Free Hunting Licenses to Disabled Vets

| October 17, 2012

I like it when my state government does something right. Governor Rick Snyder (R-MI) signed a few bills into law recently.

House Bill 5292 allows disabled veterans to get hunting and fishing licenses at no cost, according to the governor’s office.

There were two other bills related to Veterans as well…

• House Bills 5159 and 5162 allow circuit and district courts to create supervised treatment programs for veterans suffering from mental illness or drug or alcohol dependency.

Hey, if the V.A. is too backed up, the state will do it. One thing that I was glad to see in all 3 bills, there was not a single “Nay” vote. Every Republican and every Democrat voted for these bills.

Sorry…..I just checked – a NYS Sportsman’s License (big and small game and fishing) costs $5 annually.

It should be completely free, but is not.

Along these lines… my husband was at Chase bank and the teller asked him about his EOD hat, which led to him showing proof of military service so he could take advantage of veterans perks. I think they include free checks, no balance, a free safety deposit box and I’;m not sure what else, but all prettu good stuff. I asked at the other bank we do business if they offer anything like that and they had nothing but Chase seems very veteran friendly.

New Hampshire gives free hunting and fishing licenses to active duty; I am not sure about disabled vets. NH also allows active duty to renew driver’s licenses for free.

Qualifying veterans in NH get $100-500 off property taxes, depending on the town one lives in. No breaks for vehicle registration, however. Dunno if they give vehicle registration breaks for AD.

Hawaii had the best deal for that I experienced. 50 cents to renew your registration if you were AD.
