Obama to make Tricare better

| November 20, 2012

Jason was concerned when we reported that the Obama Administration planned on cutting a few hundred thousand veterans out of the Tricare Prime program in April, so he wrote the White House with his concerns and here’s how they responded;

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I have heard from many military families concerned about TRICARE, and I appreciate your perspective.

Over the past 3 years, I have worked to address the growing cost of health care by implementing efficiencies in Government spending that will improve TRICARE and ensure military families have access to high-quality medical care. These efficiencies include the creation of virtual lifetime electronic health records that will follow service members from military to civilian life. Additionally, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, military hospitals received funding for much-needed facility improvements.

Under the Affordable Care Act, all features of TRICARE remain in place. The law does not affect health insurance coverage received through TRICARE in any way, and the Department of Defense maintains exclusive authority over providing the highest quality care to our service members, retirees, and their families. In fact, many of the key reforms put in place by the Affordable Care Act are already common practice in TRICARE—including coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, access to preventive care services with no cost sharing, and no annual or lifetime caps on coverage. The Affordable Care Act also makes clear that those who are covered by TRICARE will meet the law’s minimum coverage provision.

One benefit addressed by the Affordable Care Act, but not already in place under TRICARE, was allowing young adults up to age 26 to remain on their families’ health plans. As of January 2011, the Department of Defense now offers similar benefits to young adults with a parent enrolled in TRICARE through the TRICARE Young Adult program.

TRICARE will continue to provide affordable care to over nine million service members and their families. When Americans answer the call of duty and serve in our Armed Forces, a sacred trust is forged. From day one of their enlistment through retirement, the United States must always support those who serve and have served in uniform. These men and women risked their lives to protect our freedoms, and we must do all in our power to provide them with the benefits they have earned, including comprehensive health care. For more information or assistance with TRICARE, please visit www.TRICARE.mil.

Thank you, again, for writing.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

So, I guess that by getting rid of Tricare Prime that will make the system better somehow. Whoever wrote the letter didn’t even acknowledge that Tricare is being shut down in some western states in April. So, I guess we should stop worrying about it and start watching the squirrels instead.

I put “0bama to make Tricare better” in the same category as a person saying “Hi. I’m from the government and I am here to help you.” Nothing ever good comes from either one…

It won’t matter because all of the doctors I have talked to about this debacle all agree that it will make things worse in the health care industry, one corollary of which, it is driving doctors out. My kids pediatrician is retiring. Their allergist says he wishes he could retire. The consequence that will have the most impact is that doctors are going Galt. No one is going to have decent health care, for the sake of giving everyone health care. Took the best system in the world and broke it. Lovely.

I used to say, when I had horses and the vet made house calls, that I could get better care from a veterinarian than I could from an MD.

I still think that, now more than ever. If you move, make sure you’re no further than 15 minutes by taxi from the nearest hospital. If the government’s programs follow the same path that is being followed in the UK, hospitals will be shutting down, too, to “consolidate” things.

I foresee a black market of healthcare popping up after all this crap goes into effect for real. All I know is I have about 6 more months for my Paramedic, than 3 years for my PA. Then I will see patients for cash only (cuz F@*$ the Man).

Old 21B

That letter reads less like it was meant to reassure that Tricare will be fine and more like an endorsement of how awesome Obamacare will supposedly be.

The Black Market rules: whether its emergency surgery or medication.

Ex-PH2: you’ve read all 5400+ pages of the report – any truth the Prez’s statements?

Stop laughing, I’m just asking for verification.

Jonn, you continue to blame the Tricare Prime cuts on Obama. The article you linked a few weeks back about this when you quoted Obama saying that he is “not going to balance the budget on the backs of veterans” pointed out that these cuts were initiated and started when Bush was in office. That would seem to be contradictory. I’m no fan of Obama simply because he’s a pussy and has created a command climate that has caused good soldiers to be thrown under the bus (SFC Taylor comes to mind), but blame the right people. Show me a law or reform or anything with Obama’s signature on it has affected Tricare because everything I’ve seen people point out seems to have been started before Obama took office.

Not enough “Mo’ Fo’s” in it to be written by Obumble …

Does anyone have any articles they can post here that discusses this in more detail? I live in the DC area, and am curious how (or IF) TRICARE Prime will be affected here or if costs will go up? Thanks.

Zero Ponsdorf

C’mon Jonn. TRICARE should be folded into the VA Health System. Then the VA thing will begin to include those on welfare (etc). Everyone (except Congresscritters) will have free health care eventually so just bend over relish the egalitarianism of the process.

#4!FltMdic – Where are you thinking of finally settling to start your practice?
And “cash only” = how many oz of Ag (silver)?

OWB

Well, isn’t this special? We are all soooo reassured by the promises, promises, promises.

Common Sense

Blackfive has additional details on just how grateful the nation is to our troops:

Just disgusting.

@10 USMCE8Ret12 here is a link to the article that give some info on the cuts and change in Tricare system:

Thanks for the clarification Jonn

USMCE8Ret12

@15 – Thanks very much. Doing a great deal of research today.

Maybe what was addressed in Obama’s letter was that the Affordable Health Care Act will attempt by other means to replace what the Bush Admin cut.

This change in TRICARE was instituted by the Bush Admin’s DoD. The ninth paragraph of the article cited by The Earthpig states:

“The end of Prime outside of 40-mile ‘catchment’ areas of military treatment facilities has been anticipated since 2007, when Defense officials drafted the third generation of TRICARE support contracts.” (http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,251962,00.html)

Why is Obama always getting blamed for the crap that Bush got us into! It’s amazing how much some Vets admire the chicken-hawks. Some Vets forget how Bush & the GOP went to war then underfund the VA.

Thank you the biggest problem we have is no one reads anything anymore they just listen to talking heads please no matter who you go for it hurts all of us. But read and find out who did it .

Here is what Obama wants to do to TRICARE as of yesterday. Not cut services, but increase what we pay. For over 65 retirees that is in addition to the proposals for Medicare (Double Whammhy).
