Breathless LA Times reports rocket launchers in their midst
The LA Times is freaking out because during the city’s gun buyback program, the cops bought back an expended LAW and an expended AT-4. ” Holy hell why do people on our streets have military grade rocket launchers?” the reporter asks. Well, those rocket launchers aren’t even effective as clubs now. Anyone doing the least bit of research online would realize that those one-shot weapons. After they’ve been fired, those launchers become as dangerous as a cardboard box.
The official told us this is not that unusual, that “we’ve had them in the past.”
He says that police believe the “shoulder-fired” weapons are antiquated, decades-old, launchers from wars past often picked up by collectors or passed down to family members by veterans.
The official described them as LAW weapons, for light-anti-tank weapons.
They propel rocket grenades, but the official called them “non-working” because they did not have the “projectiles” with them. Thank God!?
I’ll admit that only a moron would keep an expended tube, but it’s not like someone is going to refurbish the things and make them into weapons again. If the cops paid for the things, they’re dumbasses. The only time I’ve seen a LAW tube refired is when we used to bury them on end up to the muzzle, drop an artillery simulator down the tube followed by a smoke grenade for some indirect short range smoke launchers.

Yet another example of how the media is ignorant, uneducated, and just plain stupid. It showcases that the media isn’t interested in knowing the subject matter they are covering, yet they are responsible for informing the public about the same subject. Are they doing it on purpose, because of their own personal agenda, or is it because they are intellectually lazy? I think it’s a little of both. The outcome is that the general public takes what they say as the truth and that’s dangerous.

people buy expended law tubes and hang then on nam era jeeps and trucks as props, because they are period authentic. they’re not selling cheap either.
What a bunch of uneducated, ignorant idiots over there commenting… this is why we have hundreds of gun laws that do nothing but hurt law abiding citizens.
Just asking out of curiosity: how many of those guns turned over in exchange for grocery money were licensed or registered?

I’d keep an AT-4 tube if I’d actually used it in combat. I kept some of the brass from the first time I was in combat. The important thing to remember is both the AT-4 and the LAW are NOT reloadable. Meaning even if you have a new round, you CAN’T reload the launcher.
I love the comments over there from people claiming to have “experience” with these weapons and then going on and on about how dangerous shoulder fired rockets are…Call Of Duty much?
There are numerous militaria collectors that want these. Replicas sell on ebay and other sites for about $100. Had a expended/inert LAW, RPG round, and a claymore on display in the wife’s antiques shop a few months ago until a collector talked me into selling them. A few months before that some scared liberal old lady reported to one of the alphabet agencies that we had these very dangerous items in the shop. Without identifying themselves, two agents showed up unannounced and went directly to the display and started examining and dismanteling them. Being pissed I asked them WTF they were doing. That’s when they pulled their ID out of their shirt pocked which were hanging from their neck. Damn, I got a good laugh at that. They were young and evidently were not familiar with them or their purposes. Schooled them a bit and they eventually left. No apology or whatever. They don’t seem to mess with us anymore, however several of them and other LE do occasionally drop by to view other militaria from multiple eras we have. Think if they had tried to take them I would’ve put up quite a fuss. Have used all of thet type ordinance on multiple occasions while in VN and training. BTW, looking to purchase other inert similar items.
When inert rocket launchers are outlawed, only outlaws will have inert rocket launchers.
I’ve been waiting for a gun buy back to happen near me. I figured out a great way to make money. $10 worth of plumbing parts, becomes a crappy zip gun, which could be bought back for lots more. Profit!
I hear they can be used for ieds. But yeah I like that zip gun idea….

Back home in Utah, folks that worked at Thiokol used to buy used Minuteman, Poseidon, Polaris (and other such ICBM) rocket nozzles from the test firings. These were inverted into a concrete “tub” and used as BBQ grills. Just fill them halfway up with gravel and sand, then put your charcoal and/or wood on top of that. A piece of expanded metal grill made the cooking surface.
I remember working at Thiokol’s boneyard in the early 70’s as a seasonal hire and loading these things into folk’s trailers or pickups.

@9: Yeah, I replied to some chucklehead that was wetting his diaper over them. He claimed that he had been in the Army and was blabbering on about how he couldn’t figure out how such a dangerous weapon was in civilian hands. I told him that if he was really in the Army, then he would already know that an empty LAW tube is no more dangerous than a paper towel tube.
I must object to your blanket statement about only morons keeping expended tubes. I do several living history gear displays wherein I have expended LAW tubes and such as part of those displays, particularly my USMC Vietnam display. And I don’t think I am a moron.
#15 Wonder what they’d do with Smith and Edwards up north. Or the two inert Artillery shells we’ve got here in the family as decoration since the step-father is retired 82nd Artillery and wanted them. Bet they’d blow a fuse with the hollowed out sea mine the Pope AFB EOD shop used as an ash tray.
I’ve got a picture of my cousin holding an RPG7 over her shoulder and an AK47 under her arm from the EOD shop’s display too. Sure, both are obviously fakes, but I doubt they’d see anything beyond a twelve year old with scary things.

I used to LOVE spending a day going around Smith & Edwards when I was a kid. they had hundreds, if not thousands of drop tanks outside, and all sorts of cool things like tank periscopes, rifle-grenade sights and adapters, a cutaway over-sized BAR and M2 machinegun training devices, etc.
My favorite was the old M-4 Sherman recovery vehicle that sat out front. That place was like Disneyland for young boys (and older boys too).
