Sulaiman Abu Ghaith visits NYC

| March 8, 2013

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, the son-in-law of Osama bin Laden, is making an appearance in a New York City court after being captured in Jordan last week or so according to Fox News;

The case marks a legal victory for President Barack Obama’s administration, which has long sought to charge senior al-Qaida suspects in American federal courts instead of military tribunals at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But it runs counter to demands by Republicans in Congress who do not want high-threat terror suspects brought into the United States.

The Department of Justice said Abu Ghaith was the spokesman for al-Qaida, working alongside bin Laden and current leader Ayman al-Zawahri, since at least May 2001. Abu Ghaith is a former mosque preacher and teacher.

Yay! Big victory for the Obama Administration! We get to offer a thug the same rights as an American in our courts.

In 2002, under pressure as the U.S. military and CIA searched for bin Laden, Abu Ghaith was smuggled into Iran from Afghanistan, prosecutors said.

But, Iran is a country that we deal with we heard more than four years ago in the campaign.

Friday nooze…anything the Obama administration wants swept under the rug, they announce on Friday, preferably after lunch.

Well, Holder got his wish. Terrorists are being tried in NYC. Sleep well, Bloomy. Don’t let the fact every jihadi with a scimitar to grind wants to make his “dune-cred” by doing something spectacular, stupid, and probably deadly/damaging in your town in the name of Bin Laden and Allah keep you awake at night. No, you keep after those Big Gulps, ya fuckin tard.

A_Proud_Infidel

BINGO, Sparky!

2/17 Air Cav

No, this is no reason to believe that anyone will be targeted by some actual or would-be terrorist out of Jersey or Detroit. I am sure that the gang who couldn’t shoot straight will provide ample security for all. A great and wonderful victory it is! Hail obamaman! Hail Holder. They can all go straight to Hell.

Fatcircles0311

Yay for the next 50 years well be makin sure he gets a balanced diet, plays handball, gets access to cable tv, and a warm bed.

Thanks Obama!

Veritas Omnia Vincit

So wait, we are making sure this 4ssclown gets a lawyer and a chance to defend himself after we captured him on foreign soil…but Holder says under the right circumstances Americans who are guaranteed those rights might be summarily executed by a robot?

Did I miss something in all this?

Stacy0311

at least he won’t be able to get a Big Gulp…..

VOV–silly man, you weren’t supposed to notice!

Off to the camps with you, just as soon as Deville Patrick clears the path to your door.

USMCE8Ret

What? No drone strike?

Why isn’t that ass-clown down in Gitmo with the other camel jockey terrorists?!

EX-PH2

VOV – Bingo! You win this round!

Mayor Bloomberbutt is more interested in how loud people play music on their iPods than he is in whether or not there’s a terrorist in the city.

PintoNag

We have time to waste with this moron? Like there aren’t a bunch more lined up waiting to take his place in the organization?

An interrogation and double-tap is all the justice this piece of slime should have.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Fact … they are brought here to NYC because the original charges and documents, best investigators and US attorneys, largest FBI JTTF, and the most experienced teams are here in NYC.

I know that perhaps if some of us had our way … but the reality is Southern and Eastern Districts know how to get this job done!

Hondo

No argument from me that the Federal DoJ and LE authorities in NYC aren’t competent, MCPO.

What I want to know is why this guy didn’t go straight to GITMO for some at-length interrogation, followed by incarceration there for the duration.

IMO this establishes a very bad precedent regarding how to treat terrorists detained overseas – one we’ll regret.

USMCE8Ret

@11 – That may be so, but I would think that a .98 cent .40 round properly placed in the middle forhead while they had him in Turkey would have saved a lot of money and taken care of things quite nicely.

We’re in a bad economy, don’t you know?

2/17 Air Cav

@11. When the terrorist action targets Queens, or Nassau county because all of the security focus is on the jail or courthouse elsewhere, I’ll be interested in what your take on it is then.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

As I said, “I know that perhaps if some of us had our way …”

Personally, a CIA operative ensuring a 22 cal behind the right ear, in a lonely dark alley, in a crappy foreign counrty would have done it for me!

2/17 Air Cav

I wonder how many secret medals will be awarded for this clown’s capture. I am sure PBS is already working on the documentary of how obamaman planned and excuted the operation. Bastards. Bengahazi still lingers. The government employees who survived the attack remain off limits. And we’re to be happy that obama brought home a terrorist bastard, exposing our folks to retributive action by others? Bastards.

EX-PH2

I keep wanting to send these people to their own planet and get them off mine.

CC Senor

White House tours are closed down and we’re going to spend how many millions for the circus this guy’s trial in NYC will become?

PintoNag

If they brought him to NYC with all this fanfare, you can just believe their motives are far from pure. Are they trying to provoke an attack INSIDE the US? For what reason? Perhaps to declare martial law? Or perhaps they intend to use him as an international bargaining chip? Perhaps with the House of Saud? Or back door negotiations of some type with Al-Qaida?

martinjmpr

Unless they captured him 6 months ago, there’s no way they’ve extracted all the valuable intelligence out of this guy. I don’t give a crap where he’s tried (or even if he’s tried) but it would piss me off to think that we had a highly placed asset in our hands and didn’t squeeze him for all the info he could give up.

2/17 Air Cav

Here’s an update. He entered a plea of not guilty this morning. That’s good enough for me. If he says he’s not guilty, he must be not guilty. What I want to know is this: If he’s found not guilty or a delay –say, one caused by a sympathetic terrorist attack–occurs that prevents a speedy trial, will we return him to Jordan? Just wondering how this will work, given the chances obamaman and Holder are taking with the lives of others in this their great victory.

Dirt Dart

What F*#@ STICK thought that this was good idea- who ever said lets try him in a Domestic court should have his or her skull emtiped and filled with straw so at least they have a sembalence of an excuse. I swear these people are as useful as a No Choke Shotgun in a Sniper compitition…

Leaves too much open for hey lets hit this court and bust a freind out or set this building up fpr a jihad and martydom-0r was security for the normal folk even taken into consideration?!?

2/17 Air Cav

Hey, watch it DirtDart! That’s President F*#@STICK and Mr. Attorney General F*#@STICK to you!

Eggs

@ #5 VOV – Yup, he’s probably represented by Holder’s former law firm.

Hondo

MCPO: unfortunately, what you suggest – though viscerally satisfying – wouldn’t give us much of a chance to extract Intel from the SOB. And as martinjmpr observes, unless he’s been in friendly hands for a loooong time, we almost certainly haven’t gotten all he knows.

And, unfortunately, civilian incarceration won’t give us a decent chance to do that either.

2/17 Air Cav

Unless an independent operator takes unilateral action, it will take weeks and weeks for a terrorist response to this fiasco. The clock is now ticking. I am sure that the radiation detectors are working overtime in NYC but I seriously doubt that ground zero will be the courthouse or jail he’s being held. I am no chicken little but it seems to me that this is an open invitation for retaliation. And what we we to do, complain to the UN? This may end up being the fuse that lights the rebellion. This is not going to go well or end well but the media will be also working overtime to sing the obamaman’s songs. Okay, I’m done–but this one is bothering me a great deal.

77 11C20

I wonder who his attorneys will be. Could it be Holder’s old law firm before he was appointed AG and will the US goverment going to pick up the full tab? Just wondering.

Flagwaver

The moment he was taken into custody, they probably Mirandized him. So, unless he gives up his rights as accorded to him by the President-in-Dictat and his stooge in Justice, I doubt our Intel Assets will ever even be allowed to see video footage of this guy outside the court TV cameras.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Hondo … OK … fingernails fist … 22 second … better?

Hondo

MCPO: can’t do either while he’s in civilian custody in the US.

Not sure about the fingernails part – I do believe there should be limits. But some form of “strenuous interrogation”, conducted OCONUS, aimed at getting all the intel we could from this tool would be perfectly OK by me. I’d also shed no tears had he simply disappeared afterwards.

Unfortunately, neither is now an option.

PintoNag

What could be the reason behind killing Bin Laden, but capturing his son-in-law? Wouldn’t the other way around have made more sense?

Ex-PH2

Ah, yes, now you all see the REAL reasoning behind sequestration. Cut the defense budget, put the border patrol on furlough, make a stupid and alarming statement about using drones against US citizens within US borders, and subsequently bring a known terrorist TO this country for trial instead of sending him to Guantanmo for a prison stay.

What does this all add up to? Hmmm…. Quentin Tarantino could ahve a field day with a plot like this. I must keep taking notes.

Hondo

PintoNag: politics. Prior to the 2012 election, taking out bin Laden was better from a political standpoint than capturing him. Now that the election is past, capturing his son-in-law allows the administration to establish the IMO asinine precedent of trying foreign terrorists waging war against the US who are captured abroad in US civilian courts vice by military tribunal.

PintoNag

That makes sense, Hondo, but wouldn’t the politics blow up in their faces if there is another terrorist attack here — particularly another large one — as a result of this capture? What possible good could come from taking the enormous risk of capturing him and holding him, and then bringing him here with all the protections he will have under our legal system? Doesn’t that negate the only real value he has to us, as an information source?

Veritas Omnia Vincit

@29 the dunk tank is torture, but drone strikes on Americans on US soil is just policy due to extraordinary circumstance….

Twist

Looking around teh interwebs, the Libs are already claiming that Obama “got him”.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

This terrorist was located after an exhaustive manhunt that started after OBL compound was raided. OBL left a pretty good trail for INTEL and SPEC OPS community to go by.

he will be convicted and he will spend rest of life in a max fed prison.

Runor has it … he sang like a bird when caught.

Hondo

MCPO: IMO, that’s still exceptionally bad precedent.

I’d have been OK with him spending some time at GITMO, a trial by military tribunal, and execution/other sentence afterwards. However, trying this j-hole in Federal court establishes the precedent that a trial in the US Courts is how we treat terrorists captured overseas.

All of the terrorists at GITMO were captured overseas.
