Marines; saving the world one borough at a time

| November 5, 2012

The New York Post reports that the Marines have landed in Staten Island and Queens to assist in cleanup efforts there. And the residents seem appreciative;

“I was just speechless when I saw them,” said Priscilla Smalls, 53, who lives in the Ocean Bay Houses in the Rockaways’ Arverne section.

“I’ve never seen Marines anywhere before, let alone over here in the projects. It’s a great, cool thing. We need the big guns after what happened here. I’ve seen the National Guard, but the Marines are a whole different thing.”

They don’t seem to be worried if the Marines are armed or not, like the old lady who calls himself mayor of New York City.

Thanks to Preston for the link.

Well, we appreciated the National Guard. A lovely Air National Guardsman knocked on my mother’s door to check up on her. They were going door to door to make sure.

And the Marines are certainly welcome here, even with guns blazing. None of us is afraid of them. They are trained well enough to know when to use them.

Elements of the 26 MEU, commanded by my Brother Rat, COL Matt St. Clair, VMI ’89!

New York needs to make some serious changes in their leadership!! Nanny B has made that city the laughing stock of the free world.

I also saw a report of Navy personnel landing in Queens (literally in landing craft). They are dewatering buildings and evidently broke out shovels to remove piles of sand.

OWB

Do they have bayonets??

Interesting, isn’t it? Marines are allowed to have their weapons when helping cleanup in NY (and damn good job on them for doing it), but aren’t allowed to have weapons to protect themselves from green-on-blue attacks?

UpNorth

@#4, strange that the military has arrived and broken out shovels, have any of the people whining about the government not doing anything broken out their shovels?

Common Sense

It seems like all of them have misinformed ideas about the capabilities of the Guard. With many combat deployments under their belts, they are capable of FAR more than just handing out food and blankets.

They should be put to work using their vast skills with cleanup and recovery and leave the food and blankets to charities like the Salvation Army.

It’s also weird that it’s OK for the Marines to have weapons but not the Guard. And if Cuomo disagrees, why doesn’t he just overrule Bloomberg and send them in anyway?

Ya know, th dhimiwitcrats wanted another Katrina type storm for GWB so they’d have something else to ride him about again. Instead, they own this one and it appears to be no different than the tiff that went on between Nagan and Blanco.Until LTG Honoree’ arrived on scene…

Cue the PR machine. My home unit is a NY Heavy EN guard battalion with equipment located several hours drive away from the City, and they have been in Manhattan handing out meals and water, as the article says. I guess there isn’t any need for loaders, excavators, dozers and dump trucks in any of the other boroughs. Makes me kind of glad I’m still in Afghanistan, frankly…

Hondo

USMC and USMC Reserve are Federal forces, not state. I don’t think Bloomberg (or Cuomo, for that matter) has any say in whether or not they’re armed.

MCPO USN NYC (Ret.)

@ 11 Hondo spot on. The President sent the Marines. And all other branches as well. Everyone is chipping in.
