to determine if they are safe to release. I think this pretty much replies in the negative.
Why did we go there? Oh yeah, WMDs….and since that didn’t work out, they changed it to “Operation Iraqi Freedom.”
When that didn’t work out, we left.
They are too backwards and en-bread to do anything normal
Saddam kept them from killing each other with an iron fisted rule…now that we are introducing a kinder, gentler Iraq there will be more dead people…
cue Afghanistan to follow shortly…
I kept hearing the guy say “God Willing, God Willing”. Problem is they are all reading from the same God Willing book. Yea it was our fault Iraqis were killed when we were there. Now what is the excuse. Until the Iraqis find and kill all the AQ and Taliban in their borders they are lost and doomed to go back to Taliban rule. So now there are 500 more notorious AQ’s on the loose to keep doing what they love they best…kill everyone that doesn’t agree with their interpretation of the Koran. Whether they be fellow countrymen, family or Americans.
@7 Thank you. I forgot that Afghanistan is next to play on the top ten list of favorites for Taliban rule.
For people who didn’t like Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, they sure seem to be in a hurry to put them back in power again.
If the want to be governed by the Taliban and Sharia law, let ’em. They can either have the guts and use the billions in weapons we left them to stand up to AQ and the Taliban or be cowards and live as cowards do. We had a little problem with living under the thumb of a foreign power determined to make us their country. We had a little thing called the Revolutionary War and defeated the greatest military power of its day. For freedom! That freedom cost the one price it always costs…blood. Let Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and all the other Muslim countries, man up and do the same. If and it’s a big if, they truly want their own, self earned freedom. Freedom bought with American blood will not last. Each nation, people or tribe has to offer up their own blood.
