Ten Worst States for Retirement

| October 29, 2012

Anyone else see a pattern here?  And if so, what?

With one (or possibly two) outliers I believe I do see a pattern.  More than one, actually.

I have to disagree with Alaska. We may have a high cost of living, however we do not pay State or Sales tax.

AW1 Tim

I live in Maine and I understand why it ended up on the list.

Having said that, we are making improvements. In 2010, we managed to put enough conservatives into office that the GOP took over control of both houses of the legislature, AND the governorship. The leftists have been screaming bloody murder as many of their pet socialist programs have been axed, but hey….. we’re getting there. Hopefully we remain in control for a few more years to get the ship of state righted again.

It does get wicked cold here, and we DO get a couple week’s (at least) of high ( 90-100+) temps in the summah. If, like me, you are on a fixed income, it can be tough. BUT, there are some advantages to balance things out.

And yeah……. there certainly is a pattern to those states. 🙂

You know you’re in bad shape when your state is a worse place to retire than North Dakota.

It IS funny that all the states except AK are blue. That being said, I’d definitely include Alaska on my list of top 5 retirement states!

Devtun

Surprising California didn’t break top 10 – has unbeatable scenery & weather….lots of downsides however. Must be pretty serious, because even libbys beating feet to other states and spreading their progressive filth.

Also many millions of retirees choosing to set up camp in foreign shores…Nicaragua, Guatamala, Thailand, Phillipines, Singapore, S. Korea, Japan, Australia…

Zero Ponsdorf

I see a pattern! Geezers are skewing the demographics everywhere; some places more than others.

Ranger11C

Definite blue pattern, however as stated above I will disagree with AK, it is on my top 3 for where I am going to retire.

Twist

@6, I’m already looking at houses in Fairbanks and it looks like my brother-in-law can get me a job working at Ft. Greely if my job at the ADFG falls through.

OWB

Funny, in the odd sense, that military retirees seem to be skewing the numbers favorably in CA but not favorably in AK. Hmmm.

Old Tanker

My state is number 1!! Hey, Michigan is first in something! Actually, we turned Red in the last election, Governorship and both houses so we’ll see what happens. Unfortunately Detroit drags the whole state down in a big way….

BU3 (SCW) KYLE

MI #1!!!

I have to disagree with climate issues. I love the fall and winter.

Claymore

“Stop sending your damn communist yankees down South and fucking up our elections! I happen to LIKE getting Robert E. Lee’s Birthday off every year!” – I’m Claymore and I approve this message.

Ex-PH2

Geezer alert! In some counties in Illinois, seniors automatically get discounts on their property taxes and do not have to pay the local city sticker tax. Public transportation in some cities is discounted for seniors, as are a lot of other things like discounts at Supercuts, discounts on taxi rides, discounts at a lot of restaurants. I don’t mind the weather. Except for my time in the Navy, I’ve lived in Illinois since I was 5.
Love the spring and fall, the wildflowers, the migrating birds, all that stuff. If it’s too cold up here in the frozen north of Illinois, I can shag it down to Cairo, buy some land cheap and build a nice little cottage, and rent hunting leases to weekend hunters.

FltMedic

Hey I am reversing the trend. I left Fort Knox for MI 4 weeks ago. Lets see how the lefties like it for a change.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

I live in Massachusetts and to be honest if I wasn’t married to a lifelong resident I’d already be somewhere else….there is a lot of nice property and places to go and things to do here, but the article is correct when it discusses how expensive Mass is to live in.

Speaking about New England commies moving south, I’ve got a friend who is in Cary NC and he tells me some of the locals joke that Cary stands for “Collection Area (for) Relocated Yankees”….he keeps telling me how pretty it is and how comfortable year round….after losing power for 10 days and running on a generator….an average yearly temperature considerably warmer than here in massachusetts is starting to have some real appeal…

PATTERN ANALYSIS:

The ten worst states happen to be states where there is a high number of non-taxpaying, cane using, disability receiving, welfare enjoying, single parent raising, blue voting, liberal loving, and Bama phone using citizens.

END OF ANALYSIS

Twist

MCPO, Alaska is a red state.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Alaska is the list because of the Grizzley Bear threat only! I would retire there!

VTWoody

Pops just moved to PA after he retired, one plus was that PA doesnt tax military retirement pay. Looking online I see that quite a few states do. Wonder if that will be considered a “loophole” sometime soon

ex af

used to be retirement was a place with a military base nearby. commissary, BX/PX/NEX, medical. With BRAC and base closures, add in downsizing of medical care (yeah you want a clinic with a stroke or cardiac event..) forget that.

I don’t know if they told you ground pounders everytime you reuped that they would take care of you and your family for the rest of your life. So much for that promise.

DaveO

Alaska is mostly subsidized. When given the choice of standing on their own two feet with Joe Miller, or sucking both of Uncle Sugar’s teats with Murkowski or the Dem, Alaskans chose Murkowski and pure welfare suckage.

The weather is a bear, as are the bears wandering about town.

Twist

If by subsidized you mean that Alaska takes in more money then it pays in taxes then I would like to remind you that 60% of Alaska is owned by the Federal Government to include four large Military bases, multiple smaller ones, and a certain mountain named after Ohio’s favorite son that the lower 48’s politicians will not allow us to change back to it’s original name.

I also can’t stand the Murkowski’s.

Ex-PH2

Oh, taxes! Almost forgot — Illinois does not tax income retirment.

Ex-PH2

Sorry, that should be ‘retirement income’.

Yat Yas 1833

Don’t retire to Az! It’s too hot in the summer, doesn’t get cold in the winter and we get pounded by the “monsoon” every summer. Don’t forget we’re being over run by illegals too.

#21 Twist: I’m talking about the Alaskan Permanent Fund Dividend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Permanent_Fund)

As for me: Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona (Bisbee area), New Mexico, or for snow: Wyoming. Any place too rough for immigrants from California, Illinois, or New York is perfect.

Twist

The PFD is from the oil companies not the State. All the State has to do with it is verify eligibility and then dispersment. So no Uncle Sugar’s teats on that one.

UpNorth

I also disagree with our #1 ranking. We have the Great Lakes, 11K inland lakes, which is more than the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, and two seasons, Winter and Construction.
On the downside, we do have Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, Saginaw and Bay City

NHSparky

I looked at the entire list and NH was #16. I dare say that if interest/dividend income wasn’t taxed (5 percent versus NO income tax) I’d be far more inclined to retire here, weather notwithstanding.

Hell, I’m half-considering PITTSBURG, if you can believe that (not the one in PA–think Canadian border and -45 in the winter.)

Twist

UpNorth, we also have a saying in Alaska. We have 4 seasons. They are winter, June, July, and August. Plus we have 3 million lakes, which blows “Land of 10,000 Lakes” out of the water.

CUNextTuesday

Minnesota.

Land of 10,000 lakes, 100,000 swamps and 100,000,000 mosquitos!!!

CUNextTuesday

Forgot ZERO NFL titles…..
