Shouldn’t we be rioting or burning embassies or something

| September 26, 2012

The above is an album cover or whatever they’re called these days by some Muslim dude called Brother Ali. But don’t worry, kneeling on a US flag while it’s on the ground isn’t meant to be disrespectful…even though it is;

While the album’s cover could stir up controversy — it depicts Ali kneeling in prayer on the American flag — Ali says he intends no disrespect.

“It was meant to be a literal depiction of the album title,” he says. “That the things that we believe about our country — freedom, justice, equality, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, all people being equal — that these things are on the ground, these things are suffering, and so I am kneeling and praying for it. The meaning behind kneeling in this reverent way and praying is only a problem if [people] have believed this lie that somehow being a Muslim and being an American are mutually exclusive.”

But, it’s perfectly alright to kill people who draw cartoons of Mohammed and kill people who have nothing to do with a poorly made video and kill people for burning a defaced Koran. But, defacing one of our symbols is just dandy, cuz he’s just making a point about something or other.

No, I’m not trying to start a riot (since I see a lot of traffic from DoD and DoJ here), I’m just saying…where are the Muslims who should be condemning this peckerwood for doing to our stuff what they won’t allow anyone to do to their stuff?

Thanks to CSE CSC for the link.

See, it is like racism. If it’s a Dumbocrat saying something racist, then it isn’t racist; only Republicans can be racist. It’s not insulting if the insult is toward Christians, Americans, or anything else; it’s only an insult if it is against something Muslim.

Personally, I say we allow Marines to carry ammunition in our overseas embassies. And, we allow them to protect the flag on said embassy grounds. If someone INVADES American soil, then they are taking their life into the hands of a well-trained marksman with a nice covered position within the embassy.

Let Muhammad tell them how much of a dumb-ass they were.

OWB

So, yeah, we can expect an apology from assorted leaders of Iran, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Pakistan, et al any minute, right?

Not holding my breath here.

Joe

We’re supposed to be the civilized ones, remember?

Nik

“We’re supposed to be the civilized ones, remember?”

Because being civilized and understanding and turning the other cheek has worked out so amazingly well in the past…

Hondo

Satire, Joe. If you’re referring to the title of Jonn’s article, I think you need to look up the definition of the term.

And if you’re referring to Flagwaver’s comment, remember that civilized nations do defend themselves when attacked. History teaches us that if they don’t, they get overrun by barbarians.

Ex-PH2

My remote ancestors were the barbarian Celts. Screw civilized!

Anonymous

In Europe wars have been started over less than attacking one nation’s embassy . Think World War I over any their others before. The muslims are playing the old”do as I say not as I do. When are people going to understand the muslims only respect force used and kicking their asses off the Planet is not weakness. Joe

Stuart Clark

Looks like a guy asking for an ass kicking, but who am I but someone sworn to protect and defend someone’s First Amendment rights?

2-17 AirCav

If a picture is worth a thousand words, the words in his explanation are heavily outnumbered. The US flag is not merely touching the ground, it is spread out on it like a picnic blanket and the SOB is kneeling on it. This is Brother Ali, an pigment-deprived Seattle, Minnesota rapper whose hero is Cornell West, the whack job. He likes to read Karl Marx and is very, very socially conscious, don’t you know. Now that I’ve wasted 10 mins reading up on Fred or whatever his real name is, he can go straight to hell.

Hondo

Perhaps we should give him an appropriate nickname, 2-17 AirCav – “Fakheem”.

As in, “Brother Ali? Oh, yeah – Fakheem!”

#7 Was me,the puter was doing strange things this Morning. Joe

PintoNag

NO, you don’t kneel on something you’re praying for; you kneel on something you’re trying to control. Anyone who’s ever seen a rodeo knows that.

USMCE8Ret12

A prayer rug? Unbelieveable. Simply unbelieveable. Words simply cannot convey what’s on my mind right now.

Joe

THe album cover ofends me too, but part of the first amandment is that I do not have the right not to be offended, it’s part of the deal.

Nik

@14

Please find for me the clause that says you can’t be offended by anything someone expresses under the 1st Amendment.

I don’t recall anything saying you don’t have the right to be offended. So help me out.

Hondo

True, Joe. Now, please show me where anyone discussing this issue advocates the government punishing this guy for doing what he did.

You do remember that the 1st Amendment is a prohibition on government’s actions, right? And that private citizens are free under that same 1st Amendment to say that find what he did objectionable, and that they think this tool is a shitheaded low-life loser?

Twist

@15

I don’t think that is what he meant at all. I believe joe was trying to say that just because someone says something that offends you doesn’t mean that person doesn’t have the right to say it.

Twist

By the way I was just trying to clarify what joe what I thought joe was trying to say not that anyone in this discussion is advocating the government punishing this douche.

Nik

@17, 18

Fair enough. It didn’t read that way to me, but I could easily have mistaken his words and their intent. I have, however, see similar attitudes expressed. So while that may not have been what he was saying, the point remains.

Joe

What Twist said in #17. As as offesive as it might seem, he does notdeserve an “ass kicking” as #8 said. That’s the flipside of the first amendment, and that’s what I meant when I said, “we’re supposed to be the civilized ones”.

OWB

What it specifies, among other things, is freedom of speech. Nothing there about freedom from offense.

And offense is exactly what this clown can and should expect should he ever be within range of my free speech.

Do we need to discuss the not-so-nuanced difference between speech and action? Apparent;y many still do not understand the concept.

Nik

@20

Then you have my unreserved apologies. I did not understand your words to mean that at all.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Why does free speech usually manifest itself in the “art” world by shitting on the one thing that actually represents those freedoms to so many others. Do these folks really think the only way to “engage” the sleeping masses is through offensive imagery?

Just because most people don’t engage in performance “art” doesn’t mean we can’t comprehend disillusionment with the status quo totalitarian regimes through your words, shocking imagery for no actual effect beyond being shocking actually lessens the impact of your “art”.

Rappers use their rapid fire words to engage their audience, because this jagoff has an extremely limited audience and a considerable lack of talent, he has to resort to a shock factor to create a buzz. I don’t find this an artistic expression at all, based on the interview and his music I believe it to be a cynical attempt by a zero talent hack to capitalize on controversy and make some money. Without this imagery, “Brother Ali” remains a complete f#cking unknown except to the dullards populating the NPR comments section…not much of a career relying on those 4sswipes.

Joe

Yeah, kneeling on a flag, a crucifix in a jar of urine, etc. I wish people (? artists?) had more couth, but overall I’m glad we can’t censor them or “give them an ass kicking”. I hope the album is a commercial failure, as I expect it will be.

Nik

@24

Even if the album isn’t a commercial failure, the artist responsible for it is a failure of a human being.

Hondo

Joe: I think you need to re-read comment 8 above. In reading comment 8, I saw an individual stating his/her opinion that this tool seemed to be “looking for an ass kicking” – but also in the same sentence stating that he was sworn to protect their right to be a jerk anyway. Not the same at all as advocating “uncivilized behavior”.

Yer reaching/jumping to conclusions again, bud.

Joe

Well, it’s kind of an ambiguous post. Wasn’t clear to me if his instinct to protect the first amendment superceded his urge to give an ass kicking, or the other way around. If he feels like kicking the guy’s ass and restrains himself because of his loyalty to the first, I commend him. He is a civilized man.

If you think THAT’s offensive, check out “The Onion’s” article about Nick Jr. Suspending Production On ‘The Almighty Muhammad’s Porkalicious Toon Jihad’ found at
http://www.theonion.com/articles/nick-jr-suspends-production-on-the-almighty-muhamm,29633/

Nik

Well yah, but…it’s the Onion. It’s a satire site. It’s like believing the report on the Duffle Blog today that the Army is implementing a walking transport unit.

From the US Flag Code:

* The flag should never be stepped on.

* The flag should never touch anything beneath it.

And for those who need clarification, the flag shall not be used as a friggin’ prayer rug!

TopGoz

I see that the union is to the observer’s right in the cover photo, positioning the flag the equivalent of upside down (the union should be to the flag’s right, the observer’s left).
Yeah, I believe he meant no disrespect. Friggin butt-wipe.

Ex-PH2

The first amendment says you have the right to say or write or portray whatever you want to. It does NOT say that if something that someone else does offends you, you are not allowed to say you’re offended. Local law enforcement will tell you that if you kick someone’s ass over an offensive photo of the flag, you may end up in night court forking over offensively large sums of cash to a (possibly sympathetic) judge. Or not…depending on how much local law enforcement is as offended as you are.

CarlS

Remembering the Golden Rule, should we not Do Unto Them What They’ve Done Unto Us? After all, using that Rule, they are only doing to us what they want us to do to them. As ‘Officers & Gentlemen’, it would only be right . . . .

2-17 AirCav

“The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.” B. Hussein Obama address at the UN

Well, boys and girls, it appears that the future is Brother Ali’s, not ours.

2-17 AirCav

RE 34. Few are reporting it. There is a report that the administration tried to pull the video of the speech from YouTube. But the President of the United States said EXACTLY what is quoted above in 34!

Ex-PH2

And I thought toothless referred only to people with dentures.

UpNorth

@35, yes he did. Saw the cork soaker with my own eyes, and heard him with my own ears. He proved that he is what he is, and apparently what Madonna said he is, too. She’s trying to walk back her statement that we have a Black Muslim in the White House, now.
Oh, and Hondo, in #26, reaching and jumping to conclusions is the only exercise that our Joey gets.

OWB

Yep. Also saw that. Looked back for it later and could not find it. Hmmm.

Mr Wolf, non-Esq

Fine and dandy. If he so wishes to express his 1st Amendment rights in this manner, so be it.

I now have a wish to express my SECOND Amendment right.

On him…

Ex-PH2

How do you all think Madonna, the bastion of sheer vulgarity, would under sharia law?

Ex-PH2

That should be “would DO under sharia law”.

Yat Yas 1833

I’ve always been under the impression madona likes a good beating every now and then. I saw the clip of her little rant and she clearly said, “we have a black muslim in the White House”.

Anonymous

Ex-PH2: I was thinking about that last night. When they showed the clip (censored, but I knew what she was saying) on Fox News last night and how happy she was that there was a Black “Muslim” in office…I was thinking “Does she know she’d be among the first in line for a good, old-fashioned stoning?”

Nik

Sorry. 43 was me.

Yat Yas 1833

Ya know why we’re not burning down embassies and rioting in the streets? We (Americans) are polar opposites from the goat rapers! ***The numbers I’m citing are in the rawest form and I have NO citations to recite to support my hypothesis.***

The goat rapers are less than 50% literate while we’re WELL over 40% more literate. Almost twice! The goat sodomists have a combined (males & females) 6.5 years of education, we have a combined (males & females) 11.5 years of education. Almost twice! Our median household income is SEVEN TIMES more than theirs! The goat abusers earn $600 annually vs. us $44,000 annually. SEVEN forkin’ times more than them!? Less than 15% of goat molesters own an automobile while a little more than 15% of us DON’T own at least one automobile! the goat perverts have one religion, if you don’t follow it they either throw you in jail or kill you. We recognize at least eight major denominations with hundreds of off shoots.

Nope, nothing in common. To he’ll with them.

TheOtherMatt

A wise man once told me, “If you’re looking to be offended, you will be.”

The album cover doesn’t bother me. It’s symbolic of something, and I don’t really care what it is that he’s trying to express. Probably not the best idea he’s had. *shrug*
